ABBA have announced they are set to release new music for the first time in 35 years.

Posting a statement on the official ABBA Instagram account, the band wrote: “The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence.

“We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio. So we did. And it was like time had stood still and that we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyful experience!”

The statement continued: “It resulted in two new songs and one of them ‘I Still Have Faith In You’ will be performed by our digital selves in a TV special produced by NBC and the BBC aimed for broadcasting in December.

“We may have come of age, but the song is new. And it feels good.”

It signed off: “Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn, Anni-Frid - Stockholm, Sweden, 27 April 2018.”

The group’s manager Gorel Hanser also confirmed the news in a press release.

During a speech in Brussels on 25 April, singer Bjorn Ulvaeus, 72, revealed that virtual “Abbatars” are being created to represent the four members of the pop group of the upcoming digital tour, expected for 2019 or 2020.

They will be pictured as they looked during the height of their fame, with Ulvaeus saying: “We thought we looked good that year.”

“They photographed us from all possible angles, they made us grimace in front of cameras, they painted dots on our faces, they measured our heads,” he told broadcasting executives last week.

“Apparently a cranium doesn’t change with age the way the rest of your body falls apart.”

ABBA have sold more than 400 million albums in their careers and have had nine No 1 hits in the UK between 1974 and 1980. Yet they have not performed since 1986, other than a brief appearance at a private party in 2016.

They've previously refused a reunion offer to the tune of $1 billion, so this is pretty huge. Not as huge as Pyeongyang and Seoul making peace, but still.

Hopefully the Classic Rock Bands don't get any ideas from this. The last thing we need is a Beatles Showing featuring Real Paul and Ringo and fake John and George

All this to cover for a member's agoraphobia?

"planning hologram shows"

Man Miku isn't gonna be happy with people moving in on her turf.

There's enough bands and singing groups full of scabs milking every last cent as it is. Do The Temptations still do this?

Now, if they could only create a hologram to replace their non-existent talent.

I don't get their appeal. But apparently a lot of people do. I only know Dancing Queen. I couldn't name a single other song. But they were big before my time and I never got into that kind of music.

Since they're all very old now I guess a digital tour is easier on those bones. There are so many oldsters who should hang it up already. Paul Stanley's been croaking out lyrics for years now.

I'm surprised that Gene Simmons hasn't thought of this first.

Gene Simmons is currently organizing a KISS tour that'll feature younger guys in makeup lipsyhncing to live versions of Kiss Hits.

I guess it was only their careers that died.

I expect something similar to this happening.
