I've been on a big 80's-90's trip lately. Been rewatching a ton of old OVA's and other classics of the era. It has been quite comfy. Especially for stuff that has gotten a proper HD remaster of their 16mm or 35mm elements.

Something was lost when things switched away from actual cells and ink/paint. Shading especially has suffered. I also don't like how radioactive bright things have gotten. It feels like the production staff in a lot of studios don't calibrate their work monitors and everything is rendered out way too bright and garish.

About to rewatch Evangelion now that the bluray is out. It has been almost 20 years since I last sat down with it. Just finished rewatching Nadia, so It'll be fun to see how the studio evolved only a few years later.

I'm just curious, what 80s anime do the people in this thread like the most?

I personally would have to say Dirty Pair or Uresei Yatsura, though the latter is a bit more seventies than 80s admittedly.

I promise you that I am not into femdom

Old shit just looks a million times better sometimes, just look at the first season of Initial D compared to the rest and I was never a huge fan of Dragon Ball's art style but how it used to look is fucking worlds better than the weird plastic, shiny style we have now.
Definitely agree. I think the art style mostly peaked around 2000 with the last traditionally animated stuff. Initial D really is a noticeable example, but that's probably because the character design changes every season and each season looks worse than the last (except the races, CGI in the first season is like PS1 Gran Turismo).
Gundam ZZ
Such a disappointing show. I loved the comedic first half and thought the second half would be like Zeta but then it just doesn't hit nearly as hard and ends up just kinda "eh". I think Tomino should have stuck with making ZZ into one of his more comedic shows and not set it up as a direct sequel to Zeta.
The '80s had some of my favorite mecha series: VOTOMS, Xabungle, SPT Layzner, SDF Macross, and (technically) the original Gundam.
If OVAs count then definitely add Megazone 23 too. Just a seriously fascinating show with so much shit going on, great mecha design, and some of the absolute best animation of the 80s. Even though Part 3 isn't as good as the other two parts.

The original Macross, and especially its '84 film, Do You Remember Love?

Some of the most captivating romance and character journeys of the anime medium, replete with gorgeous mecha designs and beautiful music. Everything about it is wholesome and charming, right down to the characters' outfits and little series hallmarks like its ending sequence with the photo album.

As someone who got into anime during the brainless Shonen Age of the 2000's, I was skeptical about revisiting older series I hadn't seen before, but Macross really turned me into a true believer, and I've spent pretty the entire remainder of my anime viewing experience trying to find spellbinding old gems just like it.

Don't know if this is a hot take or not but for me
80s anime movies > 80s anime OVAs > 80s anime tv series
TBF I haven't watched many too many 80s tv series (off the top of my head the first three gundum series, SDFM, and a bit of city hunter and Lupin), but given a choice I tend to drift towards movies and ovas from that era more. Although I have been really tempted to pick up Ashita no Joe recently, just trying to figure out if I want to go with the anime or manga version.

Patlabor
Gunbuster
Ashita no Joe (season 2 came out in 1980, it counts)

Also, while cel animation is far better than the state of digital animation in my personal opinion, theres a certain charm in the transitional period between cel and digital anime shown in the early 2000s.

I don't understand her. I remember she had a page on Encyclopedia Dramatica. Was she famous in the mid 00's?
You might know her better by the name Rina-Chan. Back in those days, she voiced in probably over 500 videos because all you had to do was email her and chances are, she'd voice in your shit for free. I'm not an expert on her deep lore but I know she didn't react well to trolling and there were a lot of retarded rumors that went on about her that were most likely fake in hindsight, the biggest one being that she shit in a fan's bathtub at a con. If people shat on her for annoying personality quirks then I know nothing about that but she did write some legitimately really fucking bad animations like Brawl Taunts and some Street Fighter thing that was so terrible that Spazkid made an almost 15-minute parody of it which really fucking pissed Kira off and had her write like an essay in the comments, not sure if it's still there but I remember it being really funny. Back then, everyone thought her going pro was a pipedream but I can't help but have some level of respect for her since she actually did it.

Avoiding the obvious answers of any films like Akira and Wings of Honnêamise, off the top of my head, definitely Patlabor, and Glass Mask. Cream Lemon, Guyver, and Bubblegum Crisis were also good-looking. Special mention to Maicching Machiko-sensei because Studio Pierrot was amazing before they went digital.

Also shout-out to all the OPs where the characters danced or did some moves in front of solid shapes and colors. You don't get that sense of characters look like they're putting on a play much anymore.
