There was an anime (or a film?) I saw an ad in magazine in the 00s. It was like a woman with long brown hair and I think a white dress and a red motorcycle.

Does this ring a bell at all

About to start Lodoss War as well since I've been reading good reviews. And after checking the visuals, I think I'm really gonna dig it, the art looks great (with the opening stills paying direct homage to masters like John Martin (imo)).
Ive been watching this and Danger 5 side by side. It just feels like DnD the anime, I like the visuals like I always do with 90s anime but otherwise I wouldnt recommend it, theres not much humor or good plot elements anywhere.

I'm gonna chalk that up to every animu from the past 10 years being about D&D shit. That's why I like checking out older shows, because you see what all the modern shit took from. I've learned where every J-fantasy series got its hot elf waifu companion

I'm two OVAs in and it seems to me like Lodoss War is the progenitor of many modern animu fantasy tropes. The show is clearly first and foremost rooted in the bedrock of western fantasy (Tolkien, the Nibelungenlied, Poetic Eddas etc.), but I notice that Fire Emblem, TLoZ, and even stuff like Rance has likely taken something from it specifically. The protag looks exactly like Rance, the elf's design was clearly "borrowed" by Capcom for one of their 90s D&D arcade games, and the plot (or rather the world and warring God dragons) immediately makes me think of Fire Emblem.

Record of Lodoss war is a series of novels from the late 70s where the japs tried to copy western fantasy, which is why it feels that way. I think the show itself came after the first fire emblem game. TLoZ is more rooted in shintoism than western fantasy and most of its fantasy tropes themselves come from japanese reinterpretations of DnD, which is why Ganon is a pigman. Nibelungenlied though, idk how you consider it to be western fantasy cause its a more traditional morality tale, closer to greek myth than western fantasy. Siegfried himself is just German Hercules/Achilles/Perseus right down to the bathed in dragons blood invincibility bit, the jovial character bit, the dedication to the task bit and more bits. Sure there are bits of western fantasy ripping off greek myth especially in the monster department but that was much after WWII.

Just leaving this here. They adapted one of my favorite chapters today from GS. My boy is having a breakdown. Next episode... they better not fuck it up

The wizard boy sister twist really shocks on it's own, but damn this one just hit hard. It's sad that they censored the rescue part tho.

So is this pretty much just gonna be a Dragon Ball GT Kai?
Yep. Dragon Ball should have ended after GT's one-episode OVA. Not that Super and everything else is bad per se. More like it comes off as fan/nostalgia service rather than actually wanting to continue the story for its own sake. I think even Toriyama has to be tired of Dragon Ball at this point.

Considering it airs on Crunchyroll, I'm not surprised. I noticed that. The chance of a Sony owned company showing the woman in the chair naked instead of this:

Is next to zero. Still shocking, but not like it was in the manga, especially with how brutal it got. However, I hold out some hope for the blu rays to un cuck some of the censors.

Most anime are aping more recent eastern MMOs (which is why even in non-isekai anime everyone has a fucking stat sheet they can see, an item box, and the ability to see advanced tooltips as a super rare skill) but eventually if you go back far enough it does become DnD yeah. One of my favorite lost in translation things is that Japanese kobolds are dog people instead of tiny humanoid dragon men because one of the early translations talked about them as though they were yappy dogs and the nips took it literally.

Oh it's that scene. This little tidbit is only covered in the LN, but the worst part of that entire encounter it only happened because Truth really wanted a squad wipe that day and they would have been fine otherwise. Gods are fucking dicks
