Is that the excuse?
Not that foreigners wouldn't get it ala Dai Gyakuten Saiban and the quiz portion of AA5?

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is out now! I'm really enjoying it, but I'm still getting thrown for a loop by "Herlock Sholmes". Bloody Arthur Conan Doyle estate, how can it not be public domain by now?

Maybe its like Mickey Mouse, you can use the old one from the black and white shorts but you cant use the name

I've been pushing through the series and loving every minute of it.
Played through the first trilogy last year, just finished Apollo Justice, and am currently working on Investigations and Layton.
Favorite game is probably Trials and Tribulations so far

Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice will be unavailable on 3ds in the west after stores close as an fyi

Necroing, but the current final three games of the mainline series are getting ported to the Switch.
I get why they're doing it considering the circumstances of DD, and SoJ, but god I'm pissed it's not a port of the Investigations games.

Correction: Game, as in singular

Investigations 2 is never getting a proper translation, so people are stuck with the fan-made one to patch to the rom for emulators. Capcom is treating that one like the red-headed stepchild for whatever asinine reason
Forgive me, when I said "port", I meant "bundle" like what they did with the GAA.

As for Investigations 2, I have no idea why they hate it so much considering it's arguably the best game in the series. It certainly has the best overall plot, and villain.

Honestly, you may give me rainbows for this but I still don't think it's out of the question that they could one day release an edgeworth bundle with an officially localised AAI2. TGAA sets a precedent that they could do it even knowing there's a popular fan translation and unlike with nintendo and mother 3 it's not like they have a bunch of cultural landmines to dodge to keep their family friendly image.

Oh, I agree that it's definitely not out of the question, and the more I think about it, the more I'm almost certain it's going to be next one out.

Considering the Apollo port was allegedly supposed to come out in 2021, but only didn't because of Covid, and other stuff at the company pushing back the release date, I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened to the AAI bundle.

Except this is nu-Capcom, and their localization team recently put out a memo regarding how they do things now

Localization and culturalization

Capcom games are enjoyed worldwide. In the fiscal year ended March 2022, the percentage of home video games sold overseas was 83.1%. Naturally, translation (localization) of video games developed in Japanese is required so that game players around the world can enjoy them. The volume and importance of localization is increasing year after year due to factors such as improvements in game machine performance, support for online gameplay, and an increase in the number of languages accompanying a more diversified, global audience. As such, Capcom’s localization team is involved in game development from the initial stages.

By carrying out localization concurrently with development, rather than following completion of the Japanese language version as had been done in the past, Capcom is able to launch games simultaneously around the globe. What is more, depending on the country, simply translating games developed under Japanese norms can end up hurting users unexpectedly due to historical, religious, or cultural differences.

As such, we focus on employing staff from around the world to culturize the games so that they can be enjoyed by all, regardless of locale.
This was released regarding Street Fighter 6 and it's questionable western dialogue for the NPC's, but I wouldn't put it past them to pull the same shit with this series. This is the same company that was scared shitless of using the name "Sherlock Holmes"

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, featuring 2 games called Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
Let's be real... Phoenix Wright is a side character in his own 3DS games. The fact that they retconned Apollo's backstory TWICE and made him the center of attention made that apparent. Even after the build-up to the Phoenix/Maya reunion, it didn't really amount to anything.

Dual Destinies also had the big build-up for Athena Cykes, and then did nothing with her for except for one case in Spirits of justice.

Nah, Phoenix is the primary protagonist of both. Apollo was more a side character in them. His best friend is a fucking PNG that gets introduced by dying, and it's all a lazy copout to somehow involve him in the main plot about Athena. SoJ is almost entirely about Phoenix's adventure in Fo-Reyn Shiethohl, and Apollo is used as a way to spitshine Dhurke's knob while further pushing that fucking abomination of a plotline. The one case that throws a bone to the AJ storylines, 6-2, is a lazy wet fart of a case that's pathetically short. It was clearly an afterthought next to all the Khurain shit.

Apollo was only ever used in the 3DS games as a prop in the actual plotlines of the games. That doesn't mean Phoenix was used well, he's basically a zombie version of himself that never has any development, but he's still the main guy. They weren't called "Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney" for nothing. Pretty sure if you count the number of cases they each star in in DD and SoJ, he shitstomps Apollo.

IIRC, the reason Apollo's character is such a hot mess is because the higher-ups at Capcom wanted Phoenix to still play a big role in the series, so they had to rewrite everything in the game that introduced him at the last minute which is why the entire plot of the fourth game makes no goddamn sense, why everyone feels so OOC, and why things with the final villain are left unexplained/unfinished.

Because of all this, they had to scrap their original plans for him in later games which is why they didn't know what to with him, and essentially just wrote him out of the series at the end of SoJ.

I have no idea why they hate Athena, though. She has more going for her than Apollo ever did, and for them to just keep giving her the shaft makes no sense.

But even with all that, there is nothing in AAI2 that falls under those categories so saying they wouldn't localize the game because of this is nonsense.

Also, it's not that they were scared shitless of using the name "Sherlock Holmes". It was because it was actually still copyrighted because the Doyle Estate are litigious fuckheads so they genuinely couldn't use in the localizations.
