Was Doug ever about nostalgia? Consider how quickly he developed NC and TGWTG into a business as soon as he got some viewership. Furthermore, he's always gone for low-hanging fruit; originally, he never touched movies/TV he didn't grow up with, which incidentally are more popular things everyone has heard of.

I mean, to the viewers the draw is still the same (they want a perspective on something they're familiar with) but money and recognition was always Doug's objective. He's made it clear NC was only meant to exist for as long as it was necessary to secure his salary. Remember that his ambition is to be a powerbroker of Internet-based entertainment.

Demo Reel was the result of him wanting to move past the critic, believing his fanbase would support him no matter what he churned out. It was part of his dream of becoming a legitimate film maker instead of another nut screaming into a microphone about bad movies. But, his success was based around his character, and without the Critic no one cared.
 
Doug somehow got Don Bluth to appear in his new review.

Yeah, but that was at least related to the topic at hand (the Toxic Avenger video game). Why was Bluth even in NC's video? Let alone, what was Doug even trying to review?

I mean from the looks of it (mostly due to the shirt), it may have been another commercials episode. But why?

Bluth is most likely trying to get publicity for his Dragon's Lair kickstarter.

As much as people shit on Demo Reel, I wanted to give props to Doug for attempting to move past the Nostalgia Critic and try something new. He wanted to do some new, but all he had were a bunch of whiny 5 year olds complaining they didn't have the NC.

Doug's probably paying these people to show up with the money CA raised to fund that shitty game show. There's no way in hell actors with actual brains and talent would do this free of charge. I hope.
