I've heard elsewhere that the spear guy has the ability to rewind time and the events of the show happened because he always changed the past when the shield guy kicked the bucket, kinda making his efforts feel less impactful.
That was a spin off, The Reprise of the Spear Hero. Maybe it converges at one point, but as far as I know it's a different timeline where Shield Hero never gets accused of rape due to the Spear Hero interfering. Their personalities become fairly different so it doesn't really make sense for it to lead into the main story.

As far as I figure, it was just a series the author made afterwards because he liked the Spear Hero and maybe wanted to cash in on some fujobucks.

I enjoyed MHA vigilante. After finding it from a Kiwi that recommended reading this, I gotta say it felt refreshing on the underdog hero trope and all the other shit I've put up with reading manga where the hero has shitty powers but turns out it's super OP.
Although I will admit it gets abit bullshit down the line in later chapters some of it dealing with the main character getting plot armor.
But overall I really enjoyed it. Don't like MHA that much but found it to be a nice side story and some more background lore.

So I was gobsmacked last night when someone told me they made an Ao Oni anime.

For those who don't know, Ao Oni was a horror game about Japanese kids being chased by Barack Obama. It was basically the big horror trend before Slender, Amnesia, and Five Nights at Freddy's took the crown.

Previously there was a live-action movie that played it straight, but apparently this anime is playing the whole thing as a joke.

Yeah the anime adaptations just suck ass. I don't mind jokey parodies, but this is Studio DEEN we're talking about here, it didn't work out. They're just so desperate to get their next Higurashi, but they can't fucking do horror properly. Higurashi was that lucky.

Even the movie? I just took a glance at it and it seems like Ao Oni the Animated Movie tries to be more serious horror so I thought it might be better.

I remember also kinda-enjoying the first live-action movie despite it essentially using a version of the "it was all a dream" twist IIRC but I never saw the second one.... actually now I can't remember if there actually was a second live movie or if my mind is making that up.

Still kinda funny that there's all this for a game that really was more of a meme than anything (I played Version 6 back in the day, I'm given to understand some people actually prefer the earlier versions for various reasons).

Even the movie?
Even the movie. Despite being more serious/straightforward, there's no sense of tension, terrible CGI, uninteresting and forgettable characters, shitty "twist". Don't even bother, can barely even consider it a movie.

So I'd love to have a Witch's House and Ib anime, but don't let DEEN touch them, ever.

I actually recall on Youtube some person was doing a homebrewn Ib cartoon (an adaptation of the game's story). I don't recall watching more than a few seconds of it, but it wasn't a bad effort for what was probably a young person working solo.

The only issue I remember was that I didn't care for Ib herself, IIRC she sounded like a standard little girl, which is never the sense I got from the game. But again I only watched a few seconds and I'm going by decades-old memories at this point.

I always liked the works of Uri--Crooked Man, Paranoiac, etc.--but I have fears about how well they'd translate into anime, even if the adaptation was competent.

It's still funny to me how can a spin-off story be somehow better than the main story.

Also, obligatory:

It's a bit outdated tho.

Also, Flowers did a lot of retcon bullshit which basically made it so the entire first series was pointless
No, it didn't.

It just opened the view of the world (something that Takei akways did)

The thing is: every 500 years we have this shaman king fight, but as you can imagine there were various shaman kings. Right now they are preparing to fight among themselves but since they are fucking strong, they would use normal shamans as proxy in this battle.

Nothing about it was retconed, Hao just found out there are limitations to what he planned to do.

I really like flowers and super star since it continues the same world view that takei had (humans are kinda shitty and do shitty things), rising os a new god (capitalism), state of humans around the world, this is a theme in all his works.

And in volume 6 Takei confirmed that shaman king as a whole is a sequel to Butsu Zone (all his works are connected in some way).

And unlike for example Boruto and Naruto, Yoh and Hana are totally different people, they arent similar at all, even when using the same spirit (amidamaru), and later he got another spirit (death fighter zero, a kamikaze pilot)

Even his own team is fucking weird, having asakura's branch family, men (son of jeanne and Tao Ren using bason and shamash, Alumi (silva's daughter and Anna's disciple).

Flowers and Super Stars and the other manga greatly explores the shaman king world in ways that Takei alone couldnt do it since he takes lots of hiatus (for example right now)

What did you think of Anna? The 2021 anime reboot didn't do her any favors in my opinion.

It's a shame it probably couldn't because it's one of the only series kids today actually would benefit greatly from watching.
Friendly reminder that GTO should be read rather than watched, the anime is far from complete. It even skips the first volume for some reason, and it's one of the best, introducing Onizuka and his conflict.
Shonan Junai Gumi should also be read for teenager Onizuka and his buddy Ryuji mowing down biker gangs and trying to get some pussy. Just as good as GTO, maybe better.

For the whole series, we were under the impression he could just wipe out humans once he became Shaman King. If it's not a retcon by some technicality, it's still bullshit and makes him seem far less of a threat and the idea of stopping him less important. Like, if they were going to go in that direction then it would have been funnier to have the series end without him being convinced not to go through with his plan just for him to find out in order to enact what he wants to do, he'll have to go through all kinds of bureaucratic bullshit that'll take him thousands of years. Like would it even really matter if he was still evil in this case?

I didnt watch the new anime, but there are 3 annas, you have to be more specific.

How could he be less of a threat if not even when he was alive they could beat him? He was going to be the shaman king no matter how many times they died to become stronger

This is one of the things I like the most in the ending: unlike the very poorly done 2001 anime final, they needed something that wasnt just plain strenght, the power of bonds in this case with the train.

Hao isnt wrong in thinking he should eliminate humans for being evil, takei see humans as evil in the broad shaman perspective with different characters, not just Hao (even Yoh say something like that)

This is something that other "saviour" types characters like Sati and Jeanne strughle but still believes. Even more when SK deals with different religious perspectives and ideas of salvation

yoh's fiancee.
She is a cool character when younger, her arc with Yoh is quite cute, wanting a life of luxury in superficial way to kinda push Yoh to be better and aim for the SK position.

Still, leaving her son to be raised by Tamao and go to war torn countries with Yoh is a big L. We barely had new content of her since flowers.

But shamans' way of raising children is all over the place (jeanne and ren took care of Men), yoh and anna adopted redsem and seyrarm but left their own son.

Redsem even looked more like Yoh when younger than Hana
