It's funny how Kon's work was often about highlighting the less glamorous side of Japan, the polar opposite of the vast majority of anime.

And yet it wasn't done in an obnoxious, off putting way like how modern SJW media is, it's something anime could use more of to be honest.
I think most anime don't really glamorise Japan outside of specific inventions (katanas and ramen). Usually you'll have the regular social commentary about the nail that sticks up gets hammered down.

Whatddya mean Van's goofy? I think he's hot.

Too bad he's loyal to his dead wife. Dude needs the love.

His hat is a little goofy looking.

It's rare that you see homeless characters though, let alone have them as the protagonists, let alone have one of the protagonists be a fat girl.

There's also stuff like the Brazilian family, if you went by most anime you wouldn't know Japan had an immigrant populace at all (one good anime though that deals with immigrants albeit in a metaphorical way is NieA_7)

Anime should first and foremost be about escapism of course, but there's nothing wrong with a little variety and more anime dealing with atypical subject matter like Tokyo Godfathers would be interesting.

It's kinda hard to broach those subjects in a regular setting and, in general, there's not a lot of commentary to be had. Like, immigrant population exist but there isn't a lot that can be expanded on them when you do include them other than having a strawman from either side. The best commentary is shit that most people aren't aware of because the media tries to hide it.

You know I've always found it kinda funny how Thunderbolt fantasy isn't really anime but since it's on crunchyroll and it has JP voice actors people just tend to treat it as an anime anyway. But then I try to search for it on MAL to keep track of new movie or season announcements and it's not there and then I remember it's not actually anime.

Tokyo Godfathers did a reenactment of a group of young hooligans beating up homeless people that actually happened before or during production. The media brushed it under the rug, but it stuck with Kon.

For reals, the man was way ahead of his time. His death was a serious blow to the industry, like how Ryuutarou Nakamura's was.

An update.

Ajia-do Animation Works is a relatively little-known studio with an eclectic portfolio. Definitely not going to expect a Demon Slayer-esque boom out of this adaptation, but I'm willing to see where it goes.

I'm just happy that its not Perriot.

Apparently they made Izetta: The Last Witch, never saw it passed the first episode but from what I can recall it looked alright so I'm going to keep being cautiously hopeful.

Tonikaku Kawaii (or perhaps more accurately to say, I'm Sorry For Hayate the Combat Butler) is to be released this October.

We are also getting Gyaru and Dinosaur of all things, coming this May:

All in all, some cute and harmless entertainment.

That dinosaur reminds me of Bloo from Foster’s.

Fellow weebs,
can anyone explain why this auction ("junk, no claim, no return") closed at this absurd price?
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e416201000

$173 + shipping

Even if the records (@Steamboat_Bill I checked the auction and they're vinyl records, not Laserdiscs) are scratched to hell, I suspect the buyer wanted the vintage album covers for wall display.

$173 for - what are they, laserdiscs? Don't ask me, but that's a pretty damn good bargain if you're getting all that for $173.
I've only been watching the auctions for 6 days and it really isn't. Weeb cred items are really cheap in the promised land before international shipping. I just won 10 LPs "as is" for $15 and 12 assorted vinyls (returns accepted) for $51 (I fucked up and had to outbid my own maximum) in much better condition. TBH I'd have probably fought for this, too, if I knew for sure my space princesses were the culprits.

A friend of mine went to Japan last year and said you couldn't really find old stuff there. I asked him to find me some Japanese VHS tapes, he couldn't find any. So this is news to me.

There are 72000 hits at yahoo auctions for "vhs" as of this writing, and over 12000 hits for the VHS anime category:
オークション > 映画、ビデオ > ビデオテープ > アニメ
auction > movie, video > videotape > anime

The nav menu is on the left. Drilling down, https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/list4/2084057185-category.html is Japanese animation on VHS and then it's alphabetic I think. (God that website is awful.)

Here's the VHS anime category at a proxy buyer/forwarder's site (they do not translate search queries so use Japanese in the search bar):

You don't have to use that proxy (look up the item you want by its auction ID), but be aware that Yahoo Auctions requires the cardholder name to be spelled in kana and probably other constraints on top of that which won't let you pay directly. Zenmarket will allow you to lie on the customs form about the price, and WhiteRabbit about almost everything.
