I love how this thread evolved from "Crapping on CA and their business decisions" to "Having intelligent conversations on stretching your dollar making no budget movies, with some perspective from CA members past and current."

And to add to the "impressive movies shot for less than CA movies" is Krisha, which was shot for $30k in 9 days with the director's family as the cast, and completely sweeps the floor with the AT4W "movie":

Primer was shot for $7,000. Box office $424,760. Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

Fucking $7,000.

24K on that set? Are you shitting me? This piece of shit cost 24 thousand dollars?

I don't think this is true. I truly believe that he is fucking the numbers. I can buy the camera people getting paid a grand but by the same token I look at the cinematography (ha!) and it just doesn't look it. You could have grabbed literally any random person and have them hold the camera and it would have been the same.

There is the possibility that he got taken for a ride and overpaid to the extreme. It happened to the IRS:

Here's the fucking video that cost $50K:

Now what do you notice about the set? It actually looks like the old Star Trek set. And you know how much the set cost in that little PR video? $2400. They paid through the nose because they hired dudes to do everything and got overcharged. Notice how this was still below $64K.

This motherfucker is either lying or he is mentally retarded. Possibly both. But I would bet my left nut that he is lying about the budget. Also, you can get your tickets for a train/bus/whatever refunded, it just takes a while.

I'll only say that the amount Lewis states in the screenshot I provided earlier, from what he states about paying the actors, was accurate. It was just as he said. For that reason, I have no personal reason to expect he's lying about how the rest was spent. No other commentary on it one way or the other.

Yeah, can't say I buy into any of this. As I've said before, while I can believe things like the catering and payment of the cast. Everything else looks like it cost less than that (The bridge set in particular looks like it was maybe a quarter of what it cost to be made, if that). And if it did total nearly $64,000. Then he definitely got ripped off.

Lewis obviously paid other people to make props and set pieces for him, mix that with living in Minnesota and it's not hard to believe he got price gouged for virtually everything. Think of the people who buy Alienware products instead of making their own build and that's what I envision.

Aren't the property taxes in Minnesota typically more than the mortgages held against, like, every home?

It could go either way. But until we see receipts I'm calling it that he pocketed most of the money.

On your 2nd point, you may be correct but like I said earlier the Red Letter Media crew are in the next state over and are able to get shit done and not spend $64K. It's possible that Linkara has zero connections to the film making community over there, but in this case, he could have easily made those connections and not have to pay out the ass.

I might have missed what you're getting at (I'll admit to being occasionally dense) but Lewis lives in an apartment, and therefore doesn't pay property tax.

Wasn't the studio he rented out located in Minnesota? What I'm saying is renting space should cost more if the property taxes are higher.

You're certainly right, it was in Minnesota. I'm unsure of whether or not the studio's property taxes affected the cost of the place. But yes, those studios regular fees are something like $1,200, and Lewis managed to get it down closer to $1,000/day.

Just pointing out that generally studio offer other services as well. He may have been able to negotiate that down to $1k/day at the expense of buying other services from the studio, which would account for the inflated cost - cutting into your front end profits while gouging the customer on the secondary products.

I have a question for @LordKaT or @MarzGurl, what is the benefit for a reviewer to work for CA nowadays?
I don't see any upside for the smaller contributors there over just going it alone on Youtube. I figure back in the day there was ad money to be split in exchange for the publicity of being on the site, but that seems to me to be an outdated setup.

There was never any ad money split. Channel Awesome doesn't pay its contributors. We were paid solely through Blip's ad revenue back in the day, and today that's now through YouTube's ad revenue and through the kindness of people through Patreon. I stay there for the extra exposure. Otherwise, I'm not a big name, and nobody would ever find me. There may come a day where I outgrow the need of it. I don't know. I've already been doing it for years, and I'm still not big. Admittedly, partially my fault, because I try to stay so far away from internal drama that I sort of end up not talking to fellow producers at all, to do crossovers or anything else of the sort. I guess I made myself kind of cusp on purpose.

Anyway, yeah, you're kinda right. There's little other benefit lately than the exposure and the potential that the other producers recognize you, feel kinship with you, and want to work and network with you. Unless you are actually a direct Channel Awesome staff member (which I'm not, just a contributor) that works directly with the Walkers on their regular video productions. They and Mike Michaud are the only ones that get a paycheck through Channel Awesome.

I think this is a good thing. Some of the people you've made an effort not to associate with are absolutely toxic so I don't blame you for keeping your distance. Just by virtue of the fact that you seem like a decent person I'm more inclined to give clicks to you than I am to them. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to find some of your old Land Before Time reviews...

Check out the Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills Review too!

Honestly sounds like CA is worthless to join @MarzGurl , because usually you at most get a slight bump of views by participating in others videos and they don't give much of a fuck if you're a minor. Might be because I see no benefits aside from imaginary though, since there's not even the fallback of them being your friends or something.

Honestly they sound more shittastic than joining Machinima; at least they steal some of your revenue in exchange for making you a lot tougher to take down with DMCA idiocy.

That doesn't surprise me, the company's been a mess for ages, I wouldn't be surprised if Michaud's been pocketing the money all this time for his own personal gain.

Would explain why the current site looks like a messy pile of shit.
