To be honest, it was more the faggot Gigguk selling me on a lie. The series was still entertaining enough even when I noticed that no, they would never explain anything more complex than the barebones rules, because most of the fancy shit that is done in the series would be hyper elaborate drawings for the system. What's killing my interest in the series, aside from reaching the last chapter is how a lot of it is going into Coco wank were way too many people seem to be deferring to a child that isn't even part of their system. Hell, they are starting to rules lawyer their rules and I would expect that shit to have been happening for ages, not because a little girls said "well, if you don't touch skin with ink it don't count like magic on a person!"

There is also some important stuff in the setting itself doesn't make any sense to me anyway, it should be trivial for the brimmed hats to outnumber the legal wizards purely on the fact that any schmuck can do magic as long as they have special ink and a basic idea of how to draw a circle, yet they behave like this super mega secretive society that must operate in the shadows when they use magic that is multiple degrees more powerful than the legal wizards purely on lack of restraint. A single overboosted spell that mutated some poor sucker almost collapsed a big magical hub full of big shots, that should speak volumes on how different their leagues are.

Witch Hat suffers from the classic "Chosen One Problem" where the entire world turns about the singular character, even when it doesn't really make sense. It was one of the problems with Harry Potter, although perhaps it was more forgivable then because he was literally The Chosen One. I hope that your objections about the ease with which the Brimmed Hats could overcome the legal wizards are answered in the story, but I suspect they won't be. The author wanted to write a small secretive organization undermining a morally questionable society through subterfuge and long term planning using their own morally questionable methods, but it so happens that this doesn't make complete sense as presented. I would guess that the reason the Brimmed Hats are so secretive is because of whatever happened when the Pointed Caps pwned every other school of magical thought, but like I said, I feel like the author doesn't fully understand how to tie it all together in a way that is completely satisfying. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe this will turn into the twist if the century and everything will suddenly make sense, but as things stand, you're right about the problems with the narrative.

I've definitely read a lot worse, but I do have a much harder time keeping tabs on series that don't stick to a weekly schedule if they are just alright. If I do hear good things when it's done or gone through another 50 chapters I may give it another go. I'm more invested in Frieren but also letting the chapters for it accumulate.

BTW speaking of anime youtubers I recommend KaiserBeamz. His videos are very informative and he's covering anime in order. I particularly like the Slayers reviews.

It's a fun series. A descent take of "normie ends up in nerd space". I think the anime also has a solid enough ending. The manga does go beyond the anime's story but I think it takes a weird turn with some pseudoharem stuff that is very out of place in that sort of environment.

EDIT: My experience with the Genshiken anime is only the first season. Sounds like the second covers the parts I'm tepid about.

I love it too, but I do think the anime enhanced it very well. I'm very much looking forward to the next anime season when I usually ignore the anime once I'm up to date in a manga.

I do agree with the stoic face syndrome the series has though. The anime softens it up but the manga's LOVE of showing no expresion in moments of tension is offputting sometimes.

Idk about HP, he's the chosen one but even in the first book he stumbled into the enemy plans than being a main part of his plan. From what I remember from Witch Hat (read it like 5 years ago), it falls into the issue that they can't do any horrific reveal about the main faction after spending so much time humanising their main members.

First season was about a club of old school male nerds and the one normal girl and shows how the culture was at that moment. Second season added a lot of girls showing how the culture went mainstream and wasn't only a boys club with plenty of normies, including a tranny femboy that the main character gets attracted to.

... In retrospect it was far less positive than the author intended.

Not including the original OVA? It's such a gory fun time. One of my first anime!

I'll never understand why they took such an adult work and then made two separate spin off anime for teen girls. It was apparently going to be an OVA trilogy, which I would've loved to see.

Now I did adore Blood+ when I was the demographic for it, it has some pretty heavy and dark moments. Unfortunately it suffers from the common 2000s anime issue where they decide everyone needs to be miserable and isolated from each other in the second half. I was very confused when I realized it was the same universe as Blood: The Last Vampire though, they are just so different.

I never watched Blood C, did you enjoy it?

First season is a normal chick humors the nerds because she has the hots for the only one that bothers to shower and take care of himself (plus childhood friend bonus) and ends up getting a liking to them as "my boyfriend's friends".

Second season is a harem of sorts that goes full fantasy land with Madarame.

First season is great, second season is standard Japanese fantasy where cute whamen will go to your places and enjoy your nerd shit because "reasons" and they will totally find out you are a cool dude! Wish fulfillment basically.

And yes, thanks for reminding me about the fucking femboy...
 
Any good Anime or Manga with fascist aesthetics where the "bad guys" win, i've heard Legend Of The Galactic Heroes comes close to this

I thought Nidaime part was more like the girls cast being majority of club members, since guys were senpai and graduated. So entire club turns into more fujoshi hangout.
About the trap, Hato. I don't know....
Since there is a "spiritual sequel", Spotted Flower. Basically using entire Genshiken cast with some nodding to character design, appearance - personalities and past events. But manga doesn't use Genshiken names and uses a more what if scenario. Not-Maradame is married to not-Kasukabe. There is a part due to sexual frustration and cheating. Because not-Kasakube is pregnant for 8-9 months now and communication problem between them.
Not-Maradame decides to do it with not-Hato (now having breasts), not-Hato does seduce him btw. Except not-Maradame is a sou-uke, so he gets penetrated. Can't say much beside "well, he's deserved it".

In hindsight, not-Hato is what fucking troonbian dream be like. Having a nerdy job and a big titty girlfriend. Except, nerdy job is writing BL and big titty girlfriend is not-Yajima (not fat like in Nidaime). Then again, this manga is published in josei magazine, so take that of what you will.

I remember reading that the author is big on plot and that everything makes sense, going into the background of stuff to move the story along (and give it a proper conclusion hopefully I assume is part of that).

if you liked metabarons (good choice btw) you probably gonna like john difool, which spawned it. best read in release order.
there's also XIII that should be read at least once imo just for how long it's been running (first album came out in 1984, and since it's very technically detailed it's funny how the technology changes over the time).
valerian & laureline I only read bits years ago but it's apparently quite popular and a classic (ignore the movie, or only watch it afterwards), it's still on my bucket list
blake & mortimer is another classic, but imo an acquired taste in that I can see why someone wouldn't like it that much.

those are more of the "serious" ones, there are more like blueberry (art also done by moebius) and michel vaillant, but never read those.

if you want something more on the fun side, some spirou runs are great. authors changed over the years since the character is over 80 years old, franquin (who created the marsupilami) and tome & janry are imo the best. lanfeust if you're looking for classic fantasy with quite a bit of french humor. my personal favorite is yoko tsuno which started out more whimsical but changed over time, followed by clifton which looks like a kids cartoon but is actually quite the opposite.

there are more but I don't want to bloat the post too much, and those are the "big ones" and mostly older which means there should be an english translation (or whatever language) around. for some reason lot of eurocomics don't get english releases since not a lot of publishers pick them up, especially newer ones who are less established, but there are quite a few of them.

Tbh i mainly got it because I need funny plus tons of references. I know that they even have a show within a show parodying magical girl series
