2D Beat 'em ups - From Double Dragon to River City, from Final Fight to Streets of Rage, from Golden Axe to Castle Crashers, from Shadows Over Mystara to Dragon's Crown, from fan-made to official.

It came out today, looks better than Karate Kid and G.I. Joe games, but without spoiling too much, the game is basically 2/3 Beat 'em Up and 1/3 Rail Shooter, there is also 3 Boss fights that use the First Person mode, something to be wary of before diving head first into it.
Edit: Verdict: Despite looking better than most of the slop released year, it still pales in comparison to Shredder's Revenge, the Beat 'em up segments aren't fleshed out enough and characters basically play the same, pass or wait for a very good sale.
I'm on Troma's spam list and at some point they quietly stopped mentioning this.
There's some BTS drama going on with not just the game but the Blu of the cartoon:

Mayhem Brawler 2 demo dropped a while back. Featuring: real-time shifts between Zelda-eque future/past worlds, lengthy cut scenes, roguelike stat upgrades, 2-character teams, a run and a dash, scaling sprites as the player moves on the z-axis, all piled onto pretty much the same "not awful (I guess)" engine that will never be tweaked to my liking, apparently. Well, it's got some ambition at least. Or it's just compensating...

Maiden Cops is out. Momentous news for fans of half-animal-half-anime-girl jailbait character designs. I mentioned earlier in the thread that I thought the demo was ok (essentially a Streets of Rage 2 clone). If I pirated every beatemup that came out this year, I bet I would end up liking this better than any of the licensedshit like Karate Kid. I cannot be fucked to do so, however. I will proudly support the Maiden Cops devs when it's on sale for like a dollar, maybe.

Will reiterate that Jitsu Squad is the most recent thing that actually impressed me gameplay-wise but the devs appear to have abandoned it and fucked off to nowhere and taken down their website etc ages ago. Very sad, I don't think anything will match it for years. It could've done with a few more updates/modes but the engine and mechanics are quite patrician imo. Also contains direct memberberries references to Fight'n Rage, which I still hold to be the GOAT of the genre, or very nearly so.

Actually they announced a new character for that recently, exclusive for exA Arcadia:

The Phantom development is likely in trouble since they just missed a bunch of deadlines:

In other news, a new character was announced for Final Vendetta:

While addressing these technical challenges, we set the game development team to work making some enhancements such as fixing bugs and some exploits.
This is good news. imo Final Vendetta is one of the best of these from the last few years, but it's got some broken stuff in need of fixing. Wouldn't turn down another character either.

Best demo I've played in a while is Fallen City Brawl: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1717190/Fallen_City_Brawl/

It's like 90s Capcom mixed with various stuff from Streets of Rage. Not the most original theme there, and it looks kinda gross at points, but I like how it feels.

I'm gonna shill for anything where you get a different ender (or throw) for your standard combo based on holding the stick up or down. That was a pretty normal feature in the 90s, very elegant design imo, but FCB is one of the few modern indies I've seen with it. Lots of little touches like that give some confidence that the devs know what they're doing.

However the demo's two years old... getting into "development hell" territory there. I hope it comes out.
