That bit was hilarious. He's just frozen in shock while she goes and cleans up his dropped tea and gracefully leaves. Honestly just from this scene where he's clearly jealous you can guess things that are only now revealed in the manga.
Imagine if Hawaii or the Aleutian islands came along, they'd find how "demonic" the US would be. Heck if the whole North American continent came along the empire would have to second guess. Wonder if they would make a spinoff from the POV of the US bases that came along.
There's also quite a bit hard sci-fi anime with stuff like Patlabor, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Space Brothers, Planetes, The Orbital Children, Twin Spica, Rocket Girls, and so forth. 2001 Nights is a great hard sci-fi manga.
The story also brings up the fact that the foreign embassies and consulates also got isekai'd and closed so that their facilities could be used for the new world countries and their diplomatic personnel. One thing that hasn't been talked about is the large number of foreign visitors, tourists, and expats that no doubt would have gotten isekai'd with Japan. Imagine being stuck in a foreign country after it got isekai'd to another world.
There's actually a story directly inspired by Summoning Japan about summoning America instead.
I'd like to see a spinoff of those, imagine how Western weebs react, or even obnoxious influencers now at the mercy of this new world. As for this story inspired from Japan Summons, does that include Canada or Mexico?
Spy-themed Action/ Comedy in not-Cold War Berlin if I would define it broadly. There are three main characters who each really have their own genre and are hiding a facet of themselves from the family. The basic premise is a Spy forms a fake family by adopting a child and convincing a woman to pretend to be his wife for their mutual benefit.
You know, maybe Mecha anime wouldn't be dead if it wasn't the rule to end it in extremely depressing way. The most you can hope for is for the protagonist to die rather than his girlfriend.
I think the closest anime I can compare it is Lupin with more slice of life thrown in. The forgers get into crazy situations and come up mostly on top with the occasional plot episode. Sometimes it's dramatic, most times it's comedic and you occasionally have an episode where one character gets the spotlight.
Watched that recently, I don't even know what to call it other than marriage mecha (you'll get it). I was also "Intrigued" by the sheer amount of fanservice in it, plus the callbacks to other Gainax shows. The opening basically outs it as a tongue-and-cheek throwback to corny overly-dramatic mecha of Japan's past, and the art style immediately makes me think of Code Geass for some reason. The plot was in need of much better pacing and probably more seasons though.
Godannar was done by AIC, the studio behind Tenchi Muyo and all those superbly-animated 80s OVAs like Bubblegum Crisis and Gall Force. However, if you're interested in other Gainax-related mecha, take a look at these:
On top of that, the show does a pretty poor job of explaining the lore and answering the questions that you'd need to look through the wiki just to understand what's going on at first. The manga is quite a bit better with this, as it has explanation files plus it's generally more coherent and better-made than the anime.
I'm guessing the reason they were approached is for their novel approach to animation. There's a certain kind of charm that the manga had that, as as as strange as it may sound, works better with the still image format. I personally think it would be difficult to convey via animation. Having a studio that's willing to take an unorthodox approach seems like a good call to me for that reason. FWIW the teaser feels pretty on the money tonally.
As far as I've read, only American territory. So no Mexico or Canada. Weirdly, it seems that American satellites and foreign bases also got Isekai'd; the bases were just magically stuck on top new islands specifically created to fit them.
You know how the Christian imagery in NGE is just "we thought it sounded cool" so it's in there? Well that's pretty much the entire setting. The mechanical/mecha/angel designs do so much heavy lifting for the show you don't really question the setting even though most of it makes no real sense or is wildly unsatisfying. Like at the end of the day shit like AT fields are just soul magic created by individuality but that isn't science even if the show treats it like it is by measuring it with science devices and using science numbers.
