There can be legitimate reasons for not seeking mental healthcare when mentally ill. If the symptoms are bearable, the medications can cause more distress than the illness itself. Typically, there's a weird grey zone where the symptoms cause problems but not enough to warrant spending time and money on therapy or medication, I.e. just read the list of symptoms associated with giving teenagers sertraline (Zoloft), a drug commonly used to treat BPD.

That all being said, tumblrites probably will never have this concern given that they probably haven't even been diagnosed with a mental illness by a reputable medical professional. Having a mental illness , as others have said, adds to your oppression score and you can't leave anything on the table in the tumblr oppression Olympics. Besides, if the symptoms were really as severe as the tumblrites claim, they would definitely not be part of the grey zone and would need immediate institutionalization, drugs, and therapy.

I know there's some legitimate reasons, such as money and insurance and whatnot, and not all symptoms are heavy enough to warrant going to a therapist. Those kinds of people sometimes state that outright, but the kind I'm talking about are the people who fuckin ham it up and moan and bitch about their mental illnesses all day and/or suicide bait their followers. Those are either fakers or people who seriously do need legitimate help but believe that all doctors are albeist shits.

I completely agree with you there. I still have serious doubts as to whether or not as of these girls suffer from any mental illness other than being manipulative thots.

Yeeaah, you're right. They just make it so difficult knowing who really has it and who doesn't- the severe ones have started blending in to the fakers.

A lot of these "actually-*mentalillnessname*" individuals are self diagnosed yet act as though they are an authority on everything...and if you have a dissenting opinion, you're ableist.

That's what makes these blogs so dangerous. It's hard to tease out the very ill from the MBI, but the anti-recovery rhetoric they peddle is likely to really negatively affect the vulnerable people (who actually are mentally ill) and bias them against seeking help.

Yes, the anti-recovery message they spread around is very toxic. They make people feel as though they must keep suffering without treatment in order to seem more "valid".

Or that treatment is "ableist".

In my city, that same philosophy resulted in a mother decapitating her own daughter because she wasn't treated and had been off her bipolar meds for years.

It blows my mind that people pretend to have these disorders, and have created communities where being a monster is celebrated. Your personality makes you who you are. There is something deep a person with one within that is broken, and it's terrifying that someone would brag about how cool it is rather than seizing any resources with both hands.

There's so many examples of people with disorders/illnesses coming together for support on the internet, but these pricks have made it so anyone looking to get help with a cluster b is bombarded with nuclear levels of assholery and self justifications.

To be honest if they are adults and they're doing this shit they may well have some form of PD. I guess when you think about it the kind of person who would make up a PD for attention probably massively overlaps with people who actually have PDs, maybe we're looking at these communities from a sane(ish it is the farms) perspective and just can't understand the motive behind the blogs. The content of the blogs actually makes more sense if you assume they're legit. Wow that was like a lightbulb moment for me.

I think a lot of them confuse real human behavior everyone experiences with symptoms of mental illness. Most mental illness symptoms are normal behavior and feelings that are extreme/excessive thus requiring treatment. So to them not liking talking on the phone or don't liking loud noises/being in a crowd = autism. Being a moody teenager/jealous = BDP. Being organized = OCD.

I've seen posts talking about their "intrusive thoughs" in regards to their OCD and these intrusive thoughs were like "I'm watching tv and my brain will be like EAT TV #actuallyocd" when in reality OCD gives you horrible intrusive thoughs that your loved ones will die or get hurt if you don't do X or think of something in a certain way. I have a loved one/person close to me that has OCD and they suffer a lot from it. They won't touch or own anything of the color purple and will repeat tasks like closing their closet's door multiple times and many other things that make living with this coundition exhausting.

I actually have some long time/ really good friends who have diagnosed BPD and from what theyve said, that shit is something you don't want to have. They never use their condition as an excuse for shitty behavior, in fact they really try to be on their best behavior because they want to prove all these Tumblrinas who think it can't be helped wrong. Just using BPD so loosely really cheapens the distressed people with actual BPD feel, which is fucked up.

the fact that tumblr views "neurotypicals" as Bad and thinks "neurotypicals" never have problems doesn't help with this. you can have issues without meeting the criteria to be diagnosed with a mental illness. i wish you could talk about your struggles without people trying to diagnose you. like sure, that person probably doesn't have ocd, but if their brain is constantly telling them to eat the TV to the point where it interferes with their life, that's an issue.

They did it to show how funny they though it was. I think most of them when feel some unpleasant feeling like being tired will blame their illness directly and abuse the spoon theory to show how much worse they are off than some normal neurotypical.

As someone who has mental illness, (OCD) I think it's ridiculous when people think they don't have to be nice or behave like a functioning member of society just because they're mentally ill. I don't care if you've got all the mental illnesses possible- you should be courteous to others.

yknow, with people who self diagnose with aspd i always wonder, isn't one of the traits of aspd trying to act like a normal human being and hiding the disorder? why the fuck would they broadcast it to the world on their tumblr that someone from their real life could potentially find?
it honestly feels like they're roleplaying. and i mean, they are since most of them dont even have the disorders they claim to have and are just angsty teens lol

Honestly, I find these self-diagnosing twats to be utterly infuriating. You can usually tell they are if you ask an 'actual BPD' if they're taking CBT and DBT therapy, only to have them either not know what that is or say they can't afford it. I don't know how it's done in the States, but where I am, CBT and DBT therapy is usually free. You just have to show up twice a week for a couple of weeks to sessions provided by hospital psychologists.

Granted, if those kidlets got into those programs, they might just use it to roleplay their delusions even further, so maybe it's fine they stay on tumblr and cry into the void that they have no friends because uguu mental illnessss

I have BPD and some other crap. I can say 99% of these kidlets do fuckin' not.

In the US you generally have to pay for it because our healthcare system is fucked. However, you can find free places if you are broke enough or advocate for yourself. Sometimes in patient psych wards have an outpatient transition program as well.

This makes me think that the word used to accuse people who claim they have personality disorder but actually aren't shouldn't be "faking", but rather on the lines of confusion. These people are just confused.

I'm glad it's already been said that most of these people are probably self-diagnosed. Adding "actually" to the beginning of your tag doesn't magically prove do have the disorder. Lying is easy. Typing words is easy. Anyone can do it.

I'll agree some are confused, but for the most part, a lot of them are faking. Depression is too mainstream these days. You need another hook so you can treat others like trash and BPD/NPD/ASPD seem to be the best ones to get away with it. If you flick through the tumblr tag, it becomes really obvious when they do things like try and greentext their 'intrusive thoughts' or funny life moments and its generic stuff like:

Brain: Adult!
Me: Can't :(

#actuallybpd #actuallybipolar #actuallymentallyill #actuallyaspd #actuallyneurodivergent #actuallytraumatized #relatable #my brain wont adult #does anyone else feel like this #i cried today over a cheeto #i cant adult #responsibilities are sooo hard #reblog if you cry too

Like, is this actually a person with a mental disorder (other than autism) or are they trying to be tumblr funnyman famous and tag these because it gets more hits. I honestly can't tell anymore.
