I think the effort looks cool, but I have to admit the entire thing is an aesthetic mess, Ubisoft really knew how to sell the original promotional pics, the entire thing just looks like that they shoved cartoony characters in Shadow of Colossus/Twilight Princess scenarios and Halo facilities.
 
I really need to play Klonoa and Super Meat Boy some day, I already know I'll love both.

Haven't seen Tomba 2 mentioned, that was a great 2.5D title on PS1. It's the one that CavemanDCJ was playing when Chibi sat beside her at GDQ.

Ape Escape, Crash and Spyro were masterpieces, essential PS1 games. It's gotta be Jak, Sly and Ratchet on PS2. I like the idea of calling Uncharted a platformer lmao but I resent how that generation veered so far from platforming, instead toward realistic spectacle shooty type games everywhere. The trend of games taking control away from the player frequently and for long stretches took off hard, giving us elaborate animation sequences and QTEs instead.

Movement is such a crucial aspect of a game and platformers are the ones that really make the most of it IMO. And racing games in some respect.

Hat in Time and Mario Odyssey were the last 2 games to really blow me away with how fun it was to just move.
 
You know, I don't think the dev(s) thought the title through. 4D implies you can feel/smell/etc... what is happening to you in real time, and AFAIK you can't do that here.

Seriously, have these people never been to a 4D movie theater?

Klonoa is very good, Meat Boy is very bad.

Ape Escape definitely was, the others didn't age well. Tail Concerto looks good but I haven't tried it yet.
 
Crash 1 certainly aged bad but the rest are still great I think, still very fun to play. Visually they kind of need a CRT to hide the rough edges though.
I never played the rest, maybe they hold up better.
 
Meat Boy is very bad.
Apologies for glancing over this point originally, but Meat Boy is bad? Granted I've still not played it, but I've only ever heard universal glazing across the board for it, back when sell-outs weren't as ubiquitous and the idea of "indie gaming" was still novel. Is it just a case of groundbreaking then, dated now?

I'd say the novelty played a part in it if it wasn't for the fact people jack off trash like Celeste too, so there's really just no accounting for taste. Meat Boy is just one of those "die a million times and instantly respawn until you get it" games. It's gross looking and repetitive. It's a subgenre of platformers that just doesn't click with me.

Though it has this stupid fad of having things that are horrible some stages in. I fucking hate how many games do the whole "Quirky chungus becomes gorey chungus" trope. I fucking hate it. But other than that it's not bad.

I wouldn't say Crash 1 aged badly. The difficulty was just a little bit too much when it came for getting all the gems, but other than that it was a really good launch title for the PS1

Depends what exactly we mean by dated, I think it's dated because Crash 2 and 3 are such a big jump in quality from it, yet not too different from eachother save for the excessive vehicle levels in 3. There's also the way you need to repeat a level and beat a bonus stage in order to save, and the way all the boxes respawn upon death, even the ones behind your current checkpoint. It had teething issues that were immediately corrected in followup entries, that's what makes it dated IMO.

Edit: I just remembered how you were given a password also when saving in case you didn't have a memory card yet. That was a great idea, one every game should have endeavoured to keep doing, assuming the save data was simple enough to express as a string, though there was probably a lot more money to be made in memory cards.

The only thing I am getting out of this is that the game was "dated" because of it's diffficulty. Yes, the sequels did streamline it a bit with a lot of freebies if you fail (new checkpoints, spawning with a mask, only requiring to do no-death to get to the secret platform), but if you had to ask me I think it made for a more rewarding experience; you had to be exceedingly good at it to 100% complete it.

The only thing I could say about Crash 1 is that it was a very obtuse game. You're never told how to get the keys, how to get the coloured gems which you need to complete many stages, or if failing the bonus stages damage your box count at the end of each level. You can make the argument that you had to discover "how it worked", but I'd rather just search where each of these gems/keys are. Other than that it's a really great game.
 
Choose one. It's a fine platformer, but there is a good difference between the game being mechanically bad, and the game not being of your interest.

Seriously though, it's a functional game. Beyond that everything is technically subjective.
