He's not even like Shadow/Dick Tracy-tier. I didn't realize The Phantom was created in Australia, so that might make a difference.

I imagined it happening this way: they knew that a license, any license, would give their game a boost, and this is what they managed to dig up. But I dunno, maybe it's one of those deals like Asterix, Tintin etc where foreigners are actually into it.
Phantom is extremely neutral to me. I remember seeing the comic strip but having no sense of what was going on in the story. Have you seen Diana though? I do dig the art style the game has.
Personally speaking, if you want to connect with the kids you need the strip that was always next to phantom. Thats right I'm talking about Rex Morgan M.D.

I wanted to check that out, if only to complain about it. iirc it was $30 at some point which I think is more than SoR4 or TMNT:SR launched at, the nerve of it. Looks like Castle Crashers.

Strike that, having taken it for a brief test drive, Jitsu Squad is basically Alien vs Predator crossed with DMC. I died during the tutorial. I checked the developer's website, and their lists of favorite games (see below) reveal them to be gentlemen of refined taste. 90s Capcom arcade fans should not miss. I kinda feel bad for not paying for it. Now it's ok if Toxic Crusaders sucks, I think I'm covered for the foreseeable future.

DAVE BALJON
Mastermind behind the game, Jitsu Squad’s original concept, characters and story were born from the creative mind of Dave.

Favorite games:
Ninja Gaiden II, Thunderforce 4, Super Castlevania 4, Alien vs Predator
SEBASTIEN ROMERO
With both a degree in animation as well as in music composition he brings Jitsu Squad to life. He makes sure everything in the game has a nice fast pacing and rhythm to it.

Favorite games:
Street Fighter II, Cuphead, Capcom vs SNK II, Metal Slug.
PIETER VISSER
Pieter has earned his stars with his epic game Shattered Realms. Ask him to do something, and he will deliver something even better!

Favorite games:
Fight ‘n Rage, Final Fight LNS, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Devil May Cry
LAURENT ROMERO
Illustrator and comic artist who understands the art of drawing silly faces more than anything. He is also the creator of the infamous Tobudasai webcomic.

Favorite games:
Street Fighter II, The Last Blade, King of Fighters ’98
AKLI LOUNES TOUATI
Starting out as an intern, Akli proved himself to be a hard and smart worker! He is a great addition to the team and never backs away from any challenge.

Favorite games:
Devil May Cry, Super Metroid, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R
LEX VAN BOHEEMEN
Lex got over than 10 years of experience as a corporate graphic designer. He is responcible for exporting graphics and animation that bring Jitsu Squad to life!

Favorite games: Soul Calibur, The Last Blade 2, Samurai Shodown 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3

Maybe it's just me being an American, but I didn't think anybody really cared, let alone remembered who The Phantom was.
American here. I only learned of The Phantom because I rented Phantom 2040 when I was a kid and loved it.

Imagine how pissed 6 or 7 year old me was when I watched the Billy Zane movie and realized the *actual* Phantom is some 1930's pirate fighting guy.

Anyways, I've grown to appreciate the idea of The Phantom as I've become a man and that game has a really great artstyle.

Hilarious enough, it will likely release before Paprium modern ports, speaking of which:

I can go out right now and pick up the latest issue of the Phantom. It is 100 pages and the next issue is released in stores shortly before new years.

After that I will go on the internet and engage in a global slapfights about the TRUE color of his costume. There are a lot of disagreements but almost everyone agrees it's not fucking yellow.

One time a riot broke out in papa new guinea because the mailtruck didnt have the new issues of the book, it was delayed in printing.

You should also look up papa new guinea phantom shields, shields used in tribal warfare and they are adorable.

You have a point with female enemies in other games, but that doesn't mean capcom specifically didn't have issues with "violence towards women". Its possible that someone made a fuss so they just said, "fuck it, poison is a man".

I remember reading an old gaming magazine showing the difference between the Japanese and American versions of final fight. In one of the versions when poison was hit her (whatever) shirt would lift up exposing underboob. In the other version she(or not) was flat chested.
What I'm trying to say is, I really want to be right about this despite only having personal memories to go off of.

Another thing about specific rules: I was told (meaning its 100 percent correct) fei long isn't allowed in street fighter due to the Lee family not allowing it. However Marshall Law is in Tekken 8. Why just capcom and not namco?

Edit: reading this back I dont know what I was going for. I'll try to find that old magazine and look at some other sources.
The Fei Long stuff was just a rumor

Been working on a Final Fight clear on Final Burn Neo for a while. Not new to beat em ups by any stretch(I've cleared SoR 1 and 2, as well as that newer one Fight n' Rage), but Final Fight really is a beast that's hard to wrangle lol. Really fucking brutal game to clear on one credit. Those knife guys that jump and become giant hitboxes that hit for half health can really fuck right off.

I'm just here to say SoR2 is worth an emulation for its kickass OST alone.

What's happened? I've been having Streets of Rage 2 videos popping up all over my recommended feed, often about the soundtrack, for a week or two now.

It's great but I just don't know *why* I'm seeing all this Streets of Rage 2 stuff now.

I got around to playing the new Turtles beat 'em up with a friend, was some major nostalgic couch co-op. Pretty good game, expansive moveset and cast of characters, great sprite art and overall design. Honestly surprised how much i liked it.
My favourite belt-scroller of all times is Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, could feed a minor african country with the amount of quarters i put into that machine whenever i was on vacation in Italy.

Well good luck with that. Final Fight is savage even by arcade standards. Capcom actually toned it down after that.

My beast-calling brother, the ghost who walks looks pretty fucking good, gotta keep an eye on this.
The Sengoku series is pretty good, Sengoku 3 especially has good pixel art.
The game looks amazing and is an incredible step up from the previous two games, plays pretty good, too.
Alien Vs Predator is fucking excellent, probably the best Mame beat em up.
Punisher is also fucking great.
AvP blew my 10 year old mind, the sprite work, the amount of sprites on screen and fucking cyborg Schwarzenegger is too good. Love the Punisher game, too, CPS-2 times are the times i am most fond of when it comes to Capcom, next to the RE era.
I think the LJN Spiderman games on super Nintendo and genesis deserve a mention just for having the most annoying AI in a beat em up.
You talking about Maximum Carnage? Maximum fucking bullshit difficulty more like, i think "annoying" is too light of a term to describe this absolute exercise in frustration of a game. One of my all-time weekend rental regrets, seriously fuck this game.
The western market even back then was wierd about women. They would O.K. things like Street Fighter 2 (Cammy & ChunLi) but wouldn't O.K. something like this in Dynamite Headdy

Yeah for sure bro. It's definitely balanced heavily towards 2 players, and even then it's still quite cheap. But I know a lot of the tricks, and I even got so far as the final stretch on one credit but I choked and got overwhelmed. 1cc nerves are a bastard those first couple of times I get real far on a credit.

I don't feel the need to plug Capcom brawlers as excellent - my own personal favorite is the D&D games, but they're pretty much all great.

Instead, I'll toss out a couple that don't get as much love as they probably should.

The first is Ninja Baseball Bat Man. And to make the words clear, that is baseball bat wielding ninja men. By Irem. It's absolutely batshit nuts. Controls couple be a little tighter, but it's still a very solid game with wonderful 90s-era pixel artwork.

The second is Lightbringer, also known as Dungeon Magic depending on what region you're in, by Taito. I hesitated at first to include it here, because the presentation is slightly atypical for a brawler, in that it's an isometric brawler. I'm not going to lie: This is, on occasion, as janky as it sounds. But it's still a good game. It's a bit like Diablo by way of the Capcom D&D brawlers with a hint of Landstalker thrown in for goood measure.

And heck, as long as I'm here... Here's my hot take: The Simpsons arcade game isn't very good. Don't get me wrong... I played the shit out of it, it's always going to have a place in my heart, and the production values as far as graphics and such are good. But the actual gameplay is really not all that great. It's just "fine". It's not "bad", but if it wasn't for the Simpsons IP, it would be completely forgettable.

Reminds me a bit of the stuff you'd see back in the old XBOX Live Indie Games days. Like The Dishwasher. Has that sort of "feel" to it, if that makes sense. Not too bad.
Think this is the dev's Art Station, seems he's been around for a bit working as a 3D artist. He's apparently been working on the models for the game for a while. Here's one from 2020 that I like:

Konami's licensed arcade games like Simpsons and X-Men were low effort compared to stuff like Vendetta and Metamorphic Force.
