An Afghan soldier has attacked foreign troops at military base, with unconfirmed reports saying four US soldiers have been killed.

The attack took place at a base in the north of the country on Saturday.

Abdul Qahar Araam, the Afghan Army's 209th Corps spokesman, said the soldier shot and killed four US troops inside the base, news agency Reuters reported.

The US military command, based in the capital Kabul, said they were "aware of an incident" at Camp Shaheen.

The camp, in the northern city of Mazar-i-Shariff, is the base of the 209th Corps.

Situation is still unfolding, so we'll look at it.

Dad was deployed to the northern part of Afghanistan around 2007 and a consistent statement he made was that we should just abandon the northern provinces to Pakistan. The area is so unstable and local leaders are often more loyal to Pakistani tribes than Afghan. I'm of the opinion we should abandon the region entirely.

Please tell me how Hamid Karzai is stabilizing the region again. /sneed

That was a good one. Tell another.

Karzai was one of our biggest fuck ups in the reconstruction. Relatively minor warlord with a reputation for being a conniving cheat as PM over regional leaders that had no respect for the guy. The biggest fuck up was not deploying enough troops to take and hold territory.

I would say this assessment by George Carlin was probably pretty accurate, even with Karzai still alive.

No matter who the United States puts in charge to bring peace and order in Iraq or Palestine or anywhere else, those people will be killed. It’s that simple. Anyone who supports the United States will be killed. Peace and order will not be tolerated.

It isn't terribly surprising to me that the locals are resisting the changes the US has tried to impose upon them after centuries of having it the way they are trying to revert to.

You can't govern there anyway. The Afghanistan area isn't known as 'the breaker of empires' for nothing.
