Not sure where to ask this so I"ll put it in the designated shitting ground that is Q&A

I decided to become a filthy race mixer by using a controller on PC don't judge me it's easier on my fucked up nerves and tendons fuck you and I went with some shitty MSI xbox knockoff to test the waters before considering buying a proper xbox controller. I noticed the the joysticks or what ever zoomers call them now only start to register movement when its pushed halfway to its stopping point giving me little room for aiming sensitivity ramp up. Is this how most controllers are or did I just get a lemon by being a cheap fuck?

It shouldnt have a dead zone, but just don't pilot a submarine with one an you'll be fine.

I don't game either, but I have a friend who uses a modern wired xbox controller as a LinuxCNC pendant and it's shockingly comfy to use in comparison to other pendants I've used and it really responsive, (that might be his config though) only cost him £20, I just looked at Amazon UK and the wireless ones about double that.

That's the dead zone, it exists to prevent the controller from falsely registering inputs because the physical input device can't be engineered to perfectly return to exactly the same neutral position every single time with no margin for error. The dead zone on your controller is too big because that margin for error is too big because it's poorly engineered/quality controlled because it's a cheap piece of shit. A better controller will be better engineered with better quality control, tighter tolerance, thus a tighter margin for error; the thumbstick will actually reliably return to the neutral position it's supposed to, and the dead zone won't have to be so big to compensate.

Basically you jewed yourself by being a jew and wasted money on trash trying to save money. Buy once cry once, get something you can depend on.

They're called analog sticks, and they're not supposed to have a noticeable dead zone,

I think my settings aren't helping either. It looks like steam had a significant deadzone set in the controller settings

Also thanks for the help guys. I'm turning into a tech illiterate boomer

Why is it bad to use a controller on games? That's how I thought you were supposed to play Souls games. Or Smash Melee. Those are both milleniGOD games.

The xbox pro controllers are pretty expensive but are really good and last a long time. I've had mine for like 3 years
What about the regular xbox one controllers? I'm a poorfag so I can't afford the top tier stuff

I was thinking going the regular xbox controller route with their annoying proprietary USB to give me wireless for my pc

A fucking controller.. of course.. as expected from a nigger,

My brother uses the steam logitech controller for gaming on his PC but regular xbox series X/S controllers are pretty ergonomic and worth the money I think

buy a DualSense (PS5) controller, there's no comparison. the XBOX PRO ELITE 420 GAMER EDITION is dog shit. none of the off-brand controllers are worth a shit. previously the DS4 was the controller to beat, the DualSense is even better and has the analog sticks in an actually comfortable position for a change. Steam Input has supported DualSense controllers for years now, Windows supports it through xinput and Linux has a kernel module for it (long since included in the default drivers). it has great build quality, great battery life, great polling rate and accuracy. $70 is a little pricey but you won't get anything better even at twice the price and up. I say this as somebody who hasn't owned a home console since the PS3; I use my controllers strictly for PC gaming.

Personally I'd recommend a good quality X360 ersatz, something like this. Native support for Winblows and Schteam, too. Used one to beat MGRR several years back, then Yakuza 0 a last week. Never ever go wireless, by the way.

Just buy an official Xbox controller, the newest ones have a capture button in the middle, between and a little under Start & Select. Or a PlayStation Dualshock 4, or a Dualsense, depending on your preferences. It really doesn't matter.

What does matter is cheaping out and getting some janky third party controller. They always cut every corner they can. The ones made by console manufacturers have reputations to uphold, so they tend to be the best ones.

Return that el cheapo controller if you still can.
