I don't know if someone has already mentioned them but the bullet journal and adjacent girls are also amazing consoomers. ¿Feeling guilty for procrastinating? Just fill your room with hundreds of pens/tape/whatever other stationery that you will never actually use, and make a video!
Just do what ever well adjusted office worker does and steal your stationary from the supply closet.
The supply closet stationary isn't pretty!
Stationary is a brilliant little consumer niche. (Hi Amberlynn Reid thread!) They're aesthetically pleasing, but you can also talk yourself into buying more than you need because it's "practical" quite easily. From there it's a straight-shot to hoarding.
One of the related videos pointed out that washi tape can be used as masking tape in journals and that is actual something I know I'm going to use in the future. Thank you for the indirect tip!
That just makes me feel ill. I'm not being funny when I say that thinking about eating that makes me feel sick.

Have you ever heard of Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6stTMNfjkQ&ab_channel=BernadetteTeachesMusic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfXc_Pzj7qE&t=17s&ab_channel=BernadetteTeachesMusic

Ukulele collections can grow unchecked for a couple of reasons

  1. They're cheap. Someone who plays guitar, piano, or violin can easily spend thousands to tens of thousands on the pinnacle of their instrument, but it's very rare for ukes to break out of the hundreds. Most of the ukuleles collected by acquisitionists fall in the range of $100-$200 and a lot of them are great instruments for people who appreciate ukulele music.
  2. They're small. Slap up some wall mounted stands and you can display dozens of instruments in a single room like you're living in a music shop.
  3. There's a lot of different kinds of ukuleles. So someone might pick up a cheap soprano (smallest size) ukulele starting off but move up to a concert (next step up in size) for a longer fretboard and after that, a tenor for deeper sound quality, then a baritone just to try it out, then there's electrics, 'outdoor' ukuleles that you can take camping or traveling, six strings that play like a guitar with a capo on the 5th fret, vintage ukes (though there's only really a small market and just for pre-war Martins), and suddenly you have 10 ukuleles and can justify owning all of them because they're all a little different.
  4. They're cute. Handpainting and laser etching make them highly customizable and there's a huge market for them because of point 1 - someone might only buy so many $500, $3,000, or $25,000+ instruments, but it's not that hard to impulse buy one that's $90 and has the islands of Hawaii engraved on the front or is painted like the Starry Night, especially if you've made a bunch of similar purchases because now you're collecting.
It comes off as consumerist to me because of the kinds of instruments people tend to buy when suffering from Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome. There's nothing wrong with the mid-market ukes, they're fun and accessible and sound pretty good. But if you're at the point where you're serious enough about an instrument to start spending significantly, it doesn't make sense to me to buy a ton of cheap ones that are practically the same when you could have bought one or two of performance quality instead and left it at that. There is a definite preference for 'more ukulele' over 'quality ukulele'.

But ultimately the ukulele community is absurdly wholesome and reminds me a lot of the flashlight guys so who here fucking hates Funko Pops?

The Funko kid's auction video is super revealing.

An item goes up for auction and he decides what the absolute most he's willing to pay is before he starts bidding and invariably goes over it because "it's just a few more dollars, but I'm not going any higher than this!"

And then he bids again swearing that this time is the last time for real!

.... But then he keeps bidding after that anyway until he wins, alternating between placing bids and swearing he isn't going to place any more bids. In the end, he spends $1000 on 3 figures for cereal mascots and this isn't even the only time he does that shit.

Oh boy Fumos. Did you know there original price is around 40$ but since they have risen in popularity because of memes. And if you want to get your hands on a Fumo and you don't wait for the Gift sale. The second hand market for Fumos now costs round 100$-500$ depending on the rarity of the Touhou girl.
I really hate how Fumo became a meme.
When I first started noticing it's rise in popularity, it was being pushed by irony meme fags who have never played touhou before.
then suddenly I see Fumo shit everywhere being plastered by faggots and niggers who are scalping them and selling them secondhand for 400 dollars or deepfrying their overpriced dolls.

If anything, consuming ukuleles should be a fun thing to witness. At least we’re seeing more people play actual instruments. You never see people make fun of people consuming/hoarding instruments in their house. Unless it’s a collection of air guitars.

IIRC there's a post earlier of a guy with a wall of electric guitars.

As for music consoomers, if you're not a legit musician (like the sort who play dozens of gigs a year across their region) or otherwise involved in the industry, you possibly don't need a wall of guitars or whatever. Now sure, you can tastefully display that stuff since a lot of guitars (and instruments in general) are a work of art but I'm sure there are Reddit-tier losers with guitars scattered everywhere they know nothing about or some rich boomer who has dropped 6 figures consooming "signature models" of the guitars of their favorite dad rock/80s metal/whatever musicians.

I feel way more forgiving for writing/pen consoomerism, mostly because I know what it's like to have a really good pen/pencil that tickles your autism so you stock up a couple in case the manufacturer stops making them. Like there's definitely a difference between the cheap bic pens and a good-ass office pen that you hide in your desk from your coworkers. Note: pens at reasonable prices, mind you. Not some $2,000 pen because elon musk farted near it once.

But the Bullet Journal/Studyblr community consoomerism is beyond levels sometimes. It's not even that you have to get Midliners or Moleskine's (now CAMPUS or whatever other Japanese uwu brand), but how they are so autistically insane about their damn notes and AESTHETICS is mindblowing. Because there's productive, and then there's the illusion of being productive just to flex on all the other girls about how much *better* you are at not "procrastinating".

That camera? Up to $90. It takes tiny polaroids that aren't that great, but it's "vintage" and "quirky".

I don't think you're legally allowed within the community without a Mac. Also obligatory coffee & cafe shot.

Another that shows off perfect and aesthetically done notes with Midliners juuuust in the corner. Gotta make sure those other bitches know you're #STUDYGOALS.

Med students are notorious for always showing off their notes & pens, talking about how stressed they are, and then gushing about getting a $5 Starbucks coffee cured their bad day. Be sure to follow their Instagram to hear their whining every hour of the day!

I'd say that's a gift women have, sometimes. Buying a ton of shit just to compose a single picture for social media, taking 15 pictures of it from every angle, then humblebragging about how stressed your day was but Starbucks/Coffee/Tea (if you're quirky) will make it better. Then all that shit you bought for that one picture goes into a drawer never to be seen again.

You don't know the half of it. They constantly make jokes(?) about G.A.S. and hiding their gear purchases from their wives and shit.

I'm sure it exists to some degree in all instruments, but guitarists are easily the biggest consoomers among musicians I've encountered.

You never see people make fun of people consuming/hoarding instruments in their house.
I absolutely do. A sizable fraction of all guitarists spend their free time looking at new things to buy rather than improving their skills or creating music.

It's pathetic.

Those things are bad for kitties and small dogs, too. If you have an animal that likes licking things keep them far away from salt licks and lamps.
True, the first picture is obviously preferable but there would need to be a ton more plants to be equivalent to the second one. There's no issues with accesibility, the plants are armoniously placed rather than piled up, there's a diverse selection, have breathing room and there's really not that many.

When i think of how even plants can become clutter i think more of something like these. Probably still better than funkos but not exactly ideal. Also, succulents are kinda like the funkos of plants , lots of hoarders for those.

Would you say there's overlap with audiophiles in terms of audio woo like using gold cables or incredibly specific sorts of amps/pedals, the "listening to the speaker" rather than what comes out of it?

Have any examples of boomers filling rooms with guitars by any chance?

Yeah, what's the deal with succulents in particular? Is it because they're cheap?
Bonus:

I think so. They are very low maintenance as far as plants go so they can withstand the lazy fat people who impulse buy them then neglect them . I think Tumblr really popularized them too, almost every illustration of "aesthetic witchy bedrooms" you see has a few of them but I personally think they are kinda bland.

Wait, wait. This is why everyone is buying those stupid plastic fake ivies, isn't it?

Why does the tech twink look like people thought Dream looked? If he's too lazy to scroll he should be fat as fuck.
On that note:

I'm still not convinced this is quite the same thing as consoomerism like you see with funko-pops and plastic crap. That many plants has got to be some serious effort to take care of. If you treat it like a funko pop collection you just end up with a wall full of dead plants in a month.
Bonsai and bromeliads are cats for old Japanese men.
Bonsai especially, don't they have to trim them and shape them like tiny topiary? I feel like this is something that takes dedication.

I couldn't have that many plants in my apartment, I aint got time for all that. But there is just something qualitatively different for me when it comes to caring for living things, vs just impulse buying plastic. If the plant obsessed person is buying so many plants they can't take care of them all like a botanical equivalent of those abusive animal hoarders, then that's one thing, but I don't really think having lots of plants, even a silly amount of plants qualifies as consoomerism, it's more of an actual hobby.

Another thing with plants vs plastic merch. You can't grow new baby funko pops from your collection. They just sit there because theyr'e fucking platic. Your Warhammer army isn't going to start multiplying new mini figures. That multi-thousand dollar gaming PC with gaudy RGB doesn't produce new components when you take care of it. But if you have a shit load of plants and a green thumb on the other hand, you can grow more plants yourself with seeds or root cutting. You can give them away, or might even be able to make a little bit of money on the side selling the extras if you end up with too many.

Definitely. Bonsai takes a lot of dedication and is pretty expensive. You can nickel and dime it if you know what you're doing, but for the most part it's more expensive than the average plant to look after a bonsai. You need to know about the tree you have, repot it every couple years, trim it every season and let it grow out before doing it again. Sure, you can pay someone to do this for you, but I think the point of bonsai is to do it yourself.

Examples.

You can see bonsai as a hobby is usually a combination of things. Tree knowledge, design, and patience. It's not really a "buy and shove on a wall" type thing.

This guy restores clients bonsai but also has tips for your own. Even though his store is full of a lot of plants, it's not all his. Most people only own 1-2 bonsai and they're a "look after them for life" type of thing.

But I disagree slightly that having a lot of plants isn't consoomerism. Because tumblr has romanticized owning plants and a lot of girls now buy them simply because they want to feel "witchy" without knowing how to care for them. Succulents in particular because they're low maintenance and cheap, so it's easy to justify constantly buying them which can lead to neglect. There are some plants you only need to water, but others you need to keep up a schedule with them and maintain their nutrition, repot them, and constantly add in nutrients (and sometimes monitor that soil).

Most plants need light unless they're shade-tolerant, but only sunning one side of a plant leads to it bending to grow toward a light source. Unless you have a greenhouse (most of these girls don't), then you need to practice rotating your plants and keeping them from stressing out. It's easier with a few but over 100? I guess if you super love them, when you get home from work you can spend 3 hours caring for every plant. But I doubt most tumblr girls do that.

And, like all things consoomer, there's subscription boxes for plants.

Some of these plant sites are in the Philippines or SE Asia and they just dig them up from a ditch and ship them. And girls buy them because they have plants on their "wishlist". There is a definite consoomer vibe with a lot of these plant youtube channels because even though some are experts, it still has that mindset of "Buy Plant, Stick on Shelf, Buy More Plant, Stick on more Shelves". They dedicate videos to their "Plant Hauls" and their rooms are oh so carefully set up to be as aesthetic as possible. Wicker chairs, macrame wall hangings, hippie-esque furniture but also conveniently modern.

I definitely think it lures in a lot of girls who want to be quirky and witchy and shit, who then spend up to a thousand dollars buying plants they don't know how to care for, but they want for aesthetic reasons.
