Jump has axed so much shit that any other magazine would have loved to have because it never reached their ridiculous standards of success so it's their own fault they are in this situation where a lot of new series are worse than things they have axed in the past.
Settling for mediocrity isn't good, but getting rid of good series because they aren't a cultural phenomenon or simply mishandling properties leads to a completely different issue.

I would go so far as to say Elbaf (none of this Viz translation “ph” horseshit) is what Oda wanted to write before he even wanted to write One Piece, since Vicky the Viking is what inspired him to tell adventure stories in the first place.

Oda’s breaks have been pretty consistently 1 out of every four issues or so, with larger breaks to figure out the time skip and the Throne War. I think we’re well past Oda adding elements that would impact the length of the series like the Shichibukai or Supernovas did. I also don’t think the actual war will take as long as Wano did, since a lot of the setup Wano had to do all at once is being carried by these current arcs. 2030 is generous; I used to believe 2027 to coincide with the 30yr anniversary, but that was before Egghead island took a year.

The rumor started because some Japanese celebrity jump hires as a presenter for official OP events mentioned that Oda only planned for the strawhats to go to Elbaf sometime in 2022-2023 (this would of been the start of egghead) and based on interviews from before egghead started, Oda was hinting that the next arc was gonna be the last (granted Oda has always been shit at guessing when One Piece will end).
Further speculation was mainly little things like Loki being drastically different between his initial silhouette and final design and looking at the cover stories like the Giants from waters 7 going back to Elbaf instead of going to little garden like they said in egg head, and both Dorry and Brogy are still fighting in another post time skip, which a few autistic fans pinned down to 2-3 months in universe from when they showed back up for Elbaph.

The current theory is that Elbaf was either gonna be the place Usaop goes after the end like sanji with all blue, or one of those flashback only places that is key to a major character, but then again the OP fanbase has a long history with coming up with shit based on the smallest evidence,

anyone old enough to remember the rumored pirate summit arc atop an actual mountain.

Honestly it really did feel like Elbaf was right after Wano, though I wouldn't doubt some people back in the day thought the Straw Hats would go straight to Alabasta from Little Garden instead of diverging to Drum Island. There's a lot of smaller arcs that it's really not surprising Elbaf was held off a little bit longer than planned. Egghead being as long as it is just wasn't expected.
 
Okay I don't watch much anime these days, but I love bebop and champloo, so I thought I'd give Lazarus a try, and jesus fucking christ. What the hell happened to Watanabe? 3 episodes in and theres been no meaningful plot progression. The resolution to these little side story goose hunts don't make any sense either. Why were the Russian Mafia and Cartels after that dude in the Bunker? What did he have to do with the scientist guy they're looking for anyway? Why did a bunch of random Turkroaches who were willing to sever that one guy's hand for his wrist watch all immediatly calm down and take him to the scientist guy's grandma's house when he said her name? What are the odds they got randomly chased by the one group of hoodlums in Istanbul who know her?!

I don't even want to get in to the "woke" parts of the show, because honestly they're not even close my main problem with the show, but nevertheless are really ham-fisted, on the nose, and clearly written by a Japanese guy that is trying to please western progressives but also has only the vaguest, most surface level idea of what would pass as for that. In short it's more patronizing than "woke", but more than anything else it's fucking boring. I want my time back.

Even the main plot doesn't make much sense at just a surface level read.

The year is 2052—an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity prevails across the globe. The reason for this: mankind has been freed from sickness and pain. Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner has developed a miracle cure-all drug with no apparent drawbacks called Hapuna. Hapuna soon becomes ubiquitous… and essential. However, soon after Hapuna is officially introduced, Dr. Skinner vanishes.

Three years later, the world has moved on. But Dr. Skinner has returned—this time, as a harbinger of doom. Skinner announces that Hapuna has a short half-life. Everyone who has taken it will die approximately three years later. Death is coming for this sinful world—and coming soon.

As a response to this threat, a special task force of five agents is gathered from across the world to save humanity from Skinner’s plan. This group is called "Lazarus." Can they find Skinner and develop a vaccine before time runs out?

It's clear that Watanabe thinks he's making this inciteful social commentary on topics ranging from the opiod crisis, to climate change, soley because those things are vaguely alluded to in some of the exposition . Im probably not going to watch the rest of the show, but I guarantee that's what it will all be about at the end of it.

Honestly I would be fine with this shaggy dog goose chase style hunt for the scientist big bad format if the 5 main characters had any kind of interesting backstory or character moments revealed by the situations they're put into along the way. Instead every episode feels like pointless filler that exists only to justify a few scenes of, in fairness really well animated and choreographed, action scenes that add absolutely nothing, and are completely weightless since I don't give a fuck about any of these characters, live or die.

Even Watanabe's boxing anime fell off because of how much the plot veered wildly off kilter. Ask someone who still remembers Megalo Box. You'll have an easier time with Hajime no Ippo still being memorable because at least the protagonist is better developed.

Joe eventually reaches the finals. Yuri becomes very interested in the fight to the point where he surgically removes his Gear, leaving him pretty scarred.
They fight and I think Joe wins.

Then there's a sequel called Nomad where Joe ends up as a depressed bum. The old man is dead, the children hate him and he's stuck bumming off fixed fights in Mexico. He befriends someone in mexico and they work their way up a tournament, after winning it that someone gets shot because it's mexico. He then returns to america to I guess spar with a couple of top tier guys including one of Yuri's(now crippled) proteges.
There's some corporate interstruggle drama somewhere and it all ends on a hopeful note.
I really don't remember much of it besides one sparring scene having cool animation and there being a couple of good music tracks

Watanabe wasn't involved with megalobox, some guy named Yo Moriyama directed it.
Iirc before Lazarus the last things he worked on was the Blade Runner anime and Carol & Tuesday

What happens if Oda dies and OP isn't done yet? Because that's what looks like, they are trying to create a Detective Conan-style anime where the story never moves forward so that it can be exploited endlessly.

At the end of the absolute shit that was Wano the secrets surrounding the world have started to come out and the various groups are all moving and doing things.
