Are there any good SOLs these days? Doesn't matter if it's a comedy. Shit like Azumanga and Nichijou was great.
Not sure about GOOD, but there are a lot of them.

Don't know how to escape the trap of volume 1 having a fun premise and likeable characters, then vol2-300 being generic school trips with millions of new characters falling over the original cast begging to befriend them.

I quite enjoyed the Kaguya-Sama series, it fit well into the middle of my comedy/action series I was watching at the same time. It also has an absolutely banger OP in the first season.

Have you seen Asobi Asobase? It's a good mix of comedy, school and slice of life. Some great jokes as well. The OP and ED are as different as night and day. Hinamatsuri is another great SOL about a yakuza guy taking care of a weird girl in an weird capsule that literally falls on his head. The characters are great and its a shame that we won't get a second season.

Seitokai Yakuindomo, if you're okay with the stereotypical 'guy enrolls into a former all-girls highschool' bit. It's technically a harem but there's little focus on romance and more on the everyday life of said guy.

I think Non Non Biyori is pretty great and now it even has robots.

Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro, which airs in the spring, will also be fun if you don't mind that a guy is the central (victim) character.

Things you'll never read before or again after this post: Moon Moon made me give ZZ Gundam another chance.

If I had to point out an exact moment it would be when Judau tried to bite the gundam to keep a grip on it. I genuinely laughed out loud at that. Getting some distance from the series helped too (do not watch ZZ right after Zeta jesus) but I genuinely enjoyed that two parter. ZZ is still just okay as a whole in the end and I still say Beecha and Mondo should have been thrown out of an airlock (okay maybe not Mondo) and the quality of character writing fluctuates wildly, but there's parts of it I really really like. Some of my favorite mech designs like Queen Mansa and Hamma Hamma, delightfully 80s fashion, ANIME JA NAI, and the villains after a certain point in particular.

I was really impressed by the complete 180 Glemmy seems to do, though in reality it's the audience's perception of him. When Leina "died" and Glemmy showed up it was setting the viewer up for one of those bits where the villain learns what war really is and can emphasize with the enemy because they lost someone they cared about. Or maybe we get another Lalah situation where he struggles with blaming himself and Judau for her death. But nope he's just "oh that's unfortunate" and when he goes back to Haman Karn even she comments on how cold he is. He only ever doted on Leina to make Zeon and himself look merciful and good hearted. Right after we find out he's got this creepy genetically engineered newtype farm. Not long after we find out he's only sucking up to Karn so he can usurp her. Even Mashmyre gets to be more interesting as his cyber newtype treatment starts to get the better of him. The way he went out was truly badass. I definitely misjudged the the villains on my first impression.

Haman Karn however never really does much. She spends the entire series looking intimidating without actually doing something. In Zeta she's an active villain constantly fucking with the other parties but here she's just sitting around waiting for the plot to happen to her before getting one requisite fight with Judau in the last episode. She's still fun but it was a waste of her character to have her do so little and then die at the end. I'd be watching Unicorn right now if she lived through to that series.

Damn that's a lot of Gundam. Always wanted to see more of the UC stuff back in the day but didn't have any way to. Now I have and I'm glad I did, it's amazing how much all three of the old UC series influenced anime after it. I can especially see the influence Char's Counter Attack and the original series had on the industry. So far I'd rate the different series like this:

Mobile Suit Gundam: A+
Zeta Gundam: A
ZZ Gundam: B-
Char's Counter Attack: A+
8th MS Team: A+
War in the Pocket: A-
G Gundam: A
Gundam Wing: B ~ A-
Superior Defender Gundam Force: what

I wanna finish Stardust Memories too but I think I need a break from this franchise. I guess if I come back to this again I'll watch Stardust, and then maybe Unicorn, X, or Turn A. I was always curious about X since it seemed to form a trio with Wing and G, and Turn A seems to be Tomino's final statement on Gundam as it was at the time. I dunno if I'll mess with any of the 00s and 10s original series though. SEED apparently bombs halfway through to the point where people are still complaining about it, and 00, AGE, REconquista and Orphans don't grab me at a glance. Maaaaaybe Build Fighters. There's Victory Gundam too but... eh. Definitely gonna watch Hathaway's Flash when that comes out though. I already spoiled myself on the ending of the third movie and holy hell that's dark.

time to shill one of my personal favorites (which over here flew a bit under the radar, but seems japan loves enough to make a real life version)

Tanaka Nozomu isn’t exactly brilliant. But, given that her only goal for high school was to get a boyfriend, who else would fail to realize that attending an all-girls school was a bad idea? Well, there’s always the fallback plan of getting other girls to introduce her to boys they know.

Too bad that Tanaka’s “bright” idea of giving her classmates nicknames based on less attractive character traits has caused her un-flattered friends “Robo” (for her apparent lack of emotions) and “Wota” (a reference to a creepy otaku types), as well as not-friends like “Loli” (who’s hypersensitive about her petite size,) to “reward” Tanaka with the special nickname of “Baka” (“idiot”), which is quickly adopted by the entire student body. Well, maybe the second week of school will be better.

might be a bit wordy for some, but it has god-tier bantz.

also you can never go wrong with Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu and Comic Girls.

I started reading Mashle because of SuperEyepatchWolf's state of Shonen Jump 2021 video. Despite the guy pausing and melodramatic all the time the premise of the manga, "jock competes with wizards at magic school using his strength because he has no magic" is a good hook for a comedy. The art is simple and Mash is constantly having the Saitama deadpan face which makes the character likable. He's a well meaning jock and that helps flip the usual story around. Plus the humor works well, the writer seems to understand setting up the punchline for the panels to be right on the next page which is something I never feel manga creators really understand.

While I sit on my boat for waiting for the English version of Mugen train to drop, My friend has somehow gotten me into BNHA and One Piece again. It's been a few years since I sat down and watched one piece out side of crack videos and man it is so satisfying. I'm kinda all over in the damn thing, but I want to rewatch the whole water 7 arc so bad since that was my jam and the Zoro and Kaku fight was so chefs kiss.

As for Bnha, I only got 1 episode left to finish season 1, the only reason it's taken me so long is because I really despise the fandom since it attracts the absolute dregs of society. My fave's would have to be the Big 3 (esp Tamaki), Fatgum, Overhaul, and Bakugo. I find the male characters in the show way more interesting than the girls (Nejire can stay) so I don't know if that's just a me thing or what.

Hell, I still have Naruto and Mob Psycho Season 2 to watch I don't know why I keep picking up more anime's. I might just try to wrap up MPS2 this weekend I only have like 5 episodes left of it I think.

I saw Go nagi get brought up in the thread a few comments ago and I want to just recommend Violence Jack (if your looking for something super gory) and Cutie Honey (Sailor Moon but with nudity) since those are my go-to's outside of the old OVA of Devil man, y'know the good one where Ryo doesn't look like Draco Malfoy as a school shooter.

One's I've found and enjoyed over the last few years:
Asobi Asobase
Shinryaku Ika Musume / Squid Girl
Umaru-chan
Kiniro Mosaic
Yuru Yuri
Kill Me Baby

As for Asobi Asobase's OP, I swear it was done to to troll first time viewers and/or was made to trick the studio into giving them funding for the series.

I genuinely think the first half of ZZ is better than the second half. Mashmyre is a hilarious villain and Judau gets some interesting character development and when the comedy stops there's some genuinely intense moments. It sets up the second half of ZZ really well and it's really too bad the second half is such a letdown compared to something like Zeta.

Nothing wrong with Moon Moon, it's a silly two-part episode and even if it's a bit filler-y it's still fun.

Gundam X rules, it's basically a love story and surprisingly optimistic for a post-apocalyptic show with some cool alternative takes on the One Year War (one of the main characters is basically a shell-shocked, ultra-grizzled version of Amuro). Turn A is a real work of art--it's totally unique as far as Gundam goes (except maybe G-Reco I guess).

You can skip all the ones that came after Turn A, the best among those is definitely 00 which starts off as a better version of Gundam Wing with a really cool setting but the second half is just a knockoff of Zeta Gundam. AGE is godawful (the last 15 episodes are appallingly bad), G-Reco goes absolutely nowhere with a stupid ending, and IBO has an ending that tries to be a clever subversion but accomplishes nothing but pissing the audience off.

And there we go. Feminism will infect China and Japan now. Can't wait for this thread to devolve into political arguments.
china =/= japan. Billibilli getting fucked will have zero long-term impact on the japanese market outside of chinese investors pulling out of japan, which, considering how much damage chink investors have done to japanese media over the past decade or so (thanks tencent) is all for the best in the long run. fuck china.

Has there been any updates on the Eva 3.0+1.0 situation? Last I heard it was delayed indefinitely sometime in Janaury. Assuming Covid vaccines are rolled out at a decent rate, could it be finally released sometime late Q2, early Q3?

I highly doubt they'll be announcing anything until they're 100% ready for release, presumably with no more than a few weeks between the announcement and the release date to minimize the chances of anything else happening to delay it. I'd expect it in the summer.

I'll second Asobi Asobase, one of the funniest anime in recent years.

Another good SOL anime is The Demon Girl Next Door.

I'm 100% sure it's just an excuse. The film takes forever to be finished and Corona is just an east excuse.

Wasn't this because some streamer kept spamming how it was shit and getting his fans to report it off the platform?
Also, they really should've gotten someone to watch the show, nothing in this article is right, I get that its "immoral material" but its kind of your job to at least glance at the episode summaries.
