I'm not that good with technical terms lol. What is the difference between upscale and true HD transfer? I can't find any comparison screenshots either

As much as a third film would be cool, I feel like the way that it ended was satisfying enough on it's own.

Finished Space Dandy Season 1 a couple of days ago and holy shit I'm floored, it's great! I even like the dub of this show and most of the time I don't even bother with the dub. Something I noticed is that Space Dandy Season 2 started airing months after Season 1 and still has the same OP and ED (not complaining!), why are they still referred to as separate seasons?

Also, this song is sex and a half and I've been listening to it since I've finished the season. Space Dandy has an AMAZING soundtrack.

I'll try my best to explain, but I might be wrong.
Usually when stuff gets transferred to blu-rays, not only is the quality crisper/sharper/brighter or if it's a newer anime there's usually corrections.
The best example I can come up with is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
If there's a bright scene, usually on TV it's dimmed down, but on a blu-ray its way brighter.
Upscaling however is like, making it bigger and cleaning it up a little, so thats when you get those 1280 x 720 (720 standard hd) stuff. Blu ray is when you hit the 1080p - 4k shit. Hopefully that makes sense?

Tbh that makes sense as well now that you bring it up. Will say I thought the kiss between Amuro and Beltorchika was pretty cute and it was nice to see Amuro finally open op a little. Heck it still stings since he was like "I don't mind if you leave me" to her. Amuro is just aging line a fine wine and it's nice to see him deal with all of his trauma. It's taking him a while but he's doin his best.

NGL, I find the whole Lalah thing very interesting between Amuro and Char. I liked Lalah myself and I know I'll eventually get more context (since i'm kinda doin an episode of Gundam Origin here n there to pad it out) but the fact she had THAT much of an impact on the two leads which lead them to different paths to a degree (Amuro's staying on earth, terrified of going back to space and Char staying in space to look but he's just a little depressed which is understandable). I do wonder how much more Lalah's death really impacted those two.

I'm not too sure about how it's with anime, but from my knowledge of film if it's anything similar to scaling an old master up compared to commissioning an all new one it's largely to do with what resources are available. Upscales are probably taking an available resource (like the dvd release) and artificially "scaling" it up to blu-ray resolution, there's only so much they can do to fix it up given the original they're working with. Usually when it's only an upscale it's most likely due to no physical negatives existing anymore or they're too damaged to really get anything out of. A true HD transfer might be similar to going back to whatever negatives (physical surviving film) are available and piece together the best possible image they can and scanning it digitally (usually with a 4k or 2k transfer). Modern technology allows them to extract a lot more from those physical negatives than whatever was used for those original releases.

Rose of Versailles specifically is old enough to have these negatives rather than being fully digital like most modern anime, but I'm not sure if they're actually available to use them for this transfer (they could be long gone, studio isn't allowing them access, or numerous other reasons). Whatever they have, it's not them just taking the available transfer used in their DVD release, but rather a brand new transfer (that might have been made from making use of available physical negatives).

Probably a good anime example to look into right now is the work that Discotek is doing on Project A-Ko. Take what I'm saying with a grain of salt as I might just be confusing different things together and I'm basing this on knowledge on film restoration where they do stuff like what's mentioned in this video to make better transfers:

Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of Space Dandy, has hung around Yoko Kanno so much her eccentricities have rubbed off and he's only capable of making anime with great soundtracks. Macross Plus basically launched a couple of the greatest partnerships in anime, when it comes to series with great soundtracks, that being Shoji Kawamori/Yoko Kanno and Shinichiro Watanabe/Yoko Kanno. Macross Plus, Macross Frontier, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Kids on the Slope, etc. Anything either of those pairings touch turns to gold.

I originally wanted to watch Space Dandy after putting it off for so damn long because of Macross Plus, another great anime with a great soundtrack.

Macross Plus has all three of them, Kawamori, Watanabe and Yoko Kanno. That amount of talent in that one OVA and shit that came from it is unreal, if you think about it. The mood whiplash when Macross 7 came out a few years later was also unreal and funny in retrospect. Watanabe's a great director and Dandy's such an interesting idea for an anime. Different director for every episode.

What kills me is that Yoko Kanno has no serious music education, but she just seems to get genres on an intuitive level. The same woman did Voice, Info High, and then went and did Tank and Bebob's soundtrack. And that's why they put up with her eccentricities. If you ever look at the credits on her music and see "Gabriela Robin," that's just Yoko Kanno. Gabriela Robin doesn't exist, she's not a real person, but this is a thing she does. I don't know that anyone knows why and she'll sometimes insist that Gabriela Robin is actually a person that exists.
 
iirc, the original plan was was for Sayla to be the final girl for Amuro. But for whatever reason Sayla's role got significantly reduced during production of the original show and then her VA got sick during Zeta, leading them to completely shelf her character.

Heck, her work on the Madoka Magica series is also very impressive.

On the note of Madoka, given how much shows tend to drop the ball come the ending, it is amazing that it managed to stick the landings two times including the main show and Rebellion. Heck, should the sequel be revealed at the anniversary event, I wouldn't be surprised if it too manages to nail the ending.

And no, this isn't at all me being both bitter and amused at how AOT ended.

I think she pissed off Tomino somehow. Dam shame, her character doesn't have much relevance aside from the very end of ZZ and some side manga. So much so that my fan theory is she died before CCA and drove char over the edge.
 
Something I've been thinking about today ever since @Dom Cruise mentioned it in an entirely different thread are those anime series that are pretty obscure nowadays but were popular at a specific point in time to a specific age group.

What I'm talking about isn't just anime that was really popular but then faded in popularity but is still well remembered within the fandom after its peak. I mean stuff that seemed like it was super popular for a brief while and then just became totally forgotten.

These were the sort of series that makes you go "You just had to have been there" or "It worked if you were at the right place and the right time"

You had a lot of those in the late 2000's when the anime boom was starting to go bust, but they existed before then and afterwards as well.

Some of the ones I can think of would be Elfen Lied, Fruits Basket, Vampire Knight, FLCL, Air Gear, OHSHC, Trigun, and Outlaw Star.

Cowboy Bebop might've fallen into that category had it not been the debut anime of Adult Swim and actually had a little bit of crossover appeal into the mainstream back in the early 2000's.

It's not just an anime thing, you see the same kind of phenomenon with western animation and live-action movies and shows too.
