Didn't expect this to come across my news feed. So how bad is it?

The story involves questionable content including graphic violence against children, such as nudity and sexual abuse. The creator of the series, Akihito Tsukushi, is also considered highly problematic and allegedly a “lolicon” (an adult who is sexually attracted to prepubescent girls).

not watched the show myself but from what i have seen, it just seems like edgy torture porn of underage looking characters with WAY too many peeing scenes.

Its a fine series, with an honestly interesting setting. But it is extremely graphically violent (and the violence is all the more visceral because it being visited upon children usually). As for the Nudity and sexual abuse, yeah, it exists, but the sexual abuse is more of the implied sort (most of the time), but the nudity is there, mostly to emphasize the innocence of the characters. As for whether or not the author himself is a lolicon, that's more rumor and scuttlebutt than anything. Probably something people latched onto because of the content. But it's one of the most popular manga in Japan right now, and its really taken off overseas, so its not like its unusual that K-pop idols are fans. All of this is more pearl clutching from the usual suspects.

Pretty hard to beat accusation when.... having young girl body mannequin as "drawing reference", webpage is in Portuguese. Being an artist and ex-designer all for his reason. House showing video is private on his channel, only images.

The video (it's nothing really) for picture below. Different shirt, same idea anyway.

He's pretty much definition of otaku weirdness. No audio.

Made in Abyss is really popular with women, so it's Koreaboos having a culture shock moment in them realizing Asian women with access to the Internet are into some really dark shit.

Though that does remind me I should get back into MiA...

Honestly, there has been some kinda less “Haha I’m in danger shit” and more “I understand how this outlines the horrors of the hellpit, but I didn’t need to see bathing amputee children”.

The sexual abuse is only the Robot boy getting experimented as a gag because people assume he’s less human than he is or the child of tribals who was cast aside after they found out she was infertile. Although the Value Village arc has Riko almost get molested, but that played fairly straight as something traumatic for her.

It’s one of this stories where you like it for displaying a kid getting in over her head and watching her get her arm broken graphically in order to amputate a poisoned limb and the author shows her screaming and pissing her pants or you hate it because of that.
The sense of danger of the series is part of the appeal. Riko is in over her head trying to get to the bottom of the Abyss and it’s not forgiving if you fuck up.

That reminds me of Clementine in TWD:S2, that was a bit tough to watch but I respect it when fiction doesn't generate plot armor for kids.

The premise is very simple, a little girl wants to find her mother at a bottom of a hole. The issue is that the hole is full of hostile wild life, ancient advanced technology, hostile people taking the relics, and the hole has it’s own version of the bends which can either make you nauseous or turn you into a gory pile mutated person.

Riko is an intelligent, but retarded child who would be dead if not for Reg. It does transgress certain boundaries most other stories don’t show. The author is very… honestly look at him I really don’t need to say more, but he really does write a good journey into the unknown.

Technically, Riko is slightly more than a child so her more rash actions are justified. The abyss is just fantastic world building and the more perverse parts of the plot at least fits the world.
Maomao is what happens when you want a strong female character that's actually written well. She's a bitch. A smart smarmy bitch that knows her shit, while at the same time, having to rely on others to work her way through the palace politics, like when the blue concubine got poisoned, and her ladies in wating wouldn't let her near until the head eunuch guy told em to fuck off. Also her facial expressions are gold
I started watching it based on the recommendation and I really like it, it balanced the serious and silly shit. I like that the heroine is not immediately seen as a threat by the other ladies in waiting, and they treat her well. Also banger OP.

I'm glad you liked it man. It's surprising how little attention it's getting despite actually having fun characters like Maomao that's literally a KF'er in a anime. I'm saying it, she's got the attitude to post on here

The opening song is definitely banger. She looks plain at first, until she puts on the sparling black dress and does her makeup differently and she looks so different. I'm way ahead in the manga and got to the point where we discover the top eunich has a frog and a backstory, but that's a ways away.
She's definitly a fun character. Largely calm until something excites or annoys her. The story arcs that will be coming next will be good also. I don't know if we'll get into her parental backstory this season tho.

Made in Abyss is Stalker/Roadside Picnic the anime. Everything is completely fucked everywhere all the time. It's probably the author's barely disguised fetish, but unlike most instances of that sort of thing what surrounds it is well written. The author is probably a degen, but at least he does his weird loli peeing shit in service of the plot (most of the time, I'm not sure what it up with the punishment regimen at her orphanage/adventurer's school) which makes it more tolerable.

In "WTF am I reading" levels it's more of a Lolita than a Blood Meridian or Naked Lunch.

You realize it was a light novel right? There’s a lot more spoilers like the bug autist being the ladyboy looking rival apothecaries sister.

From what I know the manga and anime are not 100% straight adaptations because the author kind of disliked some shit and changed it.

I do not have time to read all the light novels of the mangas and animes I've enjoyed. I lost a lot of time just catching up with the light novel for 7-th time loop translated in my browser
