They're overhyped because the public has a misconception that being faster than a missile from a defending system makes it unable to intercept you. This is no more true than Paul Walker being unable to be intercepted by a tree.

It was produced, over cost so they only made one complete one, and then the peace dividend and end of the Gulf War made intercepting TEL SRBMs and the like irrelevant. IIRC they wanted 10-20 initially, it became an asset used more for testing of laser technology than an actual asset iirc similar to the 707 they made in the 60s to test the concept of using a plane mounted laser to intercept cruise missiles.
They fly at a far lower altitude and are maneuverable in flight for evasive procedures unlike a ballistic missile.
Massively over hyped. The hypersonics that exist are ballistic or indirect targeted rockets. The hypersonics people keep dreaming and memeing about are theoretical high speed, direct fired, highly manoeuvrable guided missiles. They both get grouped under the same umbrella, but they are fundamentally different in operation. None of the latter have been deployed in any theatre.
It depends on the final trajectory, not the speed.
