It's surprisingly expensive to make a well-produced anime episode, you're looking at $100,000 for a high-quality 25-minute ONA episode if it's all hand-drawn. It gets a lot cheaper with 3D stuff like Ajin or RWBY, but the art style generally isn't liked as much as traditional hand-drawn stuff.

Edit: There is a relevant CrackerMilk video for everything.

Yeah, the hand drawn stuff is ridiculously expensive. Which you would think it would get cheaper over the years, but NOPE. This is why a lot of anime incorporates 3D stuff for things that would be complicated and expensive to animate. And I honestly cannot fucking stand the 3D style. To make it look good you'd have to pour the amount of money to make it look good hand drawn, and then what is the point?

That video is amazing btw.

I really wish there were more cases like Made in Abyss, where a rich motherfucker just sponsors an entire season of a property he likes.

If I was a billionaire, this is what I would do. Fuck philanthropy, or yachts or cars or 45 mansions. I'd make series I'd want to see even if they weren't profitable.

I just caught up on Chainsaw Man. Weeks ago I stopped right at the beginning of the fight with the gun fiend. I thought that was gonna escalate and end up as the final fight and this series. I figured it was gonna stay relatively "normal" as far as it could be. This isn't Fire Punch I told myself. ahahahahaha oh wow. That was fucked. So fucked. You know, when Agni made that face, you know the one, that was only about halfway through the series iirc. He was not done suffering. It starts out bad enough, you know Aki can't be saved and Denji standing over his corpse amidst the rubble is horribly tragic, then you see Denji and Power coping with it. Even though it was such a short bit you could feel that whole time they spent just distracting themselves with video games and ice cream. You felt Denji's breakdown. It was real. And then fucking Makima happened holy shit. Denji's response was so much more effective than if he had just started bawling. That stupefied numbness matched what I imagine most readers must feel in the moment. It was real and unreal at once. I have no idea where this is gonna go but it's gonna be one hell of a ride.

Also fully armored Chainsaw Man looks like a Dorohedoro character.

Have you read the latest chapter? It came out early this week. The fact that all that led to Chainsaw going to eat a burger is hilarious. Man, it sucks being Kobeni.

God, I want Makima to die. Like die really really hard.

Also Kobeni cannot catch a break at all, god damn.

That scene was hilarious and tense at the same time without compromising either feeling. That's harder than it looks too too, it's so easy to have comedy disarm horror completely, and vice versa.

I'm not sure how many people here would care about it but one of my favorite romance manga Horimiya is receiving an anime adaption next year from Cloverworks. I'm really hoping it'll get a good adaption but with it being a series that focuses on being a romcom I'm worried the anime might not be able to capture the proper timing. I don't know how much they'll be able to cover since it'll probably be one of those 12-13 episode series that never gets anything more. I'm wondering if they'll include the part where it's very strongly implied that Hori and Miyamura have sex, it's a fairly early chapter (37) so I don't see it being too far a stretch.

I'm hoping they don't entirely sideline the side characters to rush the central plot since a lot of the series fun comes from seeing everyone interact, especially the few times it focuses on the Hori Family. Kyosuke (Hori's father) is always hilarious when he shows up to cause chaos and even chapters that Hori and Miyamura barely show up in are entertaining to read, the chapters of just the latter hanging out with the boys doing dumb stuff are a treat.

tbh I can't stand most dubs in general, even the stuff that comes from the US, and over here literally everything is dubbed, so might be part of it too.
I can probably count the number dubs that are imo better than the original on one hand (and even one of them is 50/50 since the dub censored some parts).

Noir has one of the best dubs in my opinion. Monica is in it unfortunately but she's actually very good as her character is a quiet amnesiac. Shelley Calene-Black, Hillary Haag, and Tiffany Grant are excellent. In fact its definitely Shelley's best role. Only minor quibble I have is the pronunciation of Mireille.

Azumanga Daioh is another old ADV dub that does things very well. Luci Christian as Yukari is everything tbh.

I also reccomend Book of Bantorra for another performance by Shelley. Underlooked work imo.

Chainsawman is amazing, but it is 100% going to be ending soon. Which is ok, its told its story. It really felt like a lot shorter than it was. Makima being a villain was an amazing twist. She's just absolutely batshit insane. Don't care if she can't control Chainsawman. Its an honor to be DELETED FROM ALL OF EXISTENCE by him. Don't care if she wins. The fact that she was building up Denji's happiness in order to just fucking break him to basically become her tool is the most cold-hearted shit I've seen a villain do. Not for revenge, or redemption or even a higher fucking purpose. She wanted to break Denji's contract with his beloved Pochita because she was his fan and wanted to resurrect him. And not even care if she loses in the process.

Makima has already won. Even if Denji devours her, what does he have left? Nothing. Like, if she lives but can't control Denji, she'll just constantly try to mentally break him for all fucking eternity. If he eats her, he has no one in the world. It goes to her name, the control devil. She's manipulated everything perfectly. I feel so bad for Denji. He never had a fucking chance. He lead a shitty life, was forced to kill his dad, was forced to kill his friends. He says it himself: He's not smart enough. And when he does try to think things through, it hurts too much. He's so unlike other protagonists, a flawed, sad character. He can't out think the enemy. He can't even out kill them. They've already taken everything and are victorious. I mean, I guess we need the burger scene because this is going to have a sad ending.

Who knows with Fujimoto, there were times during Fire Punch that I was sure it was going to end, only for it to keep going. That being said, I also thought Demon Slayer was going to go a lot longer than it did, so my sense on these things is pretty shit.

Even then you'd think some rights holder or personality (like some old VA) would crowdfund something related to an old anime or manga, be it a sequel or a remake or a spiritual successor or something.

I'm going to get hate on here, but Monica had her time. She still has a narrower range than over a decade or so ago. The problem for her is that range doesn't get her the 'best girls'. Best girls get thirsty fan boys and girls. They get the best attention from the fans. Think how popular Rem from Rezero is.

Oh, and fuck Monica she's a cunt. I feel it's a requirement at this point and hell, it feels good to say.

Back when I was newer to anime and largely watched dubs I didn't mind Monica but she never really stood out to me. She was just kind of there and I was more a fan of Caitlin Glass or Laura Bailey when it came to FeMC roles, but I never minded her or most of the other VA in those dubs I watched. Of course, with the whole KickVic stuff it's soured my impressions of a lot of them and does take away a bit of the enjoyment from those dubs knowing how awful some of them are. One of the reasons I stopped keeping up to date with KickVic was it was really bumming me out to see how awful the western dubbing scene was.

The only thing I'm thankful about is that a lot of my most favorite dubs and dub actors were mostly Canadians with Ocean Entertainment who I don't think (Hoping here) got involved with the drama. They seem so much more chill and, being frank, produced better dubs. Fingers crossed that Bang Zoom also kept out of the shitflinging because I enjoyed a lot of their stuff too. :(

Anyone here watching Great Pretender? The final few episodes came out today (raw I assume they'll get subbed soon) and I absolutely loved it. Easily one of the most underrated anime of the year that got shafted by Netflix's retarded release schedule so it went under most people's radar.

Gambling Apocalypse: Kaiji Omnibus Volume 2 has been yet again delayed until November 2020.

Yet on other sites, like Books A Million and RightStufAnime, they change up the dates from October 27th to November 3rd.

I have a strange feeling it would be postponed again.

Wouldn't that be called Japanese Psycho, then?
Good point, but I think the title would have to be a lot more creative than that.

Doesn't the story basically end after that? It kind of just meanders on after all that.

I'd say the story pretty much ended with Miyamura asking Hori to marriage and her agreeing. Everything after that I've treated as SOL extras that help develop the side cast while also enjoying the main couple. At this point in the story there isn't much worry about relationship drama between Hori and Miyamura, any are just more treated as a joke (Like Hori no longer getting jealous of other girls being near him but rather guys since they seem like a greater "threat" to her), which is refreshing to read.

I much prefer the route Horimiya has gone over similar romance because too many either stretch out the "will they won't they" phase to ridiculous lengths, slap relationship drama in when they finally get together, or just end at the confession and deny any of the cute couple fluff. Really wish more romance series took the refreshing route over the same garbage drama, you have to dig for the good romance and a lot never get updated. I've had to make do with the numerous otome game isekai series that have flooded the manga and webtoon market, some are pretty good but most are just decent (a lot are generic crap though).

the fact that this mangaka author was the same one that did Karakai Jouzu No Takagi-San and Fudatsuki No Kyoko-Chan is just mere proof of the talent that this man has.

Reading the latest chapter of Colette wa Shinu Koto ni Shita I can't believe the author managed to get me super invested in a side plot focused on an Otter finding his forever home. The author is so good at writing wholesome fluff that I didn't even care that the last several chapters didn't have much in the way of Colette and Hades moments. I'm just super happy that the Otter managed to find a new family with everyone in the Underworld and realized that's what he was really looking for. Last couple chapters have been a roller-coaster of emotions and I'm glad it's all resolved now.

If anyone is interested in a fluffy romance series that takes a lot from Greek mythology I'd give the series a read. It doesn't focus too much on the Greek Gods aspect but the other gods do show up every so often and are a fun bunch. Seeing a new chapter pop up each month is always a treat, does make me wish that Ookami Heika no Hanayome translation team could find a new translator so we'd get new chapters since I also really enjoy that series. It gives me a similar feel to Colette but focuses a bit more on plot progression and court intrigue in between the cute couple moments.
