They've done this, I think, to test the water. People have been going on for ages about either a black bond or a female bond so, why not both? They'll have this chick be in the film for ten, fifteen minutes tops. She'll probably make some quips, hit on a man (or woman, cause woke) and maybe kill some bad guys and audience reaction to her will decide whether they take the route of female black bond or just another dude. Then if people hate her, they'll just reboot for the next film and thus not have to acknowledge her at all. It's almost clever on their part but honestly, I cant see bond ever changing from what it is. The movies have always gone with the times but at its core, bonds always been bond. Just look at the changes and similarities between the 60s/70s/80s and modern day. All adapted to the times whilst keeping pretty much what makes James Bond, Bond. Just my two cents, but yeah - I don't think this is worth dwelling on.

Okay. Now it's clear to me why they're doing this. If they establish as canon the autistic fan theory that 007 is a designation reserved for great spies (instead of being a single person, James Bond, played by different actors), they can make Woke Bond spinoffs without endangering the core franchise.

Nvm just answered my own question - James Bond entered the public domain back in '15. It means that it's no longer copyrighted, just like Sherlock Holmes. And that's pretty much what they're doing, for the upcoming "Enola Holmes" movie.

It's not really a Sherlock Holmes movie, it's some movie about his "sister"... a character created by an author called Nancy Springer for a book series (six books) that began publishing in 2006. And just uses the Sherlock universe probably because the story couldn't carry itself or draw any attention whatsoever.

This further strengthens my resolve to keep copyright in the hands of the inventor, or their chosen successors. Meaning, it prevents any hack from making a Sherlock Holmes story and make him do whatever they want - like adding a non-existent trans filipino midget sister.
Now I understand why The Mouse is so protective of their IPs, it's to prevent shit like this. But in their case, they circumvent rules to keep their works -and keep their fortune built on the backs of public domain characters themselves, ironically- out of the public domain forever.
