Another thing about romance in anime that series like Ranma and Inuyasha are shonen by still have pretty strong emphasis on the romance.

Trying to watch Bubble 'cause I'm bored. It wants to be pretty, but it's super jarring every time the art direction changes, the parkour scenes are really just reused Attack on Titan footage, and of course the lead girl is Quirky number gazillion. And the lead himself is pretty much an autist whose mother practically abandoned in a special needs classroom and that's why it's okay he's an orphan from surviving some bubble-like explosion at Tokyo Tower.

Gen Urobuchi was at the helm of this story, and it shows. Fucking hack.
 
He actually was only one of the writers on it. The majority was written by two new writers, Naoko Satou and Renjk Ooki. The former having never written an anime before it.

Hopefully, Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising, which is only writtern by Urobuchi, will be far better.

One of the most disgusting main characters I've ever seen with how pathetic and clingy he is, yet he never seems to learn or progress, watching the anime was enough to make me nope out on this shit forever and from what I've read, it's just gotten worse.

Agreed, I'm a sucker for romance and cute stories. Harems for the most part are ass but they can be fun in a series focused on something else where the harem just adds some spice or where it kind of reaches comedic values, but a story that is a romance and focused on a Harem will be dragging you out with the "will they won't they" for the whole length of the series even if it's obvious from chapter 1 which is the "intended girl" and very few harems deviate from that, making the journey a waste of time.

I have seen some small bits of "wtf?!" like in Kare Kano (manga), which is very sweet for the most part and then goes too edgy for it's own good near the end and kind of leaves you wondering what the hell the author was thinking. Ore Monogatari on the other hand is a treasure, second the recommendation of it, be it anime or manga.

True, though the grand majority of shounen with some romance tend to follow the "string the will they won't they" till the end very hard. As long as it doesn't annoy you that Ranma and Akane are still bitching at each other for 400 chapters even though it's fucking obvious they are an item.

More focused love stories I've read recently are Horimiya, starts very strong but kind of meanders in the middle, but I still file it as a sweet experience. Blooming Love and You and I are Polar Opposites are series currently still ongoing in the mangaplus site, both also very sweet. All 3 have in common that the couples set relatively early, you aren't waiting 200 chapters for anything deeper than unexpected hand contact.

More long running is Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-San (the tanlines girl that you've probably seen everywhere for some time) where it's a lot more slow paced but I'm surprised at how good it's going. You also have something like Love is War that starts out very strong but loses steam later (same dude as Oshi No Ko).

And then as much more out there recommendations, there is Your Lie in April, this I only watched the anime and it's very dramatic, tears were shed on this one, it's a 12 episode watch and highly recommend it. Then ... I can't for the fucking life of me find it's title, it's a surprisingly chill story of a chick that is an office worker moves into an appartment complex where some guy that works from home lives and they start hanging out. The dude's place is full of weird random shit his brother ships to him, they call it their... I always think of shambala, but that's not the word, basically place where they can just relax and be, was a sweet little story and pretty chill for the most part with characters that are older than you usually see. The other out there recommendation is Kindergarten Wars, also in the mangaplus site, this one is just mocking shoujo tropes like mad and I'm having a ton of fun with it.

Going to more standard staff, read some comments here about Dandadan and I'm fucking hooked, still in the mid 50s chapters but loving the hell out of it and praying it gets an anime from a studio that gives a shit.

Also, for any Zatch/Gash Bell fans, I recently learned that more than a year ago a sequel series came out and it's been a banger as well, only 17 chapters and with a monthly schedule, but I've been enjoying the hell out of it. And Karakuri Circus is finally fully scanlated in English.

Zatch Bell is so much better than it had any right to be, especially with the first impression one got twenty years ago. The sequel has largely been a return to form almost immediately.

Where is Karakuri Circus finished? Because I can only find it up to chapter 412.

That being said, both Makoto Raiku and Kazuhiro Fujita have a similar output of quality, which I really haven’t found elsewhere.
 
Midori Days is a strange idea for a romcom, but it's one of the cutest, funniest shounen romcoms of the 2000s. Sad the anime only has 13 episodes, there's so much left out from the manga.

despite its lewdness i like its situation humor and its character dynamics reminded me of pokemon
the only episode i skipped was one with a porn premise because i don't want to sit through twenty minutes of clothed sex

Sorry dude, my bad, I saw it completed in Mangadex and got eager. Forgot that it meant the series itself is completed, not any scanlation effort. I remember last time I got up to date I went fuck it and just plowed through the raws, so I have a solid grasp of what the hell happens at the end, but would still read it proper... Anyway, sorry for giving false hopes.

A lot of that era had “what if my girlfriend was X?”
What if my girlfriend was a fox spirit?
What if my girlfriend had multiple personalities?
What if my girlfriend was a robot?
What if my girlfriend was a vampire?
What if my girlfriend was a reverse vampire?
What if my girlfriend was a can of soda?

It’s still kind of like that, but a) the traits of said girlfriend are a lot more mundane and b) the titles are just fucking descriptions of the plot.

I think Maison Ikkoku is one of the better romance stories both in manga and anime that avoids the stringing along and meandering you mentioned other shonen series. While there are some overly sarcastic characters and moments, the whole story and its characters feel very relatable and down to earth. I was captivated to watch all 70 some episodes and was very glad for the story to end with a good ending where all plot points were wrapped up. Planetes is another good one though the romance plot is secondary.
 
To add to the romcom list there's also Yaiteru Futari I kind of like which is a story mainly a bout a newly married couple doing BBQ and other campfire cooking on the weekend and I think I remember Cuprum's Bride being good but haven't read it since the translator dropped it.
Also a little tempted to try picking up Blue Box again since I dropped it fearing it would drag out the love triangle it was setting up for hundreds of chapters (or devolve into a harem) and then end within 3 chapters of the confession, but someone mentioned off hand recently that the main leads got together already 20 or so chapters ago and it doesn't seem like its ending soon (in fact there are a few rumors that it's getting an anime soon).
