I'll be daring and throw in a ringer with "Aho Girl". To translate, it pretty much means "Retarded Girl". The show features a no-punches-pulled fucking DUMMY of a female mc, and it can be very funny at times if you're into the joke, cause inevitably you're going to get a lot of it. It isn't about redemption, female mc was born with no chance of being smart, it is lost to her forever...

She's a cute little mong, but the show has weightier (not to mention smarter) chicks in it as well.

Aho Girl was a gem, should check if it ever had a conclusion. My two recommendations:

Tis Time for Torture Princess is getting an anime. I've been reading the manga and while the gimmick is a little repetitive, the lighthearted nature of it makes really enjoyable to check out every week. I wonder if it is going to change the beginning though because it is weirdly mildly lewd early on, but thankfully drops that gimmick pretty quickly for a more wholesome vibe.

I always have a problem recommending "funny" anime. I'd say Cromartie and Panty and Stocking are fine, most of the rest of these are "funny" in the Japanese sense which is pretty fucking dry from a Western background. I do have an affection for Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei but that requires a pretty firm grasp of non-weeb Nip culture to understand.

Armitage III is very much like Ghost in the Shell. I didn't enjoy it as much, though. There's also Serial Experiments Lain and Megazone 23.

Anyway, for my spooky anime recommendations for today:

A series of shorts about a little vampire boy from Katsushiro Otomo. They're very charming, and the CGI honestly isn't that bad for this.

Zeorymer is a beautifully-animated 80s mecha OVA with a ridiculously detailed and powerful mech. I highly recommend it if for no reason other than the excellent animation, though the story isn't bad either.

Ideon is Tomino's masterpiece in my opinion, and it's my favourite mecha anime. Though it has spooky elements, especially near the end, it's an excellent mecha anime to watch any time. It has cool spaceships, nice space battle scenes, a surprising amount of references to Star Wars, and a fascinating story. It's the best soft-sci-fi space mecha anime I've come across so far.

Ideon is Tomino's masterpiece in my opinion, and it's my favourite mecha anime. Though it has spooky elements, especially near the end, it's an excellent mecha anime to watch any time. It has cool spaceships, nice space battle scenes, a surprising amount of references to Star Wars, and a fascinating story. It's the best soft-sci-fi space mecha anime I've come across so far.

It also has a fantastic OST mainly due to Koichi Sugiyama doing the whole thing. Probably one of my favorite Tomino anime OSTs. I do think some parts in the middle dragged but Be Invoked is far and away a fantastic payoff.

I have the same feeling towards Ideon when it comes to Eva fans that Getter Robo fans have when it comes to TTGL, where I think both would end up really enjoying the predecessor if they give it time, but refuse to due to the original inspired material being "old" (come on New Getter Robo came out in 2004 it isn't THAT old in comparison to TTGL).

The voice acting is also ace, genuinely surprised it hasn't got a season 2 yet but most good things don't.

Afaik rightstuf used to have a free pdf link to the book about the cultural shit in Sayonara. They should have just gone Criterion method and included it free in every copy or as notes on the bluray itself.
