It would be better to protect existing elephants. Cloning a mammoth would be pretty iffy especially since you'd be bringing an animal that's almost human-level intelligent into a world it has no others of its kind.

Also what the hell would the environmental impact be of wooly mammoths coming back?

There’s a project to do it. I think it’s called Pleistocene park or something. They want to bring the mammoths back to the tundra and taiga to stomp them down and turn it into a specific kind of ecosystem. It’s pretty cool,
Some people think mammoths weren’t actually mega-cold-place creatures either. Probably more northern to mid Europe kind of climate.
We should protect elephants too because they’re great. And bring back the Pygmy elephant. I’m all for de extinction of mammalian megafauna.
