That's Perfect Blue. If you liked that movie branching out into more Satoshi Kon anime might be a good call (Tokyo Godfathers is a great movie to watch during Christmas!). Paranoia Agent and Magnetic Rose are also great but that might not be all that appealing to your kid.

I've actually seen that one too (Tokyo Godfathers), didn't know it was same creator. Can't really remember how I felt on that one it was so long ago. I just remember it coming on some indie movie channel one holiday, and they also had a more modern interpretation of Dantes Inferno where everything was done with cardboard cutouts and was musical iirc.

That's quite an extensive list, but I'll note them and see what grabs my attention. I did see Bocchi Rock on crunchyroll, and being a guitar player, piqued my interest. The attention to detail in some animes animation (what a redundant phrase) makes me always appreciate any guitar playing I see, because they usually portray it seriously.

And Cowboy Bebop is one I've seen bits and pieces of back in the day, so it's already on my radar as something I know I'll check out eventually.

On a different note, I actually was intrigued, so I went ahead and read the manga for 2.5 Dimensional Seduction. I don't want to spoil anything, but it has a very similar message regarding lesser loved properties as Deadpool & Wolverine.

Just doing a quick read about it, I like that the characters appear to be heavily influenced by western rock music. Being born in the 80s, the vidya composers had a big impact on my musical taste, with a lot of those guys/gals being influenced by the kind of stuff I would later get into.

I'm consistently impressed at the Japanese takes on contemporary western music, they adapt really well to any style, from rock to funk (they definitely love a groovy bassline).

Never heard a Jap outlaw country artist tho, that would be interesting.

I have fond memories of Kaleido Star, watching it as a teen. Of course I had the mindset of it being a "girly anime" but it was between two other shows and I slowly came to like it for its merits.

Kind of liked Fire Force back in the day and knew the ending set it up as a "prequel" to Soul Eater. Always thought that was autistic but finally broke down and read up on how that it played out.

What on earth besides narcissism and the obvious sonic disorder makes people think a shared universe is ever a good thing.
I'll spare the autism of explaining/linking to it and just say it's the most retarded shit ever conceived.
I've never read an ending that made me just straight up not want to read/watch the rest of a series before but holy shit. And people apparently actually ate this shit up and thought it was great.
I know I'm years late to this but holy shit some writers can really fuck up a good story with their own hubris.

Definitely watch Beck. It's one of the all time best. Close to my personal top 5 honestly. And watch the English dub, it actually is a lot better than the sub. Some of the animation really is dated even by my low standards. But they don't make stuff like Beck anymore.
It's like Welcome to the NHK for me in that it's a perfect example of just how real and down to earth anime used to be. No crazy fanservice or comedy relief or ADD editing. Just a really beautiful coming of age story.

That's nice, I remember some of the afterword's talking about how his favorite hero was Spiderman, which was always pretty obvious with how Koichi was. I see the manga also has the same artist as Vigilantes.

Anime suggestions?

The first anime I ever really got into, was at least 15 yrs ago; Inuyasha on Adult Swim, mainly cuz it aired when I was getting ready for work in the mornings.

Enjoyed it, but I always avoided really pursuing anything else. When I was growing up, there wasn't easy access to much anime, and I only ever remember DBZ being something that had any mainstream popularity. I mean, niggas have always been wearing Goku shirts.

But now that I've got a child that's right in the sweet spot of popularity and access to this stuff, she's turned me on to some shows.

I've watched some of the classics with her, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Berserk, and that idol one I can never remember the name of (with the girl rubbing blood on her face as the main promotional image of it).

And some of the newer stuff she's been into that I found enjoyable was . . .

I prefer older stuff myself. Unfortunately, I don't detect a pattern with what you listed other than runtime, so I'll list stuff that I like.

Macross Plus- 4 part miniseries, but find the Movie edition for what is effectively the Director's cut. Banger soundtrack, has my favorite dogfight scene in movie history, and the first movie to have a Vtuber in it. And of course, she's ashamed to be a Vtuber.

Macross: Do You Remember Love-Serves as a pretty good synopsis of the Macross TV show in a movie format. Actually feels like an old Hollywood movie from the 60s what with men wanting to love women and women wanting to be feminine. Somehow, that's edgy in Clown World.

Requiem from the Darkness-13 episode horror series about a writer looking for inspiration while Spirits pass judgement on various Horror cows. The art style is very strange. It looks like a blending of Ukio-e, Anime, and Cubism (extras tend to have this look). Worth watching just to see how these styles interact with each other.

Monster- Bit on the long side with 74 episodes, but it's about a doctor turned fugitive hunting down the serial killer he saved during surgery. Also, commies love to scramble children's minds, so pretty based to criticize them for it. Would be neat to find the German dub as that would actually be the most immersive, but Netflix only has the original Japanese.

Full Metal Alchemist- It doesn't really matter all that much if you watch the 03 version or Brotherhood. Brotherhood is best lore-wise and has lots of fights, but it insists on having too many manga asides while 03 is more like a typical show. Both shows are pretty long though at around 50 episodes, but both are praised for solid storytelling.

Any Kon Satoshi movie-He's like a grimmer, more cynical version of Studio Ghibi movies. His movies are typically about the blurring of reality and fantasy, sometimes--but not always--stemming from psychotic break like in Perfect Blue. His editing choices take full advantage of anime as a medium (Millennium Actress probably has my favorite kind of genre-shifting scene transitions). Mostly movies and Paranoia Agent, which is 13 episodes.

Big O-Bruce Wayne pilots a giant robot and the city suffers from amnesia. The ending is a bit better than Evangelion's IMO. 26 episodes, which is the average run of an Anime show.

Seirei no Moribito-Slow moving story about a female bodyguard hired to defend a prince from assassins and the prophecy that is supposed to end in his death and potentially drought for the entire nation. Most of the show is about them building a familial relationship. 26 episodes.

But hey, at least it kept a consistent theme throughout the entire series (being a shinobi is actually fucking awful because people are kind of awful, but they can be better if they actually try) instead of whatever the hell MHA (OH MY SEVEN QUIRKS) and JJK (I don't even fucking know with this man) became. And thank fuck it didn't go the way of Bleach.

BECAUSE OF THAT SHIT.
Naruto was never really about decent powerscaling or even Sasuke or some gay war. It's just a story about a dude going from a virgin to chad because he wanted to. Yeah, there's the obvious pitfalls of birthrights and power privileges every shonen series does.
Dude decides he's going to become president, does so by working hard, brings his best friend back from being an incel in the process, and then gets to fuck the dandere every day for the rest of his life because he earned it across 700 chapters.
He did the thing he said he would do in the first fucking chapter.
There's a simplicity and optimism there that mangakas have just forgotten over the course of 10 years. I don't know if they're trying to go down some deconstructionist western route or if mangakas are really going through immense burnout (which for whatever was just something mangakas powered through a decade or two ago), but it's really the worst shit you can pull, especially for a series that was supposed to literally be a tribute to silver age american comics.
Say what you will about Naruto, but it at least knew it was an underdog story and delivered on that.

Man, I really hope One Piece doesn't fuck itself.
