It's possible that they tried and it just didn't ever stick, so they gave up once Abby legally became an adult. There is a limit to what parenting can do with the raw materials of some kids. After a certain point the parents have to choose to either fight all the time about something that won't change m, or try to have a more pleasant relationship and accept the limitations of their role.

you make a good point, but what about the fact that they basically fund all the phase switching? her niche merch isn't cheap. to me that's some pretty straightforward enabling.

They probably still view Abby as a teenager, I mean she acts like one and she is their “baby.”

I would bet it played out like this: they tried to crack the whip a bit when she was a teenager. I bet Abby ran away and acted out a lot as a result. They took her to psychiatrists who diagnosed her with bi-polar, ADD, etc... so now she has an “illness” and they need to support her. She hits 18 and they worry if they pressure her too much she’ll run off and be a scum punk or hooker.

So they just resign themselves to putting up with her batshit nonsense because they fear losing her altogether if they don’t. She is their only child, they both seem to be retired, so they focus and invest too much of their time and energy into her and her drama/problems/antics.

They could be clueless rich people who would over spend on anything their kid wanted, but you're probably right. They might be bad parents. I just try not to judge too hard, especially with adoptions since you never know what kind of kid you're going to get.

But seriously, how long until enough is enough? She’s 24 goddamn years old. Most parents would expect their kids to be out of the house and out of their hair by then, not still living at home rent free without a job. And she even gets an allowance from them, right? They’re basically just encouraging this arrested development of hers. Are they really still going to indulge her 10 years from now? There’s gotta be a limit to their tolerance.

Idk there could be a real nasty case of codependency going on with one or both parents and Abbey. I’ve seen parents get completely addicted to the drama of their grown-ass trainwreck of a child. The parent’s life revolves around rescuing them, enabling and/or saving them from themselves and I have a feeling that’s what’s going on with Abbey and her folks. (Abbey would be oblivious to it.

A bipolar narcissist child and a codependent parent is guaranteed disaster.
 
Man she still looks like a 30 year old truckdriving dude. Her hambeast boyfriend still looks like Meatloaf circa Rocky Horror. That picture of her dad and her at golf i swear his eyes are begging for someone to not yell "fore" and kill him with a titlest to the head. To alog just a little i lived next to an old couple that couldnt have kids so they adopted their drug addled daughters son when she went to jail. They were well off and it seemed no matter what he did they supported him. People stole his brand new ps3 and he didnt care. He stole their new car at his moms beheadst and they didnt lock him down. I asked the old man about that after the kid was runnin down the street and he just said the kid had issues. So i think you guys have the right of it. They keep hoping shell "grow out of it"

So first she was Jack and now she’s Sally? Interesting. Wonder if she’ll do all of Tim Burton’s well known characters. Maybe Corpse Bride next? I can definitely see her having an Alice in Wonderland phase (if she hasn’t had one already).
