I watched this show and I actually enjoyed it even without Omni-Man around (who even then was one of the best characters of the show) since some of the other characters were pretty fun, but the main character Mark is just decent at best while his black love interest is probably the worst character in the show for being inconsistently written (it says a lot about her that Reddit, 4chan, and even Tumblr all agree that she is shit) especially for this scene which makes her look like a selfish bitch who is a borderline narcissist.

One thing I like about the show is that it both subverts some superhero tropes but still seems to actually embrace the genre and isn't taking the hack approach of just shitting on everything.

Omni-Man himself is also really great for not only being a genuine badass but he is the best version of the evil Superman trope by actually being a more layered character with human traits than just being evil like most Evil Supermen (even DC itself falls in this trap). I hope the show continues to be good but I have a feeling there could be a decline.
both Amber and the gay friend are incredibly capricious and are seemingly only capable of showing complete contempt for their friend, Mark, who is constantly under tremendous stress. Was the show written by White supremacists????

honestly, I feel like Eve is the only somewhat well written teenage character in the series. I feel like she best communicates feelings of teenage angst and immaturity in ways which don't come off as obnoxious or particularly whiney. Overall, I don't care much for any of the teenage bullshit in the show, but she's depicted as the only teenager which isn't completely insufferable.

The gay friend was just decent and feels like the typical best friend character in these superhero series. Amber is a cunt and Eve was actually a pretty good character. But I do agree the highschool stuff is weak between Mark and his friends but it could get better in season 2 since they all know he is a superhero under high stress so there won't be more secret identity shenanigans hopefully.

This is my favorite semi modern comic and I am upset by several things in an autistic fashion. Been looking for this thread since the premiere.

I read Invincible because someone on here mentioned it in a comic thread years and years ago, and I happened to look. He was so confident in its greatness. He was right. You can read it online free by literally googling ”read invincible online free”. Read it and then buy it if you like it. Nothing wrong with trying before you buy.

But this spergfest is full of comic spoilers so beware.

Here are my main issues.

The rewrites of both William (Mark’s now flaming and not at all closeted for over a hundred issues best friend) and Amber (Zazi Beats self insert character replacing Mark’s first gf) to make them into unironic woketard caricatures thereby stripping their characters of any and all value or development was my first issue. I can overlook it because it’s B plot but it was pretty insulting to the comic fans IMO. Amber was always annoying, except it used to be on purpose. She was a ditz who was really into her first boyfriend, but they weren’t compatible because she realized she wanted a normal life, and a normal boyfriend, and he was a fucking superhero. That’s neat but the novelty wore off. She was also physically abused by her next bf which will be memory holed because asking that hairy woman that played (also race swapped? ish?domino is the color of a white crayon) domino to play a character with weakness would be rape or racism or something. I guess not coming off as a huge self important bitch is sexism. What would I know, I’m just a fucking woman. William was always just a guy who happened to be gay and didn’t realize it til after platonically dating Eve and going to college. He met that guy that got turned into a robot when he was his classmate and then roommate, then bf way later. His coming out is like two panels and Eve is just like “oh cool, makes sense now that I think about it. I’ll tell Mark he will be happy for you.” William liked comics and didn’t say creepy sex stuff about Omni Man or alienate people with his one note gayness. He was just a regular dude, which wow I guess gay people can be normal what a concept?! There are hundreds of different characters in this comic. Every race, sexuality, age, size, alien, robot, species, whatever is represented but they still felt the need to gender swap several of the members of both versions of the guardians of the globe for some reason.

Debbie (Mark’s mom) was given a too intense “STRONK WAHMEN” personality so that it isn’t sexist for her to not deal with her husbands betrayal well. As a human woman with feelings and problems, she is allowed to show weakness, and her go with the flow attitude was part of what Kirkman loved about writing her character. Alcoholism issues hinted at but will be memory holed because...pick a buzzword.

Eve has a period in the comics where she is overweight because she isn’t using her powers and that‘s her main way of burning calories. Mark thinks it’s hot that she’s ”thicc” but she hates it because she’s a teenage girl basically. People mock her like a lot but her bf doesn’t care because he loves her and also man like boob. This will probably not be allowed because it is “problematic“ and will piss off both fat and skinny people, none of whom actually read comics.

Amazon took the most unintentionally inclusive comic that I have ever read (that wasn’t pandering or insulting) and somehow made me feel excluded.

Also do not like that the budget was spent on things like giving John Hamm a circle jerk celebrity cameo for no reason and that every voice actor has to be the same color as their character and also have an Oscar. It’s v uncomfortable.

Animation outsourced to Korea, the most notorious place for cheap animation and it shows. The mixed in random CGI is sloppy. I like the violence, it looks ok in motion because they make it fast so you don’t notice the cheapness as much.

Pacing is not great, but closer to the author‘s original vision which his publishers shut down during the comics because it wasn’t engaging enough. There is a lot of insight in the author’s notes in the omnibuses. Comic pacing is better tho.

Soundtrack is a waste of money and annoying and kinda dated/will date the work further.

Still watching, obviously. I blame these issues on the MCU for the starting the sell capeshit to normies on Twitter trend decades ago, but also understand that no adaptation is going to be perfect. I miss comics being cool.

edit: spoilered lol
I’ll take my tophats now :semperfidelis:

What the fuck did I just read.......

It makes sense that J.k. Simmons is carrying. He made portal 2 a lot more enjoyable. Basically, he should be in everything even if he has a minor roll because he's so good.

This show is literally just a stupid version of Watchmen. It so clearly wants to be Watchmen, but its so far up its own ass it doesn't realize it has shit for brains.

JK Simmons is fucking great though. Its a shame that, because I have actually read the shitty comic, its all downhill from here.

Omni-man basically heel turns on his heel turn and becomes a hero again. Invincible forgives him despite the fact that his dad used his face to murder hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

There is a fucking awesome fight between battle beast and thragg, the viltrum defacto leader. They spend like a fucking week fighting to the death. But that is really it, the rest is pretty badly written and boring.

Mark never stops being a fucking bore and you are fucking stuck with this loser for the entire thing. And going by this season there is absolutely going to be more Social justice pandering. Even in the comic Mark gets cucked and HE fucking apologizes for it just like he did when Amber had her bitchfit that he didn't tell her his secret identity.

I started to watch this after seeing the memes and in order to burn steam from my current workload. After ending it I have somewhat mixed feelings.
First I will clarify that I didn't read the comic so I feel like I can sperg confidently since most of my complaints are series exclusive.

  • The first thing that bothered me was the vanity voice cast. Imagine having Walton Giggins (Cecil), Chris Diamantopoulos (best boy Donald and Isotope), Grey DeLisle (Girl Monster and Shrinking Rae), Kevin Michael Richardson (the Mauler Twins), Khary Payton (Black Samson), Mark Hammil (Art, the tailor), and Clancy Brown (Damien Darkblood) all in your voice cast and having them all take a backseat so we can hear "actors doing voice-work" take the majority of the time. That really was one of my main problems with this adaptation, that for the most part characters were adapted so the more well-known parts of the cast could just play themselves. It was already mentioned how Jon Hamm was the embodiment of a vanity cameo, but Invincible is filled with these kinds of things and it just aids in making the unnecessary teenage drama more unbearable when it comes from the Big Mouth school of voice acting. I wouldn't have a problem with the angle of only casting actors according to the ethnicity of their characters if it wasn't so blatant that they are a showing of Appatow's school of nepotism. Sarah Oh (Invincible's mum) just plays her Grey's Anatomy character, Zazie Beets (unbearable cunt), and Andrew Rannells (cummy bottom boy) just play themselves. The rest of the cast is largely serviceable (J.K. Simmons carrying their asses to victory) and the guests are various degrees of just Seth Rogen's friends. This just represents a fucking trend in adult animation about how most often than not, they just pick comedians and TV actors because they are making literally animated sitcoms and using animation to do shit they cant get away with in live-action, down to the simple, uninspired art style. It started with Bojack and has gotten worse since. Yeah, Aaron Paul and Allison Brie were good in Bojack Horseman but no one was going to give them fucking BAFTAs.
  • Minor bitchfit about the sound design: I had to watch the show two meters away from my sis having classes so I watched at the minimum. Voices were barely audible while the sound effects and music are way higher. It ruined my fucking immersion having to mind that.
  • The CGI blends with various degrees of success. It is absolutely atrocious when it is used on crowds though, gave me MTV's Spiderman flashbacks. I even stopped the credits to know who did them. Felipe Verdugo is supposed to have a shit ton of experience in visual effects (I, Robot, the Deadly Hallows 2, and Conan the Barbarian) but I am not very confident when his last TV credit before this was Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures. Not hate though, he definitely kicks my ass with CGI and he is getting paid.
  • The art direction was just standard really. The style is not going to get anyone out of their seats and there are times when the art direction looks too rough (my personal highlight is Omni-Man's monologue in which Simmons is hitting it out of the park and he looks the least detailed in the whole series, sort of running the moment that dragged me to start the series in the first place.) The gore is fine but it loses most of its novelty pretty quickly. Is just average adult animation art style post-comedians start making their own series.
  • I didn't have a problem with the music but I have to say that it is very intrusive and never allowed to play in full. There are times in which the song stops abruptly because we suddenly see shit hit the fan and we have to stop playing rap.
  • I am somewhat glad that I am not the only one that hated Amber (the unbearable cunt). While watching I was taken back to when people hated Skyler White, the difference being I have yet to see anyone batting in favor of Beets' persona. Perhaps my standards are too low but dear God, imagine you date someone that does everything he/she can do for you to make things up and you still find things to bitch about. What helped to hate her is that she is "that character", little miss perfect that with no defects I can't help but hate. Bitch does voluntary work and cuts Mark for not showing up because he is too busy almost dying, bitch wants to study Social Justice in college and cuts Mark because he disappears to save lives and his excuse is asking for help then goes to a frat party where Mark shows up to make sure she is not being abused. Watching her scenes throughout the series was me advocating for not despising she was there and being flabbergasted Mark kept being a simp for her. I think what doesn't help is that the whole series is supposed to take place for several months (more of an issue of pacing) but dear lord, how can I empathize with this bitch if she dates fucking Steven Yeun and winches because he vanishes and I, the viewer, have no evidence of him being scummy about it? She then says she discovered he was Invincible on her own and it's mad because he didn't trust her. This is Skyler White but with a good reason. I wanted to believe this series was self-aware because of Doc Seismic but is motherfucking Seth Rogen so who knows if that was accidental. Wanted to end my pain in the finale when she comes back and kisses him after he almost died AGAIN and also when apparently people cannot connect the dots about who is a hero even though they show their faces.
  • Eve was cool imo, only good teenager. William was ok, didn't mind the sexual powerlevel. Hopefully, season two makes Mark more interesting.
Season 2 is probably just going to be the last ten minutes of the ending and they are saving the true threat for that mystical third season.

Overall didn't regret watching it, there is enough good to balance my grievances but I would be lying if I say I am not experiencing a The Boys deja vu.

The Roundtable basically said that Omni-Man's race of aliens and Omni-Man himself are basically Nazis that want the perfect race and that mortals who are weak get killed off. When Omni-Man bitch slapped his son hoping he wants him to hate him for revealing the real truth and killed people and junk. His son said he still loves him which got Omni-Man to tear up long after he flew into space.

I swear to God I am going Full Omni-Man if this show becomes another Steven Universe. Motherfucking Filtrum was filled with wahmen and POCs going 13% on each other.
THINK VOX!

Not every authoritative "might-is-right" regime is a fucking Nazi parallel.

They have a great cast of voice actors, but there's only a few standouts. Jason Mantzoukas does the annoying asshole improv schtick he tends to do. They made Amber black (which is funny, since Zazie was Domino in Deadpool 2 and they managed to fuck that up) in the animated series and there is some consitantly whiny dialogue. But the fun parts such as the gore and the last episode make up for the teenage angst and drama. I like how for someone that is named Invincible, he was beaten into a coma twice so far.

I mean that’s kinda the joke right? He’s a lot sturdier than your average human, but he’s pretty far from invincible.

Absolutely, I really didn’t like her. I mean I know the joke is that she’s the stereotypical social justice liberal college student to a T, but it got tiresome after a while. Especially with her constantly flip flopping on mark and how she does and doesn’t care about him, only coming back as a gold digger when he becomes a real hero on TV

I got that impression too. The whole idea that superpowers mean that there will be superheroes and you either turn out a hero or a villain is a dumb and shitty trope and I like series that subvert that by allowing everyday people to use powers or having morally gray people with powers (forgot his name, but the Rock crime boss is kind of like this). Eve isn’t exactly like that but she does want to get away from the scene, she runs away from her parents, and has a lot of teenage concerns. Meanwhile everyone else seems superficial in terms of character design and how they act

What the fuck? How do you mess up the series this badly

It's going to be amazing further down the line watching all the secondaries get bait-and-switched hard.

yeah, the 30 year old genetic abomination transplanting himself into the body of a 14 year old so he could fuck a 13 year old girl who is actually a woman in her 20s was definitely a very cool gimmick.
it gets better tho! SPOILER FOR DOGSHIT COMIC AHEAD they end up fucking and she cucks him with an alien woman having a half breed son, he goes in a rage from being cucked and fails to conquer the earth with robots and they take his brain and shove it in a box for the rest of the comic

At least he is actually mad about being cucked and does something about it. Invincible FUCKING APOLOGIZES to his wife when she does it AND THEN HIS WIFE GETS MAD THAT HE FUCKING APOLOGIZED AND HAS THE GALL TO BE PISSY ABOUT IT!?!?!?

well I mean the show is written by a man who killed off his best character in season 2 of his last project

I enjoyed this season and some of their rewrites were cool such as the Guardians of the Glkbe actually putting up a fight. The problem I see is Invincible really drops in quality later in the comic such as the remaining Viltumites turning good after a few months on Earth instead of the Years it took Nolan.
