On Wednesday, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled in favor of a motion to allow the state to execute Kenneth Smith with nitrogen hypoxia.

The use of nitrogen hypoxia as an execution method has never been tested. The gas has a history of being extremely deadly and could pose a threat to the staff and spiritual advisers present in the execution chamber.

Attorney General Steve Marshall posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, after the court granted his motion to allow Alabama to use nitrogen hypoxia on Smith.

Alison Mollman, interim legal director of the ACLU of Alabama, made a statement denouncing the use of nitrogen hypoxia. Mollman stated that Marshall and Governor Kay Ivey could be putting the lives of staff, spiritual advisers, media, and victims at risk if they do not stop Smith’s execution.

Alabama previously tried to execute Smith last year but failed due to a botched lethal injection. Now, they are trying again, only with a method never tested before and could harm or kill others.

Update on Page 8, post #148.

Kenneth Smith's lawyers previously argued that lethal injection was inhumane and that nitrogen hypoxia is a humane alternative, but now they're arguing that nitrogen hypoxia is "untested." Great way to win a gold medal in mental gymnastics, bucko. :story:

Hows that now? By that logic using the gas chamber would put everyones lives at risk as well. Especially considering the gas involved is hydrogen cyanide. The ACLU is acting like the DOC doesn't know how to operate a gas chamber properly. The only thing really changing here is the specific gas being used

That said, it should be interesting to see how this type of execution goes. Assuming he ever actually ends up being executed.

Kenneth Smith's execution date has been set for January 25th, according to Fox News. (Source | Archive)

The Supreme Court has upheld firing squads and (I think) even single-shooters as Constitutional forms of execution. People on death row get shot in Utah without any "failures."

Yet everyone wants to medicalize everything.

How come?

Because people have become extremely squeamish about exterior damage to the body and deem it "barbaric", even though just shooting a guy in the heart is much more merciful than gassing them, injecting them with poison and other mengele shit they do now.

there's a lot of money to be made in ~medical~ executions.
need to pay a real medical doctor, or even several, possibly with specialized assistants. need super special custom equipment to do it, and need special medical supplies..

firing squad on the other hand is dirt cheap. rifles and ammo and men to pull the trigger are very easy to come by for government, so there's very little opportunity for grifting and corruption.

Oh no! Nitrogen gas, the thing that makes up 75% of the air we breathe, is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS GUISE!!!! IT POSES A RISK TO PEOPLE AROUND THE GAS CHAMBER!!

holy shit this is the stupidest fucking shit i've ever heard.

Strap the guy into a chair, put an exit bag on his head, he falls asleep and then dies in 10 minutes. If you want to be less grotesque about it, put him in the gas chamber and let him watch his favorite movie and then gradually pump nitrogen into the room.

How is this hard and why isn't a peaceful drifting off to sleep preferable to lethal injection or being Zyklon B'ed to death?

Because then they can lobby/pressure/blackmail the pharmaceutical companies to not supply the drugs for lethal injection, while doing everything possible to turn Death Row into de facto Life Imprisonment and jack up the costs, then claim "See? Executions are so expensive! Isn't it better to just let them have life in prison?".

If you let them just hang the bastards or shoot them, then the lawyers can't draw out the appeals and court drama as much, and the DOCs don't have to wait for special medical staff to carry out the execution. They can let a bunch of civilians with rifles enter a lottery and get drawn at random to be on the firing squad, and just reimburse them the cost of ammunition plus $25 for gas and lunch...and I guarantee you, you'd have no shortage of good old boys who'd take up that offer.

See, the thing is, even shots to the heart aren't always instant, though six rifle rounds to the heart are probably going to stop it dead in its tracks and cause instant unconsciousness.

That being said, based off what I've read, nitrogen hypoxia is the most surefire way to painlessly and quickly put the condemned to death without turning their chest cavity into ground beef. Even lethal injection is very doubtful in that regard.

We wouldn't want to use a deadly gas to execute anyone.

Who gives a damn about turning some murderer/pedophile's innards into his outards? Use the bastard for target practice and to get a good look at what your munitions do to the human body to make sure they work right.

a single gunshot to the back of the head/neck should be the absolute fastest possible method. it obliterates the brain stem directly which causes instant death.
alternatively, beheading via guillotine is near instant as well, and absolutely foolproof, there's basically no way the executioner can mess it up.

I agree. Firing squad executions would be an excellent way to determine the effectiveness of differents brands/types of expanding ammunition.

With all this wringing about lethal injection and gassing, why don't they just use some seized fentanyl and force an overdose as an execution? I'm pretty sure that's as painlessly as you could possibly die without being in a coma first.

That said, if I ever find myself on death row for making fun of trannies in some dystopian communist future, firing squad is the way I'd go out. Firing squad is the most badass way to be executed.

I remember when an Oklahoma legislator suggested that and people got ridiculously offended in response. Seems like we could use it easily, yes.

Firing squad would be a pretty badass way to go, but the electric chair would be pretty badass if they let me wear a Metallica "Ride the Lightning" shirt for the experience.
