Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

ISIS-Khorasan is their Afghanistan franchise essentially. They mostly hide in the mountains east of Kabul but are capable of doing some serious damage when they want to.
 
This welding the gates shut thing highlights a big problem with the modern military.

The purpose of the military is not to avoid casualties. Its to accomplish goals and use force to achieve political objectives. Avoiding casualties is obviously a good idea but it seems to be run like the safety team at a construction site or power plant.

The goal supposedly in Afghanistan is to evacuate all American citizens. The only valid reason for closing the gates permanently is if there are no more available planes and letting them in would interfere with the operation. But it seems to just be an ass covering thing by the brass.

Anyway, the Guardian has a pretty good live update article on what's going on. McCarthy is calling for Congress to come back for an Afghanistan briefing. Allegedly Biden is receiving reports in the situation room, but for some reason I have doubts about his understanding what's going on right now.
