So I came across this, which is someone listing in no specific order the annoying things critics do. It's actually really good, uses a lot of examples, and contains a lot of stuff we gripe about.

Not all of those "critics" are good to begin with, but I admire that SOMEONE was willing to do this at all, instead of blindly worship people with clearly no real taste to speak of, from my standpoint.

I found this on tumblr yesterday. Obviously that means it could very well be fake, but it still made me laugh anyway.

Does anyone remember that Internet review culture actually predates Youtube by many years? I remember the method before then was to post screencaps of movies in a walkthrough-like written synopsis explaining why each scene was bad while mocking it. The big innovation presented by video streaming was that it allowed people to rip whole clips from movies and interperse your commentary between them. But the larger culture of snarky reviewing is almost as ancient as the Web itself.

I would argue that's because reviews are relatively easy to make for any budding Internet personality. All you have to do is give your opinion on someone else's created content and you're good. So, love it or hate it, I don't think review culture is going anytime soon.

Yeah, and that's the thing. It's only going to get more hack-y and lazier before it either gets better or dies off.

Here is my ranking of critics

GOD TIER
SFdebris (doesnt go into tard rage ever and makes extremely well thought out insights)
Mr Plinkett (a true rape hero)
Cinemasnob (he reviews the actual worst films ever made and the worst pornos ever made, unlike most other poseurs)

AWSUM TIER
Nash (his doctor who reviews are awsum)
OANcitizen (he reviews the most pretentious films ever made in the most pretentious manner possible and it fucking works. plus he introduced me to vase de noces)
Spoony (his ott humour always brought a smile to my face)
Cinemassacre (his horror and monster series is great, that is it)

FUN TIER
Linkara (eh, his style of humor and subject matter always made me giggle slightly)
BennetTheSage (like his anime reviews and his opinion on most of the "classics" errybody else worships)
DiamandaHagen (as much as I think her doctor who reviews are full of shit, her other projects like bonekickers are commendable)
Ashens

MEH TIER
NostalgiaCritic (dont particularly hate, dont particularly like)
Phelous (his shit reviews pretty much equel his good reviews so...he gets meh)
NostalgiaChick

UNFUNNY TIER
Welshy
AngryJoe

SHIT TIER
FilmBrain (just. shut. up. you. limey. cunt.)
ObscurusLupa (unfunny, uninteresting, and obnoxious to the extreme)

GOOD GOD JUST FUCKING DIE...TIER
BlockbusterBuster
IrateGamer

What about the likes of Mr Enter and PieGuyRules? Where would you place them on the list? Granted, they only cater to fellow autists who still care about SpongeBob, but I'm just curious.

I don't really like the Nostalgia Critic's reviews, but his editorials are really good. Every single one is well-written, diverse and relatively free of bias. It's definitely some of his best work.

AVGN is way better when he's just James.

Seriously?

They're just him over-thinking shit or answering stuff that had already been answered.

See Doug try to justify his skits and other new additions that have turned off much of his former fanbase. He says his audience should just accept that he's changed instead of "sticking to the old formula".

Though to be fair, I didn't care for Christmas with the Kranks either.
I can glady accept that he's changed but this does not mean I have to continue watching him if I no longer enjoy his commentary.

Pretty sure people know what they like and don't like. If old fans are still not enjoying his new sketch filled reviews, then they certainly aren't changing their minds. Telling them to "just accept it" is so off-putting. I'm saying this as someone who used to enjoy Doug's old content, pre-Demo Reel disguised as Nostalgia Critic reviews.

Side note, I forgot about Christmas With the Kranks, a really awful movie. An actually talented critic could make a funny review with it, I'm sure.

Not only would telling them to "just accept it" is off-putting, it's also going to leave a bad impression on them. They would no doubt choose to find another critic to try and enjoy as Doug keeps churning out content that has to have sketches.
