Absolum demo is out. I kinda like it, but it's ugly as sin, the roguelike Power ups are uncreative elemental effects and the setting is incredibly boring, like, there isn't one single COOL thing in this game... It's wild. That it's pretty pozzed and greets you with a gay ol' salute from the EU doesn't make it more likeable. Oh, and the movesets are gutted SOR4 leftovers.

This could have been my dreamgame, but i am afraid it is slop. The sloppiest of slop. The sloppest.
 
NES games were a pain in the ass. To get what the consumer would consider their money's worth of playtime out of them, the developers didn't have much choice but to make the games punishingly difficult. Somehow, we seem to have gone in the opposite direction these days, where most games seem too easy to beat.
Nintendo of America hurt their own credibility in the '80s by taking already psychotically hard Japanese games and "localizing" them for American audiences by adding more enemies, longer levels, and increased damage. High Score on Netflix (and a few other sources) claimed the real reason was to make kids call the hint line.

Rentals were not legal in Japan but it was legal in the US and Europe and they were very worried about that, that's a big part of it in my opinion. I don't know how widespread it was but Nintendo tried to shut down renting video games through legal action back when I grew up.

On the one hand, it looks like a Netflix adaptation of a webcomic written by a rainbow snowflake otherkin. otoh, it's going to play way better than anything else, and tbh the competition is really thin. It's just easier to get hyped about Toxic Crusaders.

NoA prevented SMB2j from coming out in the west because it was too hard for gaijin. The western versions of SMB3 and SMW are both easier than the Japanese ones. Dunno if they ever increased difficulty for international releases, but they didn't make a habit of it. afaik they didn't meddle with the difficulty of 3rd party games.

Of the three NES Double Dragon games, DD2 is the only one that had its difficulty changed in localization, and Technos actually made the US version easier.

tbh I'd written the supposed hint line scam thing off as BS. If any of those sources is an actual dev who worked on a NES game, that would be really interesting to me. 99% of the time it's just people repeating "common knowledge" from other people repeating "common knowledge". Hard to picture a kid calling a hint line for Double Dragon anyway. What's the guy on the line gonna say, "git gud"?

Rolento and Haggar looks pretty cool. They look like they're from a Billy Herrington video but that's just how old muscle man vidya looks.
 
The stage music from Bad Dudes sounds suspiciously like the Theme from Miami Vice.

One of the sound programmers for the Famicom port was Shogo Sakai, who would go on to do the soundtrack for MOTHER3.
