Let's start with the fact that they're actually happening in 2021, for reasons you can probably guess.
In the months running up to the opening, there has been a spate of people resigning or being fired after doing or saying not-so-nice things, either contemporarily or in their past, including two this week alone:
The Games are incredibly unpopular among the Japanese public; a recent poll (a) has shown two-thirds of Japanese people do not think Japan is currently capable of hosting the Games safely, and three-fourths agree with the decision to ban spectators from events. The Games are unpopular enough that companies like Toyota and Bridgestone have pulled their advertising (a) from Japanese television coverage.
But at least that story about the cardboard anti-sex beds turned out to be bullshit - an article based off of a tweet (or, as I will call them henceforth, a twaticle) which turned out to be a joke and had no further research done.
Well, now the Games are underway. It can't get any worse, right?
