At least 18 are dead after a series of explosions and shootings. There have been at least 4 separate, but coordinated incidents.

CNN live stream:

CNN also just announced that there are also 60 hostages being held in a theater.

Update: More than 128 dead. We got a new rating. Basically, everything went fucky.

Hearing now that that the first attacker was both a french national (yay liberals) but snuck back into the country with refugees (yay conservatives.)

So basically this will result in the same old never ending circle jerk of politicization.

Reading some of the tweets, etc. that have been posted post-attack has proven once again just how low some will stoop to score points for their 'side.' One of the more reprehensible attempts involved people drudging up an old tweet Trump posted after the Charlie Hebdo attacks earlier this year and making it seem as if it was posted after Friday's tragedy. It's proof once again of the nature of the society in which we live. Social media has created the means by which to manipulate public opinion very easily.

Don't get me wrong. Trump's a dick - and his comment was ridiculous in its original context - but this situation shows just how difficult it can be to get accurate information, even as we live in such an 'information overloaded' society.

Graphic photo taken inside Bataclan. Lots of dead bodies, blood etc.

That's pretty horrific. It's all just pointless carnage that will inevitably lead to more pointless carnage. I've always wondered how dumb you have to be to be convinced by someone to strap bombs to yourself and blow yourself up.

Images like this hopefully will make France and other countries consider deporting middle eastern refugees back to whatever garbage place they came from. Let these shitty acts of terrorism ruin it for everyone else.

Am I the only one who thinks that changing your fb icon to the French flag is an empty gesture? It's not going to bring those people back. :(

Holy shit I love logging into facebook and seeing all the slactivists making their profile pic french flags. Wow great job faggots you really showed those terrorists what's up by doing that.

"My thoughts and prayers" is perhaps the weakest version of empty gestures. I haven't messaged anyone about it nor really spoke about it. My friend who emigrated here from Saint-Pierre write the french version of thoughts and prayers. He is unsure if anyone he knows was affected but a lot of people have been tightlipped.

Seemed pretty easy for you.

Sure, people usually won't question the news when it's reinforcing what they already believe in, but figuring out the truth (or in the very least reserving one's judgement) is easy.

Neither is people giving their condolences in this thread or posting their reaction to it. Us talking won't make Chris unshit his pants and do something or unpierce his anus, yet we discuss these things. It's easy to go all "Ugh, Facebook slacktivism !" at these statuses, but I prefer to seeing a show of support for the victims than people saying the french had it coming or shitty conspiracy theories on how Obemme and the moon people are responsible for it.

Yeah, it can be a little overbearing at times, but I don't see anything negative in it.

I prefer seeing both.

After 9/11, a French journalist made the statement "Today, we are all American," which quickly caught on with the French people. It's pretty heartwarming to hear people say "Today, we are all French" (or that statement in French itself). As horrific and senseless as terrorist attacks are, there's something very touching about the solidarity that's expressed afterwards.

It's also a little bit of a circle jerk because no one cared when that Russian airliner was blown up about two weeks ago.

Changing your FB icon isn't slacktivism, though. It's simply showing support and solidarity for and with the French people in a time of crisis. Yes, it doesn't bring people back or change the situation, but there is comfort to be gained in getting and giving condolences.

Eastern Europe is a transit zone. They don't want to be there. Most of the refugees that went through it were very muscled young men, actual families are around 10% of the migrating people. I saw that with my own eyes, and you don't want to know how they eyed the local women.

Germany and Sweden had trouble recently too. Rape in Germany, and a priest was almost beheaded in Sweden.

Please, if you don't live in Europe and see things with your eyes, don't make any binding statements, for you only have second hand information that your media has filtered for you. I'm sorry if I offended you.

My deepest condolescences to all those affected by the cowardly attack in Paris.

You can't force liberal secularism on a people who are so deeply culturally opposed to it, it just won't work. It is you who are a little bit too optimistic.
AN/ALR defended eastern european countries barring their borders by saying they didn't suffer an attack. I was merely pointing out that Germany, Sweden and Austria didn't suffer an attack lately either, despite having an open border.
Funfact: I live in Central Europe.
I stand corrected, one "refugee" was amongst the attackers. Point still stands, this attack wasn't the consequence of refugees entering Europe, after all 7 out of 8 Attackers were living in Europe for a long time. Trying to blame this on refugees as a whole is pointless. I never commented on the likeliness of ISIS people amongst the attackers, but this attack isn't refugees suddenly taking up arms.
Also I don't understand what relevance austrians buying guns is supposed to have. It indicates people are afraid, but by that reasoning "Inna woods" fags in the USA indicate that FEMA is about to herd people into camps.
Kemal Ataturk did it.
And Erdogan is undoing it. :heart-empty:
Almost all of Europe is in a defence pact and I think that the Americans have them with, in-addition to Europe: Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.
An attack on South Korean or Japanese soil is equal to an attack on US soil. (Ok, Norks shelling some border regions now and then doesn't count). Part of the reason why Japan got away without a propper military (well, technically, at least) is their pact with the USA.

While driving home yesterday night, I saw the municipal hall in my city was illuminated in the french flag's colors. It's a gesture that can't bring back the victims, but it's a strong sign of unity and acts as kind of a memorial to those who live in other countries. It builds a strong sentiment of international support, so while the gesture obviously isn't going to change anything about the attacks, it at least is a clear sign of support.

Exactly. We're showing our support and solidarity for the French so they know they're not alone. If something terrible happened to you, wouldn't it be nice to hear people say "What happened to you is completely unacceptable. We'll stand by and support you no matter what"?

There's unfortunately very little most of us can actually do in situations like this, but we can at least offer emotional support.
