Recent chapter on Gate has them concluding the battle between their choppers and wyverns. Now they have to return to Italica. Japan Summons has an update and the empire has seen pics of Japan

I thought he was just a crazy science guy. There are ways of going up without decompression like the arc in the second layer or just feeding kids into the general direction until someone makes it

As for the items recovered I guess they should improve things technologically since the original state of the island was way worse. But the manga is more centred on the hole then the artifacts in it.

People have returned from layers 1-5 various levels of intact but no one has ever been recorded returning from 6+ which is Bonrewd's goal. Mitty + Nanachi and Prushca are basically the results of Bondrewd trying to figure out how to mitigate the worst effects of the Curse of the Abyss.

You guessed right. It's ruined the story for me. I don't want to watch/read about more perfect people with cosmetic flaws when I was lured in by a premise opposite to that. You just can't expect Japanese webnovels to be good, ever.
 
Been rereading this old series again since it kinda sorta has a reliable scanlation now and actually enjoying it more then I remembered

Does feel a bit strange that the near future setting of the series its about a year or two away from current year. I'm also a bit surprised Space Brothers was popular enough to get 100 episodes back when it aired (by A-1 pictures no fucking less) when iirc anime was already neck deep in the seasonal 12 episode max trend with maybe a season 2 if the BDs and other otaku merch sold well.

The mangaka was legit super optimistic about our space program, not realizing enough funding would get cut that would practically ensure this future was never going to happen in our lifetime.

I really need to return to the anime, those DVDs have been sitting there waiting for me for too long.

That was heavily implied and hinted at much earlier in the manga then the reveal. It's pretty clear that the head eunuch is actually a blood relative of the Emperor, like a son brother or nephew

It makes sense when you want some progression, though having a full series over court shenanigans would have been pretty cool.

99 episode anime series, two films (one live action, one animated), and a planetarium show. The burn on this one is so slow that at the end of the TV series, the protagonist still has not been to space. This series started so long ago it uses the Constellation launch architecture for its lunar missions, so it predates SpaceX. If we pretend Constellation hadn't been cancelled, the timeframe does work out.
My understanding is it is drawing to a close, but the last volume hasn't been released in English on Kindle yet.

I've been meaning to get into the series. Is it better to watch the anime over the manga?

Anime is good but it is somewhat unsatisfying that it ends before the MC gets to space, although I think the journey it shows to how much work and training it is to simply get ready to go up shows how big of a thing it is and is rewarding in itself.
I only started rereading it because it got a simulpup and there are a few pirate sites are risking ripping it despite kodansha being more anal ever since kmanga launched (seriously there are cases of accounts getting deleted because they where talking too many screenshots on the site).
Tldr go with the anime if you just want a story of someone becoming an astronaut, manga if you really want them to go to space.

Then there's Nanachi. Nanachi (and later Faputa) lend to the idea that the author might have a thing for furries.

There's also this weird fact that Nanachi is genderless. That might be an insightful way of showing how the abyss's mutations are so twisted, they also completely redefine your human biology to the extent that your gender becomes completely undiscernible. This may have been an interesting allegory for something else. However, the fact that Nanachi is genderless is...just there. The author just makes Nanachi genderless, seemingly, for no other reason other than to have people question it.

I prefer the "Bondrewd #1 Dad" memes because it gets at a kind of funny part of his personality where he is very charismatic and comes across as kind to these children even as he feeds them into a wood chipper.

The entire point of Bondrewd is that he like Riko only wanted to understand the Abyss. Him figuring out the loophole of the Zoaholic meant that his will to delve is the only thing remaining of him. All his Black Hand collectively have that desire with his White Whistle and helmet anchoring the bulk of his personality to one body.

He’s literally inhuman. He says so himself, but he’s capable of love and care despite it. The entire point of the cartridge kids and Nanachi is that you need mutual love for it to work. Bondrewd is monsterous enough to devise the cartridges that allow children to remain conscious, but human enough to rationalize it and show enough love for the blessing/curse workaround to work.

That show is delightfully cheesy, and does a good job of parodying tropes. Misunderstandings always get resolved within an episode or two (if not immediately) and the MC always knows what to say. Also the Chibi chemist becoming a big badonka-donk woman was hilarious, but her drugs invite too much fanfic and ecchi options.
