I've heard that the wingmen and enemies have better AI in the DLC missions for 7 but I haven't noticed anything that significant, they certainly aren't doing much to help reach the score target in Anchorhead Raid.
They seemed about as useless in the DLC as they did in the base game to me.

From my expeirence the AC5 AI seems still to be the "best" out there. I mean what does the AI actually do in AC7? I have never seen them shoot down a plane or blow up a tank as those tasks usually seem to be handed to the player only (though I swear I see the point ticker tick upwards in the "Achieve X points in x minutes" missions even when I didn't do anything)
After testing that in AC5, I still have a little bit of an itch to go back and check every mission instead of just the first few and actually document the extent your wingmen actually help you and when exactly their A.I. turns off. Fundamentally useless data for a 20 year old game, but think it'd be neat nonetheless.
I want a plane in real life that can shoot more than two missiles, like in the game. I want a plane where you legit get 500 missiles. Imagine how much that would rule to hijack one of those and just go town on various small villages in India.

Playing through Anchorhead Raid, it seems like NPC allies' missiles do less damage to enemies than players'. 3-4 NPC missiles are equivalent to 2 missiles' worth of damage from the player on regular enemies (i.e non-stealth fighters).

I wonder, whether they're going to retconn the Strangereal's history and forget about AC3.
I wonder, whether they're going to make a sequel to AC3.

Man, I just want them to remake AC3 with a modern engine and a real English language port

As for a retcon/sequel, I think a retcon is a given, seeing as how close the the modern games are getting to it in the timeline. Back in 1999, the idea of a future where the world is divided into private corporations warring with each other was much more in line with the End of History bullshit zeitgeist, so a story about the world 40 years in the future featuring that made a lot more sense. The games to varying extents have consistently been shaped by pop anti-militarism and anxiety about war at the time they were made. AC3 had the megacorps, AC5 had the shadow governments, AC7 had the drones and AI replacing and surpassing humans, etc.

They wrote themselves into a bit of a corner by going all-in on drones, that it'll be strange if they have a much-reduced presence in AC8. Probably could wave it away with some sort of explanation like a "Post-Lighthouse War ban on advanced drones and IFF interference" akin to the Washington Naval Treaty.

Mimic squadron remains a bit of an unresolved plot point, since they were General Resource mercenaries, but it's clear they're gradually trying to bridge the gap between 'modern' Strangereal and AC3's intercorporate war.

What would be exciting to see is Chinese aircraft finally showing up after all their lobbying efforts "gifts" to Kono and PA in the period since AC7. It would help pad out the aircraft roster with new aircraft like the FC-31 for carriers, as well as older indigenous Chinese designs like the J-10. Maybe even those recent experimental aircraft as Sotoa's hidden aces up their sleeve.

I wonder if we should have a mod rename this thread to Ace Combat /gen/ or something like that so it's clear it's a discussion about Project Aces and the whole series and particularly about AC8 coming out next year. Or if it'd make sense to make a new Ace Combat Series thread.

It would be pretty neat to see, but with how uppity Japan's nationalists have been over the past few months, I wouldn't put it past the PLAAF to revoke PA's license to use their aircraft at the last minute as a soft power move. Assuming they're going to be used in the first place.

I think they are almost certainly going to produce a re-imagined Electrosphere in Ace Combat 9. 7 laid the ground, 8 is in the right bit of the world and there are multiple hints towards General Resources being involved in whatever is going on, Osea is weak after the Lighthouse War so their hegemony is there to be challenged. The only mystery now is what involvement the sneaky and dastardly Belk*ns have. We need a final solution to that question.

What a time to be alive, I'm so happy bros.

>Excellent. With Sudentor secured, we have significantly advanced the cause of Belkan restoration.
<Huh...? I thought I trained you to kill Abyssal Dision?
>Silence clown. Now load up the requested Ultra-HIV-3 UGBs for Operation Summer Camp.
<Uh Nemo, what are you going to do with those?
>Hoffnug total production efficiency has decreased by 0.03% due to homosexual activity. This must be addressed.

Operation Cannibal best day of my life. A THOUSAND MORE HOFFNUNGS WOULD BE TOO MERCIFUL A FATE FOR BELKA.

Another Project Aces interview has taken place with Korean and Chinese (Taiwan) gaming sites. No helicopter or gunship segments. We will not be seeing new aircraft from Asia, "per license holder decision" for Korea and China respectively - which could mean they've said no or they just haven't responded at all.

Ko is Kono, Google translate messed up.

edit:
Also, despite the trailers showing off the Super Hornet, it won't be the starting aircraft of the game. The interviewers noted that it was strange to have modern jets on a vintage carrier, which PA acknowledged and responded that your starter aircraft will be different.

Legacy Hornets and Phantoms are definitely in without a doubt, but the door is open on what other carrier aircraft will return as playable or make a debut. Sea Harriers? Etendards? The oldest that's been playable is the A-4 Skyhawk, but that was a one-off in AC2.

I asked the jannies and @Trombonista kindly changed the title.

Speculation on what the new superweapon and/or super fighter will be? It is inevitable.

The Sotoans will flood the internet with Hindian counter-signaling to make it look like public opinion is against the Wings of Theeve, and the FCU will sideline you on due to command being convinced you are "cringe and gay." They call it the Izzat Bomb, and it's part of their larger Brown Tide social weapons program.

Another superweapon originally built to target Ulysses. As for the wunderwaffe plane, my money's on it having some sort of directed energy weapon or being a drone carrier like Nosferatu, or even the Nosferatu itself after AC7 brought back the Wyvern. I could see the cash-strapped Stovies licensing out the design, since we've seen the Alicorn go from being a Yuktobanian sub to one bought by Erusea.

In the Wyvern's case, it didn't have a prominent enemy character flying it until AC7, which opens the door for another potential returnee, the ASF-X Shinden from Assault Horizon. It's only shown up as a DLC plane and has no connections to a particular Strangereal nation otherwise.

Notably, all three planes are also carrier aircraft so there's a good chance they return in AC8 as DLC or bonus unlockables, if not in the story, but I might just be limiting myself by focusing on carrier jets since it's expected that we won't be on the carrier for all of the game.

edit:
New interview with GameSpot was published.
Kono mentions that with the extended focus on clouds, they're going to play more of a gameplay role than they did in 7 where it was just a neat trick to dodge missiles or a one-off gimmick like with lightning.

There may be sequences in the game where you'll have to follow an enemy jet's wingtip vortices through the clouds to hunt it down (4:03) and clouds are going to present an obstacle where you decide whether to fly through it or go around it (presumably exposing yourself).

Given that we're back on Usea, I'd have to imagine that the Wyvern (either in its original single-seat configuration or in the two-seat configuration shown in AC7) will show up. Though, rather than the Nosferatu or Shinden, I'd rather they stick with Usean-developed legacy super aircraft and give us the XFA-27 as a call-back super plane. Like the other mentioned aircraft, it's also carrier capable too. Let's just hope that whatever the new super plane is, they don't make it unplayable until a post-release DLC like they did with 7.
