Man what's with anime having this shitty filter applied to everything now. Do I really have to track down every fucking 3-episode DVD release now because the visuals turn to shit every time pikachu uses thunderbolt.

To be honest I'd rather prefer to have more manga without sexual themes than having a huge ton of manga with useless horny shit and "fan service" in it.
I'd rather just have an anime that shows off tits and then gets on with the episode than just have the whole thing be nothing but useless cockteasing.

Go back to Appalachia, you inbred and puritanical traditionalist cur.

@ShittlerNiggler

(Because I can't quote)

I'd love to see more manga with the type of adult, sophisticated sexuality you see in European comics instead of a bunch of teenage-esque fan service crap.

Your ideas are intriguing and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter

It's because of Pikachu blowing up Team Rocket's missiles in cyberspace. And that's the actual English DVD rip direct from the master tapes from 4KIDS, you're not going to find the original unfiltered version ever in any physical media release.

And how is this any better, anyway? You can at least see everything in the darker filter (I'm going to laugh if it's the subber trying to kick up the brightness to make it look as close to the original footage as possible).

From what I heard, that episode is actually responsible for modern anime having bland colouring due to not wanting to take risk of another seizure episode (even before the rise of colouring using pcs). Which, if true, make Pokemon the worse anime ever made by virtue of ruining the entire genre.

Ah damn you're right, i forgot all about that. Figured it was just Viz fucking with the box sets again, since they like to also take out episodes. That's just an arbitrary example though, it's in every episode and shows up enough to be very obnoxious. Also i doubt that's the original video, but fuck if i know where to find unmolested RAWs of the show recorded off Japanese VHS in 1997.

It really is a shame, because otherwise the first season is legitimately decent. Better than a normal licensed show has any right to be, anyways.

I've heard that was just a problem in Japanese animation production anyway thanks to crunch time that they don't always have the time to review the finished episode before it airs. The colorists should've known better than to have red and blue rapidly cut together as such.

I've never heard about that. Is that where you get the "anime shading" effect that makes screencaps from anime look distinct from fanart? At least for 00s anime, I always thought the bland coloring was just part of the style that was popular at the time, possibly associated with whatever software animators used.

That sort of strobing was fairly common in anime before that Pokemon episode, so they probably weren't even thinking what would happen if they used that effect with those two colors.

A lot of anime in the 80's and 90's used to use strobic shots a lot, Pokemon's "seizure episode" put an end to it.

The whole seizure thing had a wide, wide effect on animation. Maxwell Atoms once talked about how at Cartoon Network, after they switched to digital coloring, they put all their shows through something called "The Machine" - which was supposed to ensure that none of the colors could give a kid a seizure.

Wouldn't doubt it was a wake-up call to the industry.
