Actually it wasn’t gay marriage it was that whole cake shop ordeal.Re ground zero: i honestly think gay marriage becoming legal has something to do with the transtrender wave in particular, since now just being gay seems lame and mainstream compared to being trans. If it were 2005 the same types of people would be loud about how bi they are. Bruce Jenner might have opened the AGP floodgates. There's no one moment, but those two things stand out to me.
When gay marriage was passed the Gays were doing just fine because we won mainstream by changing hearts and minds and votes one person and one state a time. Our main focus was on younger gays letting them know it gets better.
the problem was with mainstream acceptance, no AIDS crisis nothing to really fight for, gay rights orgs like GLAAD had really nothing to do, which isn’t good especially if your org relies on donations and you are used decades of millions pouring in and suddenly money drops dramatically.
They started looking for drama and when the Masterpiece Cakeshop thing started picking up steam; bored activists and donation hungry orgs jumped on that and blew it up way more than it needed to be - with the rally cry of “It’s still not over”
But pushing a non event into a “crisis” and stretching the drama out started to annoy the public and being good at PR the gays saw this, then started backing down not wanting to look ridiculous and worst of all unstable.
Then a news story came out from North Carolina where a trans woman was videoed coming out of the bathroom at a diner.
Since it wasn’t a gold star tranny but a awkward looking, clearly male person, the video went viral with the Fox News contingent starting up with “trannies in the bathroom!”.
Now the bored activists and gay orgs found their new hill to die on (trans rights having better optics than gays complaining about cakes). So when pulling the trannies out the LGBT closet and asked they if they had grievances, the answer was yes. Suddenly trans injustice was everywhere. Activist activated and the donations poured in to “help these poor people”
Within a space of a year you couldn’t say known or popular wordings like “shemale”, “transsexual” “tranny”, “hot tranny mess” etc
Then you had the millennials starting college and were handed something new and shiny to fight for. They ran with it only stopping to learn about the various “injustices and wrongs” in other groups and soon they began turning from basic liberal kids into “woke”
Fox picking up on more tranny in the bathroom stories for shock value and a majority of Conservatives, who by then had wrapped their head around the gays and shrugged them off as “unfortunate genetics”, were unprepared and creeped out by this new kind of body horror
Feminists who were used to HSTS started becoming unsettled by this sudden NEED then DEMAND to use their bathrooms
Bored alternative kids who would have been goth or Jeffree Starr types now jumping on being trans to be different
Peak Tumblr (where many of these alternative kids could be found) by 2014 had mastered the art social contagions, angry pile ons and group banishment for wrong think all of which lead to conception of what is now cancel culture (which would be birthed and unleashed later on Twitter when the tumblr brigade left there and migrated to Twitter en masse after 2018 tumblr porn ban)
Then Trump entered the chat and part of the left and the wokes started becoming increasingly unhinged because of him.
You throw those 2 years (2013-2015) and pack this perfect storm into a snowball and throw it down a hill.
Year One snowball went down the hill. Year Two it grew bigger and started becoming unstable.
Now it’s out of control.
(Also keep in mind I super simplified a series of complex events)
