That review was when I lost interest in him. His skits were already starting to get grating for me, but they were at least supplemented by just him talking to the camera and clips from the film to offset them. But I cannot bring myself to watch an episode consisting entirely of skits. Also, as you said, he did not present a particularly compelling argument as to why he did not like the film, which is often a problem that I've had with him before (and to be fair, he does a much better job when he's not donning the Nostalgia Critic persona). RLM manages to do that with their reviews while also providing a relatable feel to them, as they feel like me and my buddies bullshitting about films.

To be fair, I thought Doug's review/extended sketch of Pixels was pretty good but that's a pretty low hanging fruit.

What are your thoughts of Doug's new review on the Jem and the Holograms movie?

It was okay but I thought Rebeltaxi's review was better, more concise, and didn't have forced jokes.

Right, I think it took 9 years for the US to realise Saddam Hussein was a baddie.
That bleeding eye effect wasn't bad.
The singing WAS however.
FUCKIN' SCREAMER! And a knock at Norm Of The North.
Nickelback jokes? Seriously?
OK, the robot Christmas party joke was pretty funny.
Who the fuck is Rob Scallon?
Doug complains about manipulation, editing and laziness.
And another shot at Hollywood studios.

Some legit criticism, but in the end, just another 'BOO HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS!'

I used to like Doug back when before the sketches took over. Looking back, he wasn't the best critic (and as it's been said before, his reviews are actually more recaps with a lot of nitpicks than anything), but this new stuff is mostly embarassing.

New Critic is like if BoJack Horseman was way less funny and insightful.

When Pan mentions the out-of-context fan footage, it's a throwaway segment less than halfway in meant to highlight the patheic desperation of the filmmakers. When Doug mentions it, he chimps out and calls the filmmakers heartless monsters for manipulating footage of their sincere declarations. I take it Doug's never heard of Hanlon's Razor before?

Well there a pretty big different between the two, Rebel Taxi one is an actual review with comedic comments in it and Doug's is using the movie as framing device for bad comedy skits and soapbox speeches filled with false sincerity.

That, and it's not thirty fucking minutes long.

I may only like Brad, but those commentaries made sitting through those things worthwhile. Granted, I left them on as background noise, but it was still interesting to hear what went wrong with those "works".

I googled their Suburban Knights commentary so I could listen to it myself, and dailymotion kept lagging and stuttering around this one scene that told me what went wrong with its production:

The cherry on the sundae was that Doug had his arm draped around Luke's shoulders while the video lagged

If it kept lagging, you might as well have just downloaded the video using Keepvid since it's compatible with Dailymotion.

Also the Scooby Doo 2 review is out.

The review itself is actually hilarious but the skits are autistic as fuck. This sharp contrast really highlights something I've been noticing for a while; Doug cannot write his own humor.

I don't mean his comedic reach doesn't branch beyond parody, I mean he literally needs film footage to do half the work for him because that's how much help he needs to be funny. He literally needs the work already halfway done for him. He is nothing without it.

I know this seems like a "no, duh" scenario but the thing is, it could be argued that the anniversary "movies" and Demo Reel weren't really a pure sample of Doug's comedic ability since those were touched by other hands.

True, but when said other hands are just as incompetent (that and Doug did write most of those films, if not all). Then there isn't much a difference besides more people to shift the blame towards.

Yeah but that just makes it all the nicer to have an untainted example of his comedy, no one else is responsible and no one else may or may not have had influence with that joke or this joke. Then again, Demo Reel was just the Nostalgia Critic without the Critic himself, something which really spoke a lot to how utterly empty he is as a writer; even when he's moving away from a business model where claiming fair use is his only lifeline, he still can't stop making videos that are just about other people's movies.

It also spoke a lot about him as a comedian in general, everything about his "satire" is just spastic, delivered with no sense of restraint or subtlety. Nobody acts like a person in his skits, every joke is over explained (it's not funny if you have to explain it) and there's no cleverness in the humor, it's just a blunt recitation of what's going on with a fuck ton of mugging for the camera.

I'm almost tempted to do a text review of Demo Reel, actually.
