Decided to start reading Ousama Ranking. I'm frankly kinda shocked at how good it is so far. The art style looks like it's inspired by the Renaissance as well as older manga. (Supposedly, the mangaka is in his 40's, so it makes sense). The characters are likable and I'm digging the plot so far. (Up to Volume 3 at the time of writing this)

Also, Hilling is best mom.
Aha, I just finished reading it ten minutes ago. I picked it up because I saw there were a million chapters and wanted to see what happens in the next arc. Turns out there's like... ten new ones.

It's good but I'd recommend the anime if anyone's on the fence over reading versus watching.

Man, I dunno why I took so long to start Highschool of the Dead, it's pretty goofy thus far. Starts off as a serious zombie outbreak and within a few episodes stops taking itself seriously and goes for a balls-to-the-wall lulz fest with bouncy tits. The dub is a bit off-putting at times, though, but seems like even Sentai knew pretty quickly it was always meant to be dumb fun, so might as well become a gag dub.

Just hit me that Triage X is kinda like a sister series. Now that is some dumb fun titty action series I was happy I had picked out at random. Wish there'd be another season.

I really liked in the last Bocchi episode that her bandmates actually ask if she's bullied, it's a small thing but shows they actually care about her and it's not the usual media case that people look at someone with social problems and just take it for granted.
Also another good thing is how the show has fun with animations, especially when Bocchi goes ballistic.
Yep its honestly why I like this show. Animation is supposed to be more experimental than live action where we can expect things to not act same, from faces or bodies. They're clearly using the animation to show her social anxiety

Anybody got some recommendations for any classic anime? I'm in the mood for some oldies but goodies, but I'm not exactly sure where to start. Year range around 70s to 80s.
Have you tried
1) The original Gundam,
2) Nausica of the Valley of the Wind,
3) Fist of the North Star,
4) Macross/Robotech,
5) the first Lupin III movie (by Miyazaki who also directed Nausica of the Valley of the Wind), etc.

Unfortunately, the writer half of the Satou Bros. died so we're not going to be getting any more of either.

never read the manga, that might've been an idea from the original author (also they didn't ask, kita just clarified it right from the start, they were just glad it didn't happen).

what nearly killed me tho was the dam intermission in episode 5, that's 11/10 comedy.

Armored Trooper VOTOMS, which started with a 1983-1984 52-episode TV series, and has included four short films, a 12-episode OVA, and two 6-episode OVAs released over nearly 30 years. A unique take on the mecha genre, in that mecha aren't wonder machines but coffins for soldiers designed for mass production, the four-meter tall all-terrain Armored Troopers.

In the Astragius Galaxy, year 7213, the rival space nations of Balarant and Gilgamesh have warred for a century for reasons long forgotten. As the exhausted powers reach an accord, a group of Gilgamesh soldiers decide to fend for themselves and steal a valuable subject from a secret Gilgamesh research facility. Special Forces transfer Chirico Cuvie had just joined the group, unaware of their intentions and is nearly killed. Found by Gilgamesh forces, he's subjected to enhanced interrogation techniques, and escapes to track down the men who tried to kill him and find out what actually happened...

There was, among others, spin-offs including the OVA series Armor Hunter Mellowlink, where a soldier goes rogue to avenge his comrades on the officers who sent them to their deaths. Notably, he goes up against mecha on foot, but with an old anti-armor rifle.

It's the year 2221. The Earth is ruled by globohomos who buy immortal robot bodies for themselves. If you're not a robot you have no rights. Humanity has taken to the stars -- people buy tickets to the Galaxy Express and disembark on a decent-looking planet to try to build a new life for themselves. This usually ends in misery and death. An orphan boy, Tetsuro, is given a free train pass to the farthest terminal station in the Andromeda Galaxy by a beautiful lady (pictured) with sinister motives; it's rumored the planet is such a bountiful paradise they hand out robot bodies to anyone for free there. So he sets off on the journey and gets to see a parade of human sins and folly.

Very based. Christian. No faggotry whatsoever. No fandom. Has an episode in which a protagonist discusses the industrial revolution and its consequences, and another in which (((the media))) are behind both sides of an endless war. The beautiful lady gets her tits out a lot. Best watched an episode per day.

Don't read the plot or summaries or character backstories, they're all wrong. Especially don't read the plot of the movie, it's both wrong and Game-of-Thrones-level terrible. The original author, Matsumoto Leiji, is notorious for massive retcons both of the story and the RL facts, and not giving a damn about consistency. He's still alive at 84 years old, but this remains the only flagship story of his he actually got to finish. The series is faithful to the books, the difference is mostly in TV runtime and budget constraints.

You could easily do something taking place around and in the California Gold Rush, even just using that as a backdrop, or something like what the Antonio Banderas Zorro movie does. Even that recent Lone Ranger movie has a similar idea because the silver is all on Indian land.
There have been a few manga and manwha that took place in the West. Nothing quite like Golden Kamuy though.

I think "Red" was the one that focused on a Native American guy on a quest for vengence, and there was always Priest, of which that B-movie was made after (though that one is more supernatural)

Red was actually a pretty good manga, though its 90s and more in the vein of Trigun or Berserk

Priest is actually really good and underrated due to how disappointing the movie was (vampires have basically little to nothing to do with the manwha). Instead, picture a Silent Hill or Devilman, but it takes place in the West.

ie: its Biblical demons and basically Paradise lost, taking place in the mojave. Where Hollywood got the idea for vampires baffles me.

There are a some manga out there that deal specifically in the West and cowboys, but those two are the best imo

1: I've seen the OVAs and liked what I saw, though I want to re-watch them. There's some things lost to me that I don't quite understand. The original series is still on my watchlist.
2: No, but I've heard of it. Debating if I should watch that or read it. Most likely both, but I would like your opinion on them.
3: Nope. Heard of that and it's a crime I haven't seen that yet. It looks pretty awesome.
4: Nope. Not sure where to start, but I'm thinking with Do You Remember Love.
5: Yes. Didn't really like it because it didn't feel like Lupin to me.

Start from the Megalopolis Central Station at midnight.

You've summed up that entire series better than anybody else. It's a shame I haven't finished it yet, because I really do enjoy it.

And that GIF of Maetel is just gold.

Not sure why people like the cyberpunk anime. It's mediocre at best.

I like the world building, but every female falls in love with the male character despite him never returning any affection or hitting on them, so it's lowkey harem anime.

Also the gun chick is under age (body of a child, face of a child, behaves like a child, at one point gets kicked out of a pub) but of course she's treated like a love interest because it's anime.

I think Galaxy Express 999 has also aged better than a lot of the other old classics from that era too. I'm sorry but Space Runaway Ideon is practically unwatchable for most of its duration.

I'm surprised at how fucking stacked this season turned out to be for the most part. It's probably the first time since like 2016 that I'm not just doomwatching one current anime while watching a bunch of old anime.

Original Urusei Yatsura
Ashita no Joe (both seasons)
Lupin III (part 1 got a nice 4k rescan recently)
Project A-ko (movies 1 and 2 got a nice 4k rescan recently and 3 is getting one soon)
Space Cobra
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (these arent 70-80s but watch then read them anyway pls)

Also MURCIÉLAGO is a pretty fuckin sick manga, think Hellsing but with a crazy sex-obsessed lesbian bitch instead.

Thank you!

Well... finish it, I need someone to sperg with (and bash the movie).

Maybe whoever is currently trying to translate the books will finish them, too (there's only a volume and a half left). The books have a different, and weirder, ending. But the series is better overall: rich stories, better developed and sympathetic characters, far fewer scat jokes (seriously, there's a chapter that's just "lmao nigger farts").

And that GIF of Maetel is just gold.
I know, right?

Debated watching it myself. Not really sure if it's worth the hype.

Say no more.

I'll try reading the books when I get my hands on them, but that last bit just sounds painful lmao.

Maetel's so gorgeous.

What makes it unwatchable?

@HexFag Thanks, man. I'll keep an eye out for those.

Ideon is sorely filled with incomprehensibly dumb characters, plot points, and really tired cliches. The conflict is too one-sided and practically no one outside of a few of the protagonists is even remotely likable. I think it's still worth watching for its influence and the ending, but getting there is a rough journey and you'll be pulling out your hair at how dumb so many people are. I'm admittedly not a huge mecha fan in general though.

Trigger is a normie bait studio, a lot of cool shit, but very little on the depth. It is also really helped that it does feel like legit Cyberpunk which is a dead style nowadays.

Yeah. I'm trying to get into mecha a little bit but there's so much shit to wade through. I will keep that in mind, though, for I am curious about Ideon.

Someone got mad at me for pointing that out lmao. Not that it's a bad thing (I do like their stuff personally).

I also forgot to add the Legend of the Galatic Heroes many people here have recommended. I personally haven't watched much of it because it doesn't really feel like my cup of tea though I will probably give it another go later.
