Why the fuck should anyone want to watch their shitty self-insert fanfiction? (If you want to do that, then make a video series of that on its own or write it down or something else. Don't put it into something where it won't work and is completely unrelated to what it's being injected into.)

I touched on this before, but my theory is that it's a financial and mental compromise.

In other words, it would cost them money and time to separate their "plot" into its own webseries, and more importantly the focus and wherewithal to create new content have always been the CA producers' scarcest resources. I wouldn't doubt that a lot of them would resent the labour of making additional 10 - 15 minute sideshows on top of their regular 20 - 30 minute reviews when they could just be making 20 - 30 minute reviews of which one-third are skits and story.

The worst nemesis of every internet critic has always been themselves. Narcissism, overambition, procrastination and anything else you could shake a DSM-V at.

On the subject of reviewers having storylines, people who complain about that shit (and rightly so--don't get the idea that I'm defending reviewers with storylines) always seem to give RedLetterMedia a pass. I'm not even talking about their Half in the Bag storylines, which are all comical farce. I mean the whole Nadine shit in Plinkett's Star Wars reviews. Now I love Plinkett's reviews, but that Nadine arc was just boring dogshit and reeked of the same kind of stuff people lambaste TGWTG critics for doing.

Now I love RLM, but I find the "smart", "adult" people on the internet who poo-poo kids' critics like Doug and Linkara tend to worship RLM the same way TGWTG's fans do. Right down to parroting their catchphrases the way some autistic pre-teen might parrot shit like "I am a man" or that stupid Chuck Norris meme.

At least RLM has quotable bits with universal appeal ("what's wrong with your faaaaace"), but I can't be the only one who notices this.

The difference is that the Nadine arc was limited to the Star Wars Prequel reviews and that was it. There was one scene with Nadine in the first review, second review had more of her, and they took the criticism about that and listened and offered the 3rd review and offered the conclusion to that arc as a separate video.

Other than that, there's really no comparison. RLM never forces cringey memes or calls back to obvious pop culture references.

I think the main difference between things like the Nadine "side-plot" and whatever the fuck you want to call Linkara's fanfiction is that at worst, RLM's skits are just kinda boring and ultimately rarely ever intrude on the actual review at all, and when they do it's only for like 10-15 seconds. Pretty much all TGWTG skits are at best, fucking cringe-inducingly bad and at worst a crime against humanity and unlike RLM you can't easily skip them because it's fucking everywhere (20 minutes of an hour long review should not be reserved for you dressing up as the white Fedora Ranger).

Honestly, if they (or their fans) were smart, they'd have spun those off a long-ass time ago and that way, made more money off of them. But no, it's all "Let's just shoehorn them into our reviews, hopefully no one notices."

But then they'd be forced to confront the fact that no one fucking cares.

They're trying to rip off MST3K. The only difference is that with MST3K, they were lampooning the whole movie rather than recaping it before tacking on their own opinions. The former is just some guys having fun and goofing around, the latter is a bunch of guys trying to sound smart.

Also
Mike > Joel.

I'm not saying they're completely equal, mind you, just saying that there's a lot of people who fawn over RLM the way kids fawn over TGWTG and ignore when RLM does similar things that they complain about TGWTG doing.

RLM has made the same mistakes as TGWTG, the latter has just made them much, much more severely. And often.

Considering the formula of MST3K and the fact that Linkara had some box robot that looks like a reference to MST3K, it would make sense for their fan-fic self-insertion being thrown into their reviews.

Not even, they're mostly just dumb guys trying to be average.
If we were to also look at the former, MST3K, most of what they did isn't like the "angry" critics in screaming or doing some skit, it's just making commentary and jokes while watching a film.

The main difference between RLM and TGWTG is RLM are less lulzy. They do not seem to have the same level of arrogance that the TGWTG crew have, at least from what I've seen. I have only recently started following RLM, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Hopefully, they took good notes of Channel Awesome and avoid making the same mistakes.

But one lulzy thing I can think of that they generated was getting a Star Wars fan pissed off enough to write 108 pages of autism in rebuttal to their SW prequel review

At the very least, RLM is comprised of people who've known each other for years, effectively eliminating the necessity to gamble on the chances of a contributor turning up batshit.

I was idly watching Todd in the Shadows' "The Top Ten Worst Hit Songs of 1991" and at number 1 was Bryan Adams with "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)". During this segment of the video Todd went on a diatribe against Adams for having all his negative reviews and info pulled from Allmusic in the name of censorship.

Hm... that reminds of me of someone Todd's girlfriend (and Todd himself) happens to support... who could it be?

Nope, can't possibly think who that could remind me of...

Todd has been drinking Lindsay's Kool-Aid like Keifer Sutherland at a Christmas Party. It's a shame, because despite their retarded politics, I've always felt Todd and Lindsay always made good videos. Fuck, I watch Todd's videos to this day even after the shit with Maker killed his Google presence.

The worst part is, he isn't even doing this to prop up an image in front of his fans like Doug does with everything. He honestly believes Anita Sarkeesian and Zoë Quinn are martyrs to the dude-bro equivalent of the SS and that they're in constant danger of being challenged to an illegal street race. None of the shit Anita and Full McIntosh pull ever seems to draw Todd's attention that his martyrdom happy colleagues are more full of shit than Kent Hovind at a medical seminar.

It's a shame because Todd used to be relatively sane on this kind of thing. I remember in one of his end of year top 10 worst lists (I think it was 2009) he ripped into Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" calling it one of the most moronically sexist songs he'd ever heard. He was also one of the few people to give a reasonable, rational analysis of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines". He literally only started this kind of shit after Lindsay started supporting Anita Sarkeesian.

I occasionally watch and even enjoy Todd's videos (he's one of the only Channel Awesome folk I still pay any attention to) but I feel uncomfortable watching them because I now know what a douche he is.
