The opportunity for someone who isn't already established as an artist to create a new story/film/drawing and get the gratification of it being seen and appreciated by thousands of people is rapidly, rapidly closing
I'm not sure I really agree with this.
Consider just this forum as an example: we have multiple threads dedicated to viewing people's AI generated art. Multiple threads for listening to AI covers and creations. While we don't have much in terms of AI generated
writing (as far as I know), we do have discussions on it, and it's certainly popular as a pastime outside of the forum, perhaps limited simply by being more difficult (for now.)
I've seen Youtube channels pop up that are wholly dedicated to AI content, varying in size and success just like any other channel. I'm certain there are many accounts from Twitter to Pixiv to Patreon that are based around AI generated artwork, all reaching many people, who are interested in both the novelty of a rapidly advancing tool and the quality possible from it.
But AI generated content just isn't the same!
We also have threads dedicated to showing off non-AI works, and as far as I can tell, those are still going strong, just as many artists, both professional and online amateur, are continuing to post.
I do agree that we'll see many people lose hope, as we did over the past two years of advancement in AI art gen, but I don't believe this will spell the doom for all or even most individuals who still dream of having their work stand out. We're already living in the most crowded and cluttered era ever, in terms of content and information, with those people competing with countless others from all over the world in the online arena of attention. Anyone who is truly dedicated to as far-off a dream as striking it big online through their art will continue through this, because otherwise they would have been discouraged from doing so at the start when they realized they had to beat other artists who get millions upon millions of views every month.
Even if we enter some kind of dystopian scenario that some artists envision, where every single person is magically able to create perfect and personalized content at the push of a button (which won't happen for generations, if ever, since most people simply want to passively consume rather than learn these tools in the first place), then simply by the fact that most content will become AIgen will make their original, novel work stand out amidst the sea, garnering them more attention than they would get now, with its competitive marketplace.
Most people won't make their own movie, because they're lazy or don't have the time or simply prefer spending it on other things. How many people have all the tools they need to make their own novel, or own song, or own
Starry Night, and just don't do so? There will still be a space for the "artist class", and there will still be billions of people who feel the intrinsic human need to observe the works of others for entertainment or emotion. All that will change is what tools they use, and by extension, who composes that class. If anyone turns up their nose at the idea of using AI at all, they might find they are shooting themselves in the foot compared to their contemporaries.
Any artist who kills themselves over these advancements was, realistically, not going to make it into the .01% of artists anyway.
