After several years of not really watching much anime, I ended up stumbling across Erased / Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi when I decided to get back into watching anime. Just finished it last night, wanted to give my thoughts about it.
I... I really, really liked it. I (more than) a little sad that
Kayo and Satoru didn't end up together, but I went into it knowing that would happen. (I saw a bunch of people spazzing out about "How dare she not wait for him, the psychopathic Serial Killer waited for him to wake up (to murder him) so how dare she not wait for him to wake up (to marry him) on twitter a few months back.
From what I understand, thanks to talking to a friend who read the manga and the side-stories,
she DID wait for him, spending her entire childhood visiting him daily, till his mother forced the issue by cutting off contact with her, or something? Either way, I get the feeling that had Satoru woken up a few years earlier (Hell, with how young her baby is, I'm willing to bet that had he woken up 2 years earlier she'd have gladly married him.
But honestly? i'm fine with it. Satoru didn't want to save her from the serial killer because he had a crush on her when he was a pre-teen, he wanted to save her
because she was an innocent little child who didn't deserve to be murdered by a pedophilic serial killer.
Anyhow, this anime is easily on my top 10 favorite anime now. Was the ending where he confronted the serial killer a little cheesy? ...Yeah. But whatever. I got what I wanted out of it -
His entire friend group staying close friends, no children being murdered, no innocent, kind hearted mentors being framed for being a murdering child predator, everybody became successful in their chosen careers (Kazu a Carpenter, Kenya a Lawyer who helped bring a serial killer to justice, Hitomi a Doctor, Satoru a famous Mangaka, and... Whatever the fuck Osamu, Aya, Kayo and Misato got up to in their lives) and even Misato, the girl who bullied Kayo, became part of the friend group when she (likely) learned that Satoru was kidnapped because he was trying to save her - She helped raise funds for his healthcare, visited Satoru in the hospital, and when the friends all meet to have dinner and beer at a restaurant / bar, her former victim, Kayo, was visibly happy to see her. And... He met Airi again. Maybe they'll become something more, maybe they'll just be friends. Either way, Satoru is happy - She was one of the only ones who believed in his innocence in the Original Timeline, and he was hoping that he'd bump into her again someday.
10/10 anime. Really loved it. Made me cry - First with sadness, then with joy. 10/10, will rewatch at another time.
Also Kenya is the fucking GOAT, and the Serial Killer villian might be the single most detestable villian in any media I've read or watched... Because he comes across as very plausible and real. I'd say he's on the level of the antagonists of the Black Swordsman Arc of Berserk - You know, the child murdering literal demons. And when you're on the same level of detestability as
literal baby-eating demons from Berserk during the Extra-Edgy Saga, well, you are one vile mother fucker.
Does anybody have some anime recomendations that'll give me the feels, in a way similar to Erased? (First tears of Sadness, then tears of Joy) - I'd really appreciate it.
