Yeah, I've been watching anime since the late 90s, renting VHS from Hollywood videos and joining my anime club since that was the only way back then

This was typical OVAs back then and they've softened up to appeal to normies who'll abandoned the hobby in a few years
1. This looks like a normal gag for normies to me. I saw "worse" (e.g. a child's penis) in children's shows.

2. This is (1) an OVA, not a typical anime, which (2) started out as porn but was softened up to appeal to normies during production, and (3) was released in 1986.

3. I said "Jap normies". While I admire and can relate* to your commitment to pantsu, your experience as an (1) American (2) hobbyist is not relevant. For normies, it isn't even a hobby in the first place - they turn on the tv, see a cartoon, and either keep watching or change the channel. I'm talking about the animation industry of the second-largest first-world country. It can't possibly be entirely or largely sustained by perverts and outcasts, whether foreign or domestic.

*I was a fantasy geek growing up. Game of Thrones went so mainstream there were billboards all over my city with streaming service ads saying "find out if Jon lives" and the name of the service. But when I was growing up, you had to be a gold star autist to have even heard of the books. I did because I read Dragon Magazine, which I fucking imported.

We really need a Jap's expert opinion to settle this. Which is it - could you talk cartoons around a water cooler or reminisce about watching them growing up, or would you draw wild stares like you talked about armor class from a Solamnic Plate + Boots of Speed combo?
 
The presently airing third season of Love is War has been quite entertaining for its current span, despite the show turning perhaps somewhat more explicit in its language. Personally, however, that doesn't seem to have a perceivable negative impact on the show's overall pleasantness for the time being,

It is a seinen, so expect it go get spicier eventually. I haven't read the manga but I've heard shit gets wild. Not official doujin level wild, but yeah.

The thing I love about this series is that, where as in a romcom you usually get an interruption of the pairing for a joke, that just ends in frustration, but in this it ends up being a setup to several punchlines later down the road. Instead of frustrating you from a interrupted intimate moment between two people, it just gives you a really funny joke, or a setup to several funny ones.

Also Ishigami's backstory was amazing. The best comedies I think are ones that can take time every now and then to be serious and genuine about something.

lol their first time was a joke. It was funny.

Kazamatsuri deserves more love. I really like the guy.

I'm well aware of such developments. Although i've read the manga irregularly, the teasing versus development-scale starts favouring the former quite heavily after some time, i'd say. Moreover, even many of those without any prior knowledge of the franchise were confronted with the knowledge of a significant event in the manga occurring around the turn of the year, when /a/ plunged into a riot for a week or so over the revelations of the latest chapter.

I don't remember even the last Evangelion film instigating such a passionate reaction in the grand catalog.
 
Among other titles I've been keeping up with, awhile back I found that Kaoru Shintani's manga Desert Rose had been finished mostly with the fantranslations. After 15 volumes starting in 1989, protagonist Mariko Rosebank, aka "Marie the Rose", captain of the all-female 'M' Divison of the counter-terrorism specialist PMC C.A.T. had finally caught up with the terrorist mastermind Gryphon, responsible for the airport bombing that had cost her her son and husband.

There were also a couple of collaborative crossover doujinshi one-shots released and earlier the only one I could find translated was the crossover with Shimamoto Kazuhiko's Blazing Transfer Student and now I found the crossover with Gunsmith Cats had been as well. Hijinks ensue when C.A.T.'s Division M is dispatched to Chicago after recieving intelligence that a terrorist group out of South America is planning a strike on an international conference. Further intel has been provided to C.A.T. via the info-broker services of GSC's Becky Farrah, who has vanished and at first, a few wires are crossed as the team is brought to a certain gun shop...

I still think the criticism holds, in fact I think the redraw makes it worse in many ways. Murata is an insanely talented artist but he has been falling victim to his own excessive sense of scale as of late. Still enjoy the manga adaptation but I really think the climactic battle would have been better if it had been a bit more toned down IE not punching straight through the fucking planet but a bit longer overall. The characters played a greater role in making it interesting than the action and I just don't understand the direction they're trying to take it, if there even is a direction at this point.

It's more of a parody that ended up taking itself seriously. Something Mob did better because it never went overboard too much and ended before it got stale.
 
Watching Akagi since I loved Kaiji (and liked part 2, even with the bullshit "I tilted an entire building using water cubes" shit towards the end). I'm still a retard who doesn't entirely know how to play mahjong though, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the parts in the Kaiji manga where he plays mahjong. I prefer Kaiji as a character but Akagi's been pretty good so far!
 
I haven't read his manga but when the anime adaptation of Drifters came out the first thing that stood out to me from the previews was the long-haired androgynous prettyboy among the grizzled samurai.
I forget the name of the character, but in the side story of Hellsing which involved the samurai-like Yumie and her colleague, there was no clear indication of whether the other character was male or not. Some drawings had what looked like tits, some didn't.
 
Ok this was a pretty final chapter, glad it managed to stick the ending and didn't try and shoehorn into the main series

Sad news was announced in this year’s July issue of Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine, which revealed that manga author Koko Natsuki (AKA Coco Natsuki) has passed away. Natsuki was known for manga such as Yaruna yo Yaruna yo Zettai Yaruna yo Kotori-chan, which launched in the pages of Monthly Action in 2018 and ran until 2020.

Other titles from Natsuki include Usotsuki wa Imouto no Hajimari, which debuted in Futabasha’s Comic High! magazine before moving to Monthly Action, as well as 2007’s Marriage Royale manga and 2011’s Tantei Opera Milky Holmes: On Stage! manga.

According to the magazine, Natsuki passed away on April 18.
 
I really like Shintani's art style. It's a shame that the Cleopatra DC scanlations ended at the second chapter. I liked Buttobi CPU as well. Thanks for reminding me about Desert Rose! Was the OVA worth watching?
Someone posted a Laserdisc rip of it on YT and while it's average in animation quality for the time, I found it to be pretty entertaining. It was a direct tie-in with the manga while it was being published - while in-comic Division M had gone off for the OVA caper, the focus was on a sketchy all-male division of the C.A.T. outfit lead by a mildly perverted and seemingly ineffectual commander the ladies of M had encountered, as they realize on their latest counter-insurgency job they're being set up to take a fall by a dictator. The ladies of Division M come back afterwards and comment on how their job had been tough and recommend that the readers check out the OVA.
