Urusei Yatsura vol. 14 - This is the farthest I've gotten in the manga, and something feels off. Last time, I complained about the manga feeling stale and getting into the traditional Takahashi rut. In this volume, she's suddenly including a lot more dynamic panels and varied action. Its like her editors pulled her aside and were like "hey, the anime's popular, can we spice this shit up."

There's also something off about the translation. I don't know if they hired a new translator for this volume, but they suddenly started calling the teacher Spring Emblem after NEVER referring to him by that name in any of the previous 13 volumes. There's other minor differences in the style of translation, but nothing I can really pinpoint. Just a weird change to make so far into the series.

Three more volumes until we have the complete series in English.

Konosuba started out as a fun Isekai parody that later took itself seriously.

Konosuba was written by a man, the illustrations were drawn by a woman. Pretty sure its the same with Shield Hero and Tsukimichi's manga adaptions too.

There's still some potential chance on the ShieldBro's managaka's gender. However, this is just people saying so due to how the story turns out later.

Read up to chapter 60 of SxF after having gotten bored around 40 a while back. It's still a little too repetitive for me but the cruise ship arc was entertaining. I look forward to see how they animate Yor's big fight at the end of it, especially how they'll handle the juxtaposition of the cuts between the fireworks, casino, and Yor's bloodbath.
 
Those of you who appreciate the classics might like to know that Discotek is releasing the Toei classic Flying Phantom Ship later this year - with an all-new dub as well.

This is a film that has never been released in the U.S. even though it's considered a classic in Japan - now that error has been rectified.

There's something weirdly funny about AfO calling the secondary 1A kids this, if only because the #1 Jobber in BNHA is Dabi. Tokoyami and Jirou may not have as much plot relevance, but Dabi's only wins against other characters have been nameless fodder and that one character named Snatch.

I never got Konosuba's appeal, and that is mostly with many parodies, since eventually, any parody will just drink its own piss and go down with the formula its known to mock. Its honestly like clockwork really, from Vampires Suck, to that Deadpool video game, and now with Konosuba (and god forbid the other parodies I've watched that I have forgotten over the years).

Her original birthdate was August 13, which angered the Chinese community. It's also worth noting that Keke Tang's birthdate was also changed, from July 7, to July 17, for similar reasons. I don't know if Lantis/Sunrise will retcon a Love Live! character's birthdate, if it were to be on either January 6, September 11, or December 7, if it were to anger US fans, in a similar way that those original birthdates angered Chinese fans. And with the 9/11 example, I wonder if Hawaiians would get offended by that even more, given that it was also the date that Hurricane Iniki struck and devastated Kauai, 9 years before the incident that would inspire jet ramming in Battlefield 2042. Or if someone had a birthdate of January 17, which was when the Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown, and Queen Liliʻuokalani was removed from office a week later.

Also, has any anime character that was born on January 6, had their birthdate changed, after what happened last year?

That’s me with One Punch Man *sigh*. Haven’t tuned back into it in a while but from what I’ve read on here, it’s not looking very good.

I think the only reason why the official birthdays were changed to appease the Chinese is because China is simultaneously both one of the largest and most lucrative media markets in the world and one of the most censorious.

With America, the only date that I can see getting changed in the official Japanese releases is September 11th to appease American audiences, and even that's extremely unlikely since it probably would've already happened by now.

If any anime characters born on January 6th get a new birthday, it'll likely be as a dub-only thing and be right up there with jelly donuts, kissing cousins, hot sauce packaged in whiskey bottles, pirate rap, and guys with names like Tori Avalon or Darien Shields.
 
Been looking for a place to dump thoughts about what I've watched lately, this thread seems as good as any.

Just finished the Hellsing TV series, god damn did that suck balls. Every show by Gonzo I've watched has been badly made garbage and this was no exception. Not quite as rancid as Gantz among their body of work but getting close.

Also watched the Rintaro-directed Galaxy Express 999 movies - first one suffered somewhat from obviously being a compressed version of a long manga but was pretty good overall. Second one had potential to be an improvement due to being an original story, and the beginning was promising with a more gritty + dramatic tone compared to the first, but it rehashed too many elements of the first movie which don't fit the new story - there just wasn't a good reason for Maetel, Harlock or even the express itself to be present, and the movie would have been better off without them while taking more time to develop the Faust character. It was also pretty disappointing that the second movie re-used a lot of animation cuts from the first, for example the scenes of Harlock's ship firing its guns and most shots of the express - makes me wonder if the real reason all those plot elements were brought back was so they could cut production costs by using the same footage of them again.

Finally, another Rintaro-related propery, the Hi No Tori (Phoenix) OVAs and 2004 TV series - started with the Karma chapter OVA/movie which really hooked me in with its ominous tone and growing sense of foreboding as the story approached its conclusion, then watched the Space and Yamato OVAs which were almost as good. The 2004 show was more of a mixed bag - the longer arcs were enjoyable even though they felt a little rushed, but the shorter arcs didn't land quite as well, with the Resurrection chapter being particularly unsatisfying.

Rintaro is an underappreciated director in my eyes. The way he lets the visuals tell the story and trusts the viewer to keep up, rather than bombarding them with exposition like a lot of other anime, is very refreshing.
 
Revisiting Blood on the Tracks.

I absolutely love how this story jumps from being disturbing and even outright terrifying one moment to bring incredibly sweet and innocent the next. The contrast between Sei’s relationship with his mom and his relationship with Fukisshi is like night and day. One moment, you feel happy when he shares an intimate moment with his girlfriend, and then incredibly uncomfortable when his mom finds out what happened.

It’s absolutely beautiful in how it’s able to shift between the two so effortlessly.
