That's not true. 2015 is well past half over, and so far as any reliable sources say, all they have done is the animatic for the pilot. So this is just a flat out lie.

So I've been lurking this thread since it was ten pages or so, and I remember someone saying if tumblr rejected Gen Zed, not realizing it was portraying them to the letter, it would be ridiculous/hilarious.

What do you mean by "they?" If you mean real studios producing real animation, yes. Of course.

But Gen Zed didn't. They did not finish the animatic, by their own (now-deleted) Facebook claims, until mid-August 2015, literally a couple weeks before convention appearances (and a year after the bogus Wikipedia article claims that Hayden Black "produced" this piece of vaporware).

I'd say it's the latter. The main reason Gen zed flopped on Tumblr IMO is the team's incompetence.
They used marketing tactics with the subtlety of the proverbial bull in a china store, and didn't even try to disguise the pandering. Most of all, they didn't bother reseraching their traget audience- they keep making jokes that not only won't appeal to the age demographic, but will often be considered offensive by most Tumblrines. The animation doesn't even look good.
They didn't put much effort into their labour thinking Tumblr would be an easy target, but the result is so shit even they won't swallow it.

tl;dr It's not Tumblr becoming smarter, it's that Gen Zed is so bad it can't even please the dumbest audience.

I got myself banned from their twitter for asking about this. I guess that's better PR than trying to respond to it. Does anyone have any idea whether anyone is actually buying their merch? I feel like the answer is no, but I don't know how to test that hypothesis.
