This is not unique to Singapore and true for every common law jurisdiction I know of, including the U.K. and most U.S. states. "Assault" is the act of intentionally or recklessly causing another person to fear immediate unlawful violence, while "battery" is the actual, intentional or reckless application of unlawful force to another person.To the point "assault" is the mere implication you may attack someone or a threat you may do it and "criminal force" is you actually doing it.
