I've made this point often and forcefully in the past when people have said that because Amber didn't grow up in a war torn country, she has nothing to complain about. Being put in foster care is one of the worst things that can happen to a kid.
However.
You're conflating it with a false idea that all foster parents are greedy pigs who only do it for a measly stipend and all foster homes are rat infested ghetto slums. That's objectively untrue.
These people had a large, beautiful home and Amber wasn't sleeping in the kitchen on a palette of straw like a medieval scullery maid. They treated her well, and continued to do so even after she fatted off to somewhere else.
Even in San Francisco today, 20k/month is damn good money. In today's money, that's $27,000.

Even if Amber was lying about her experience with the Feeney family, thinking that it was 'perfectly fine' to sleep on the kitchen floor or in the garage is fucked. I’ve seen stuff like this happen with certain families. They protect the addict at all costs. It’s treated as either no big deal or some secret that isn’t allowed to be talked about. It really is the “elephant in the room” and for once I don’t mean Amber.
Twelve step programs will tell you to take a moral inventory and try to make amends, but even if you don’t go to AA/NA, not dealing with your past is a damn good way to relapse.
Having said that, I’m not sure what really happened here. It could have been that Amber was being a bitch and throwing her mom’s addiction in her face instead of actually sitting down to discuss the issues. It hardly matter though, because all these people are absolutely terrible.

When we last left our Witless Wonder, Amber was playing the game of seeing how many BuzzBalls she force herself to drink before collapsing and dangleeng an ankle, or choking on her vomit.
